Concerning Doctors 9, 10, and 11, the Doctor seems to have a liking of girls that are already in some sort of relationship, right?

-Rose Tyler was dating Mickey before she went on board.
-The Doctor kind-of crashed Donna Noble's wedding. (even though this partnership seemed pretty mild and stayed more like a brother/sister-thing)
-Amy Pond was going to get married the next day.

The only companion he didn't look with romantically was Martha Jones. My family's theory: because she was single.

Any oddness in that? x]

Also, you all saw how he said that he'd have Amy back home before the next day? ...it took him twelve years for five minutes; I don't think she'll land back at that date for her wedding any time soon... XDD
Though I have to feel sorry for her nurse-finace.

heh, odd that it works out that way..honestly it's like he gives them a taste of something better, then their lives are different...sounds like unhappy women to me lol

Marie - I'm of the mindset that Donna and Ten were more like close BFFs rather than brother/sister.. once they established that neither had an interest in the other, they were ridiculously close as friends.

Darth - I definitely agree, but that's what he's done for ALL his companions, not just the newer women.

And I think it was ThPriestess told me a while ago that she thinks (paraphrasing) the Doctor wants what he can't have.
It works for Rose, Mme de Pompadour, the nurse from Human Nature, probably others... but not for Donna or Amy. I'm thinking it's still too early to tell how this complex relationship thing works.

And as far as female companions, it serves dually to balance out the Doctor's personality as well as interest people in watching the show: guys who think the companion is attractive, and girls who like the idea of a girl being awesome in a genre that is dominated by male characters. smile

Yeah, that probably was me. The Doctor is a train wreck looking for a place to happen. The reason he didn't want Martha wasn't that she was single, it was that she came on to him too quickly--where's the challenge in that? It's the challenge that gets him.
He's an adrenalin junkie. He gets worse every regeneration. He doesn't do "normal". He will consistently sabotage every relationship he gets into, lest he actually have to put effort into having a relationship once the hormones of "first love" have worn off and you have to deal with headaches and bad breath and flatulence . . .

Saw about 10 min. of "School Reunion" yesterday, with Rose and Sarah fighting over the Doctor and the Doctor saying he dumped Sarah because he didn't want to see her get old. Bulls***! Trust me, if he'd wanted Sarah to live as long as he did, he could have done it. The sisterhood of Sarn, who guarded an immortality potion, owed him big-time, for starters. He dumped her because she'd almost dumped him for being a pompous, patronizing horses a**, and he wanted to be the dumper, not the dumpee.

He's kind of a jerk like that.
Sadly, #10 looked like he might have actually been willing to put some effort into Rose, after losing EVERYTHING in the war. Then she ends up in another universe. And then she's back, but she's hooked up with Hand-Clone boy.
I hope Rose and 10.2 can have a nice life together, even when he's wrinkled and bald and blind as a bat and she looks just like her mom. wink

Ummmm... she's hooked up with Hand-Clone boy? Am I the only one who thinks that sounds creepy/gross?

In my fan-fic-of the-damned I just call him "John Smith-Tyler". Much less confusing. Unless you confuse him with my husband, or any of his dozen friends named John, rofl

I really don't think 11 likes Amy romantically. He seems to be more in love with the TARDIS than her. It's like he understands that he needs to travel with another life form but his one true love is his ship. It's kinda cute in a weird way.

I don't see how Amy could be a challenge, since she threw herself all over him. Besides, with Rory gone, he's got no one to "compete" with.

Well, anyone who knows me knows I'm a hopeless River Song shipper. Wrote hundreds of pages of fan-fic with her & #10 . . . then the Christmas ep came out with the bit about him marrying Elizabeth I and I was like, "holy carp, that scuttles my stories!"
But it DOES make sense. I was writing fan fic from the perspective that the reasonable thing for the Doctor to do, once he'd lost Rose to Handy rofl and Donna had forgotten him, was for him to Time-Google "Professor River Song", find her, "accidentally" meet her, and woo her with his irresistible charm and crazy hair. Then he'd have someone to love him and pet him and call him George (or Drexil. Or Joe Lungbarrow. Or whatever).
BUT it wouldn't be in character for the Doctor to do something sensible like that, even though, yes, he wants someone to love and pet him. No way is he going to go for a "shotgun wedding by temporal paradox." It impinges on his free will to be utterly stupid in love. Shoulda seen that coming. *facepalm*
So, in the throes of a serious manic episode (end of Waters of Mars) he runns off and secretly marries a REAL challenge, Elizabeth Tudor, just so he can strut around time & space bragging about it. (And again, what was I thinking that the opposite of depressed Emo Doctor was a well-adjusted Doctor? The opposite of Emo Doctor is Manic Delusions-of-Godhood Doctor. I should know that. I watched every Colin Baker ep. ever made!)
Honestly, the Doctor really is like an old boyfriend who keeps breaking your heart every time you get near him. Every time I come up with romantic fan-fic, it derails. Moffatt alone knows what kind of disaster his non-relationship with River is heading for now.

To hell with the Doctor. I'll just have to write about Rose and Handy wink .

I always thought if they tried to do another romance thing with the Doctor and Amy it would be rather creepy. He has theoretically known her since she was a child.

Ditto. She was like seven, and all of a sudden she's a stripper? Too creepy!
