Ah ha! Finally, he had been assigned to do one think he liked and one thing he did very well. Pazzult was practically whistling as he made his way thru the tunnels down to the weavers' area. Today, he would be mending clothes for the older aunties and uncles. And also going through to see if any of the weyr clothing supply for the candidates needed mending or sprucing up.

His earliest memories were picking up a needle and thread then being made much of for sewing a straight line. Not everyone could do it. As family whose entire being was saturated with the whole idea of "If it goes on your body, we can make it" for a child not to be interested in any aspect of the business was almost sacrilege. Still, Pazzult was pleased when they didn't hold him back from being Searched.

He was pretty sure that they did not expect him to Impress. And honestly, he didn't think he would mind so much if he didn't because he had an established life. Briefly, he wondered about those who did not have a career or family to go back to when it was all said and done.

Bah!

Such mellow thoughts. Today, he would go find who was in charge and ask for work. And work is what he could do well, he grinned as he pushed in the door to the Mending area.

The Mending area wouldn't really be seen as a very busy place. So many hands about to do the work, there doesn't seem to be a rush to get things done. A little off to the side of the main Weaving and Mending shops, stations, and what not, the tailor shop is situated with the doorway wide open. Of course just beyond that doorway piles and stacks of cloth on workbenches is hard to miss. An organized mess, Kita liked to call it.

Now, the Weyrling master had mentioned that some Candidates had the skills of Weavercraft and would be good to work in this section of the Weyr for chores from time to time, and one was supposed to be getting there soon. Perhaps he should actually leave his current project and look outside the shop for a sign of any new face. The thought in mind he rather reluctantly sets down the cloth he was sketching a pattern onto.

Just two steps out of the shop entrance and he stops, not wanting to stray too far from his work now that he'd finally gotten a hint of an idea for something new. Surely he could spot anyone new walking around from here.

Pazzult walked in and was immediately enthralled by the rolls of fabric, the large working table for patterning and cutting, the rather large look towards the back of the work station. It was like being home again! Oh yes, it was very much like being home. The grin on his face spread even wider as he looked around and caught sight of the familiar person he had seen at the morning table some time ago.

Now he had spent three turns at the WeaverCraft Hall in Boll and earned his apprenticeship before returning to his family. Since Weaving and Tailoring was his life and passion, there was really no reason for rank since Pazzult had planned on working in his hold for the rest of his life. Maybe marry a nice hold girl or adopt some child and teach them all he knew. "Hello there! I am Pazzult, I was told to report here this morning. I am from Acron Hold, my entire family is Weavers and Tailors so I know I should fit right in. Where do I start?"

Kita's attention falls onto the teen quickly, and he takes a moment to place that face in his mind. The Dining Hall, possibly? He was vaguely familiar, but not enough that he'd recognize Pazzult as one of the Weavers of the Weyr, so then he must be the one. He finds himself rather pleased as he sees the expression on his current help's face at having his shop taken in. Well if he enjoyed the cloths as much as it looked like, they'd be getting along very well.

"Pazzult? Welcome then, I'm Kita. If what you're telling me is truth then I have a good task for you to help with while I'm busy with patterns." A Weaver family, well that earns some major points in his book. "Have you been to the Hall or did your family teach you everything instead?" Well he did want to know, it was always possible that some weavers couldn't get to the Craft hall to formally learn, but that didn't mean they were unfit for the task.

Turning on his heel, he heads for one of the cleaner workbenches and moves aside the bolt of red cloth that was lying on it. "You can have this bench, to start." Now where should he put this cloth. Ah, on top of the green from Southern.

"Greeting Kita! And patterns? I am up to whatever task you want to give me. For once I am happy not to be working outside. These past few days have had me mucking the stalls and trying to herd ovines. Not fun." Pazzult replied easily. He moved towards Kita and looked over the bolts of cloth. A bright red and a darker green. But that probably wasn't going to be his task.

Sitting down on the bench, his hands to grab at familiar tools and get to work. How much he had missed the simple art of sewing. Catching the second part of Kita's question, he looked back up. "Eh? My family has taught me pretty much everything. I went to the Hall in Boll when I was 12 and stayed there until last Turn just after I became 15. I am 16 now. Seventeen in a few moons. I got my apprenticeship but when your family and extended family have done nothing but weaving and tailoring since they could name ancestors... Well, it's in my blood. Oi, maybe that's why you look familiar. Were you at the Hall too?"

Kita was surely older than him and from a different place as well but his face was not one that would blend into a crowd and be forgotten.

"Yes patterns. I've been hit with a bit more inspiration lately and I really don't want it to escape me before I have them all sketched out to use them." He walks over to grab another bolt of cloth that has a pattern pinned to it already, this one in a warm gold color.

