Keir had been used to hard work, growing up on a farm ensures that to some degree. But there was hard work...and then there was this. It wasn't that the work was harder, more back breaking or tiring...it as just...well...boring and that for some reason made the days seem longer and the work seem worse then it actually was. Keir actually found herself missing some of her old chores as she sat peeing vegetables or washing mountains of dishes. Indeed even cleaning out stables was a chore worth dreaming about when one was stuck in one room for too many hours on end.
But these thoughts went largely unvoiced - partly because Keir kept telling herself that the menial tasks she was assigned now would pay off in the future and partly because she had no one to share them with. Someday she would soar the skies on a dragon, have a soul mate with whom she could share everything. The prospect of never imprinting was one Keir refused to acknowledge, or at least one she wouldn't admit to herself.
Regardless, free time when it came was something to be cherished and she swore to make the best of it when it came, perhaps she would walk out to the lake, though she wasn't sure exactly how she planned on doing. She supposed she'd figure that out when she got there.

(Assuming this is in the kitchen, if not I'll change it.)
Outside the kitchens, a man holds a green firelizard close to his face as he whispers. "Now remember what I taught you, k?" He sends her off with a gentle flick and watches with fingers crossed.
The little flit takes off and heads towards the kitchen. She reaches the doorway and hovers high, glancing back over her shoulder with a cheep. After getting a reassuring wave, she darts in and looks a safe spot to land. She wanted to be fairly high up so she could see almost the whole area, but specifically the tables. She gives a hum and sends the images to Hers.
Julian's brown head pops into the doorway. Slowly he tries to slip unnoticed into the kitchen. Shashee had spotted the tray of sweets for him. Now he was making his way around the edge of the kitchen, creeping closer and closer to them. He really wanted one before dinner.

Keir had finished peeling what she thought was something close to a small mountain of tubers and was in the process of taking the tray back to the cooks, coming around a stack of supplies when a soft oh so quiet cheep caught her attention. Pausing in mid-step she glanced around - she nearly missed the green firelizard at first but a small motion by the creature drew her attention. "Now what are you doing in here hmm?" She asked the beast with a slight smile - some considered them pests but Keir had always rather liked them.
She assumed of course that the creature must belong to someone in the kitchens, they were hardly rare around here and were forever showing up when you least expected it so Keir wasn't all that surprised to see one. "You best move on now" She told the firelizard "Before someone fusses at you" And her if she didn't stop dallying about instead of getting her chores done.
Turning about Keir was set upon getting back to work and ignoring whatever the firelizard was doing when she spotted a figure skulking about along the kitchen walls. Skulking she noticed straight towards a tray of sweets recently from the ovens and ready for the dinner crowd that would come in in a few hours. "Those" She directed towards the skulking male with a slightly arched brow "Are for Dinner"

The green blinks at Keir as her eyes whirl orangish. This one dared to talk to her? Her eyes whirl faster as she's told to "move along." Only Her's could say such a thing and maybe be obeyed. Althought.... She eyes the plate of meats. Bribery doesn't hurt.
The guy blinks around confused for a second before realizing it is him being adressed. "But, um, the sweets will be cold by dinner. These have a special taste when their fresh from the ovens." He seems almost childish for his age, perhaps it was just uncertainty. "Please don't tell the cooks. They threatened me with horrible things if I came back." He glances over his shoulders worriedly, hoping no one had noticed them talking. "Can't I just have one? Please?"

Keir didn't seem to notice the firelizard's reaction to her words - mostly because she was now paying attention to the man, he struck her as a bit odd but that might just be nerves and she reminded herself that she shouldn't judge him so quickly when she hardly knew him - well didn't know him at all really.
Hazarding a glance behind her to make sure no one else was look she sighed slightly "Well I suppose one won't be missed" she finally told him - and I mean it' not like it was her job to guard the food right? Nope..she was just supposed to help prepare it "And I won't tell them if you don't" She stated with a faint smile "I don't think I'd want to be responsible for any horrible things befalling you"

