Character Name: Kentori
Age: 17 turns
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft/Rank: Ancientcrafter/Apprentice/Candidate
History: Kentori was born in Eura Hold to Journeymen Crafter parents – his father a stone smith and his mother a bread baker. Both were moderately successful, but to say the least, Kentori was never without nice clothes or new boots when he needed them. For gathers they were all always well-dressed in fabrics of moderate nicety – nothing meant for Holders and their families, but far better than the work clothes of drudges.
Kentori recognizes that his craft choice is strange – he could easily make more marks elsewhere, and could have become a weaver and provide himself with luxurious fabrics for the clothes he loves so much – but his fascination with the old, decrepit objects of the Ancients called his attention on his family’s visit to Fort Hold. His father had been called there about some specialty stone work, since he was often regarded as one of the best Journeymen Stone Smith of the various Western Island holds. (he studied the stone work of Malvren Weyr during a commissioned stay there over ten turns ago, and has worked to adapt that style in his own work, developing a style that is unique to him, and lends itself to expensive tastes of the right people) Kentori was 8 turns old at the time and the entire family had gone on a bartered vacation for the other two of them. During exploring some caverns and rooms that he probably was not allowed in, Kentori discovered many preserved artifacts from excavations. While poking around and picking up some of the artifacts to examine them he was caught by a Journeyman Tinkerer, and had to beg not to be turned in – it would do his family only harm if he were to get in trouble. The eccentric tinkerer agreed, and accompanied him from the caverns, delivering him to his mother with the explanation that the boy had gotten lost and asked for help getting back.
Kentori never really forgot the objects that he had touched, and could not help but wonder what the objects were meant to do when they were created. He was fascinated, and his fixation held long after they returned to Eura. When he reached 15 turns, he requested of his parents to move to the Ancientcraft Hall to take up the craft (he was afraid that any younger and his parents would not let him go). They had assumed he would be interested in the Weavercraft (his flamboyancy developed early in life), but did not question his choice of profession. They agreed, and he was transported there as soon as there was a ship in that direction.
On the rare turn of chance, Kentori managed to return to Eura for a bit, now over two turns past his leaving. He had heard nothing of a newly-laid clutch on the sands – he wasn’t interested in Weyrs or their goings-on, since they hardly affected him whatsoever – but there was some gossip about it among the drudges around Eura. Something about Search dragons being expected – though he didn’t know what that meant. It was a few days he was there, visiting his family and old friends, when the soaring shapes appeared from between high above them circling down, their whirling eyes already busy picking through the crowded island hold below.
Curious what exactly was coming – he’d never seen a dragon up close before – he stayed outside, careful not to be caught in the bustling path of drudges not in the direct view of and of the dragons. When the array of colored dragons landed – every color ranging from white and green to blue and even a crimson (not that he had any idea what that meant exactly) – he watched as the riders slid from their necks and entered the Hold, their dragons peering around them as if seeing through every passing body. Even though he thought he was pretty well hidden from the troupe, when he turned his head to his left he saw a rider approaching him, riding helmet held under his arm and a crooked smile on his face. Kentori immediately admitted he didn’t know how to greet a rider, because he had never met one before, but the man was friendly and explained to him about dragons, Searches, and what exactly it meant that his own dragon had spotted Kentori hiding over here and called for his rider to get him. It didn't take long for Kentori to be convinced - he had heard some rumors about Weyrs and weyrlife, and there were definitely points of it that he found appealing - and the rider who had searched him led him back to a blue dragon, helping him up to the neck ridge behind his own riding straps. He wasn’t sure what exactly he was getting himself in to by accepting the offer – the whole scenario had more or less stunned him to silence, leaving many questions unanswered - but figured that he would find out when they actually arrived at the Weyr
.
Description: Kentori isn’t necessarily tall, standing at 5’6”, but is all leg, which makes him appear a bit taller. He’s thin and lean, though not to the point where it looks like he doesn’t eat (in fact, he tends to eat quite a lot). His shoulders are broad – inherited from his father – but he doesn’t have the muscle mass to accompany them. They’d look sharp and out of place if the muscle he does have was not toned as it is from general Hold work. Enjoying spending time outside whenever he can steal it away, his skin is well-tanned, and has tanlines displaying minimal clothing – clearly he enjoys swimming or being lazy on the beach whenever possible, and if there’s no beach, lying in the grass is just as pleasant. His dark brown hair – presumably nearly black were it not sun-lightened - hair is not particularly long, though not cropped short either, hanging just below his ears at the sides of his head, just below the nape of his neck in the back, and long enough in the front that he has to continually move it away from his dark grey – nearly black – eyes. His features are rather feminine in general, with a narrow face and nose, well-lashed eyes and defined lips – though no one would say that he actually looks like a girl. (it can be argued that at times he acts like one, hah) Aside from the hair on his head, he has very little hair elsewhere, and couldn’t grow facial hair if he tried.
He enjoys wearing clothes that fit him well and make him look good. Tunics and loose-fitting pants, while practical, make him feel as though he’s wearing his bed dressings to work. He tends to cinch the waist of his work clothes with a random scrap of cloth, but he’d much prefer wearing something more fitted than that, and in extravagant colors. There’s no reason he shouldn’t look nice, even just walking around the hold or Weyr – but he doesn’t think it necessary to ruin his nice clothes while scrubbing floors or mucking out runnerbeast pens either.
Personality: To say the least, Kentori is very, very comfortable in his sexual identity. He came upon it early when an older boy …introduced the idea of intimacy to him. Prior to that he had never had any interest in any of the girls of the Hold, even though some had batted their eyelashes at him on more than one occasion. Sure, he’s young, but a question of it has never passed through his mind. Still, he feels a bit alienated from the rest of the hold, knowing how frowned upon such interactions were, and he cherishes his first kiss as his most important secret. However, he tends to stay away from others in the hopes that his secret won’t be found out – he has no desire to be shunned for something he can’t help.
When he’s in a comfortable situation – usually with his family, or with his handful of friends (some people he’s known his entire life), he’s very energetic and high-spirited. His hand motions are wild and his smile big, and he exudes energy – probably everything that he stores up while appearing brooding and disinterested among the general public. His gangly body makes this seem almost comic, and he’s ok with that. He likes hearing people laugh, as long as that laughter doesn’t touch a deeper part of him.
As far as talking to boys go, he’s comfortable with it as long as he isn’t attracted to them. In fact, he tends to be quite charming – to either gender. That is, as long as no one gets him riled up. With a moderate level of energy, he’s pleasant enough, if not a bit withdrawn from any real personal connections. With a lot of energy… he becomes difficult to deal with, a bit hyperactive, and simply giddy at times.
He’d rather be off doing something else other than work, if at all possible. It’s not that he’s lazy. He just prefers to spend his time doing things that he wants to do, as opposed to things that he’s expected to do or that need to get done.
Coming to the Weyr has made him nervous, though he has heard rumors that homosexuality isn’t a big deal with-in them. Where he heard it, or who from, he doesn’t quite remember. Not that he’d ever admit to it, but he’s had more than one secret meeting with-in the hold or Crafthall, so he assumes he heard it from another in his situation. Still, he’s wary of making it known and remains guarded… though figures that with a clutch warming on the sands – a concept he’s just beginning to understand – he’s got more important things to worry about.