"I'll need you to cut this pattern out and get the vest started stitching if you would. The original was too damaged to be mended and has to be scraps. I hope they'll understand." He nods absently, mostly to himself. "They shouldn't mind though the threads were getting bare before they burned it." He still wasn't sure how it had been burned, but he wasn't going to ask.

His train of thought broken, he looks up and peers at Pazzult a moment. "I was. I left the Hall I suppose it's been two turns now? Before then I was born here, my mother's a Weaver herself so yes, it is natural to be with the cloths when you're raised under the looms. But we might have passed each other once or twice there, it is possible."

Pazzult looked at the pattern and nodded absentmindedly. He looked over the gold bolt and was pleased with its warmth. It was to be a man's vest, which was find with him, but somehow he saw a woman's vest making it. He did some quick mental measurements and realized there would be enough to do both. "I can cut the pattern but may I cut one for a woman's vest as well? Is this to be general use or is it commissioned?"

Grabbing a pair of shears, he handled the clothe like he would his own future, maybe someday, child. Laying it out and smoothing any wrinkles, he was happy just to be back in his element. "I am sure you were in classes higher than mine so maybe we did pass each other. Or sat near each other in at the Tables."

With an ease that many others would envy, he began to cut the cloth. He wondered if he was going to use brown thread or gold thread? It was not his design or pattern so he waited to be instructed.

"Did the cloth tell you that?" Kita takes a moment to pause in his search for a spool, and leans over to look at the template laid out on the fabric. "There looks to be enough, and that color hasn't been requested by anyone else, they think it to be too bold, so if the cloth wants to be a woman's vest and you think you can do it, why deny it that wish." He grins lightly. "I find it easier to work when I listen to what the cloth wants me to do, as well."

"Of course, that's when it cooperates and tells me what it wants instead of just staring at me like a blank template. There are far too many days of that." He almost heaves an over dramatic sigh at that point, before digging the spool out. "Aha! To match the original vest, use this thread. I'm calling it brown, but the Traders were very adamant on calling this color Rust, or something of the sort." he shrugs lightly. "The woman's vest you can use whatever color you like as long as you don't use up my spools."

He seemed to have not heard the original question at all in his rummaging and cloth-talk, but oh well.

Pazzult was already lost in folding the cloth and making very precise cuts. One wrong move, one wrong distraction could ruin yards of fabric. He vaguely registered what Kita said about listening to the cloth though it sounded very familiar to something his pa told him.

"If you are unsure of the cut, don't make it. It means that the fabric wants to be something else."

Coming back to what Kita was telling him about a blank template, Pazzult laughed at Kita's sigh. Catching the spool of rust...brown...the tailor boy merely held it up to the cloth. "I guess if I was an Artist I would worry about the difference between red and rust and brown. Right now, all I worry about it making sure what I put together, stays together. And looks good. There was a holder lady who came to my aunts one time wanting deep purple and some horrible shade of reddish orange."

Pazz shuddered. "We had to wonder if she even knew what colors she was picking."

Kita makes a rather comical face at the color palette he's told of. "One of the first rules they tell you in Apprenticeships, the customer is always right. Some days I do have to wonder if there isn't something amiss with their line of thinking though." He shrugs though and sets himself at the much more cluttered workbench.

"I'd call myself lucky then that most orders here are much milder in color selections. Nothing so clashing as that, but not many in the Weyr have come seeking the newer colors out there yet. But there's always a chance. We're getting more vivid colors in every turn it seems, so there's bound to be someone bold enough to select it." Just had to wait on the right people is all. New arrivals to the Weyr as well, if one excluded the customary Candidate robes of course. No changing those, and he wouldn't dare to question that tradition.

Speaking of. "You're a Candidate, how are the robes holding up this turn. Are any you know of in desperate need of repair or replacement?"

"Well... She was paying a fair mark for it so I wasn't going to tell her one thing or another. But my aunt, Margehtia has a way of speaking that can get some hard headed folks to see reason." The mental image was still there and he laughed it off.

Moving deftly with his needle, Pazzult began to work on the pattern for the male's vest and moved quickly. He work was deliberate and no stitch out of place. Had he had no talent at all for tailoring or weaving, he was sure his family would have loved him all the same but the teen couldn't imaging doing anything else. "I heard they have found a way to make new dyes that last longer. I didn't stay at the Hall long enough for that. Who needs all them titles when all I want to do is sew. And maybe Impress. But it's not the end of my world if I don't..."

What would it like to have a dragon. He shrugged. "Ah. I have only been here a month or so. I haven't had the time to search through everyone's wardrobe. They keep us very busy but I will pass the word along."