A grin lights up the man's face when she says he could have one. Even though its just one, its still one and better than none. "You have my word lady. I wont tell anyone. Thanks and my name's Julian. And..." He holds up his arm a little making like a perch. "Psssst! Shashee come here and say 'hi'."
The little green shakes the dust off herself and glides down to the proffered arm. She had done her job and done it well. Her's was happy and she knew she'd get a treat. And it had better be a Good treat! She could have been laying in the sun this whole time instead of helping.
As directed she turns to face the girl, who still hadn't given her a treat either. Shashee makes a polite cheep with a quick head dip to complete her greeting to the lady.
While Shashee greets the lady, Julian slowly gets a sweet and tucks it safely into his pocket. Since he was only getting one this time it was best to make it last. On the up side the sweets would also be given out at dinner. Julian couldn't wait.

Keir shifted the tray she was carrying slightly in order to better balance it. "Well its good to meet you Julian...and Shashee" She continued as the little green beast cheeped and dipped her head in an entirely sweet looking manner. "I'm Keir, did you have to train her to do that?" She questioned after a few moments of silence -truthfully now wasn't really the optimum time to be carrying on a conversation and Keir wasn't normally so outgoing as to even try...but it had been a long time since she'd really held a conversation with anyone asides from discussing chores that needed to be done that she was willing to take the chance.

Julian grins sheepishly. "Yeah, took me forever." He laughs, "and a large amount of treats. But as you can see she does it real pretty. The hardest part was getting her to cheep first, dipping her head was easy. Hey thanks for the sweet and not telling. You look like you might be busy and I should go before the cook sees me." He glances over his shoulder again. "She threatened aweful things if she found me here. You should come find me sometime if you want."

Keir considered his words thoughtfully - she had helped train several animals on her family's farm, and the value of using food rewards to do so was not lost on her although most of the animals she had worked with were not nearly as smart as some of the fire lizards were supposed to be. "When aren't we busy around here?" She asked with a light smile but had to agree that if she kept lingering much longer someone was bound to notice and come looking for her - and then Julian would get in trouble too because according to him he wasn't very welcomed by the cooks.
Probably because he liked to sneak sweets she thought ruefully. "I'd like that, maybe you can teach me more about Firelizards - I'd like to find an egg someday" She admitted with a slight shrug.

Julian chuckles. "They do like to keep us busy. Seems to think it'll somehow keep us out of trouble. But there are restdays, even the Weyr has them." He pets Shashee who nudges his hand to a different spot. "Sure, I don't know much since I just got her, but I can tell you what I do know." He grins at her, "Well if Shashee ever finds a boy to her liking, I could always hide the eggs around the kitchen for you to find." She could probably tell he was joking. Eggs wouldn't survive just any old place. "You don't mind what color right?"

"True" Keir admitted "I suppose it just seems like the work never stops - not that I mind really, just wish the chores weren't always so terribly dull" She continued, not wishing to seem like she was complaining overly much. She smiled at his joke and might have laughed - had she not been worried about drawing attention from the cooks "Well beggers can't be choosers right? But I'd love to get together sometime" Flicking her gaze towards the firelizard she looked back to Julian "And since I'm sure she'll make you share..maybe you ought to sneak a treat for her too" She suggested with a wink "I'll pretend not to notice"

He tilts his head. "Well if you work in the kitchens I suppose they don't really. Everyone wants to be fed every day! Even multiple times a day." His cheeks turn a light pink. "So with so many people the work doesn't really end for you. And we're all grateful that you feed us so well." Nodding, "I doubt its terribly exciting scrubbing tubers all the time. Not much happens with them."
Julian grins, "sure, come find me at the candidate barracks whenever you get some free time." He starts to laugh then stops and looks around. Once he was sure no one had noticed, he gives Keir another wide grin. "She sure will. Thanks Keir. Good luck with those dull chores." Taking her advice to heart Julian scoops up another sweet and beats a hasty exit. If the cook caught him.....

"I'll be sure to keep an eye out or you there" She told him with a smile "Take care" She told him as he left in a manner that suggested he was still worried that the cooks might catch him. Part of her wondered just what exactly they had threatened him with to make him so worried - maybe she'd try and get that story out of him if they saw each other again sometime.
In the meantime it was back to work for her and shifting the tray once more she turned and headed towards the cooks.
