Character Name: Zeyleen
Age: 16
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft/Rank: Trader/Candidate

History: Zeyleen has spent her entire life with her father, partially because she has no idea who her mother is. Instead the entire caravan has served as her surrogate family, watching over her and teaching her how to become one of them. The first years of her life were filled with haggling and quality checks and numbers until she turned 15 and was allowed to run her own stalls. At this point her education turned more to inventory and pricing and less on how to buy things from others. The things Zeyleen specialized in was rather odd. When she laid out her inventory one would find bows next to books of fairytales next to light flowy clothes next to various bits and pieces she’d picked up off of Ancientcrafters.

When Zeyleen wasn’t making sales or adding to her collections there was one hobby she greatly enjoyed. Zeyleen loved to hunt, and whenever she could she would volunteer to pad the caravan’s foodstuffs by hunting and cooking various local wildlife. There was nothing better to her than running over the plains or through the underbrush in search of prey, with nothing but a skinning knife and a bow for protection. The one thing Zeyleen looked forward to most through all her life was when they pulled into the Holds to trade. The first thing Zeyleen would look for were the dragons. The deepest wish she held was to fly. Never once had she ever had the chance to fly until the Searchrider took her away from her caravan. From that moment on her deepest goal was to Impress to a dragon of her own.

Description: Zeyleen has never had a proper home so to speak, and so she’s never had a place to stay indoors in. As a result her skin is darkly tanned from the sun of traveling around the southern continent. Her dark black hair is plaited into two braids falling down her shoulders and tied at the bottom with thin leather strips decorated with tiny golden beads. Alternating bracelets decorate her arms in multiple colors when she can get away with wearing them. Her dark black eyes gaze out sweetly from her heart-shaped face. All about her Zeyleen resonate a ‘sweet young girl’ image, though she’s well beyond her childhood years, a simple glance could tell you that. Her father says she’s the spitting image of her mother, a gentle, womanly figure with smooth dark skin. Years of work and hauling heavy objects has developed a strong build though, and there is no lack of muscle in her moderate frame.

Personality: Zeyleen is friendly enough, though she has a habit of looking at the world with what the caravan calls ‘friendly indifference’. She has little interest in humans outside of her caravan, and has a particular interest in birds. To such an extent that she collects any feathers she can find and works it into her clothing. A feather hair clip is almost always in place, though she has a habit of letting them dangle from earrings, necklaces, belts, and any other bit of shiny jewelry. In fact much like a bird Zeyleen adores jewelry, and any other shiny attachment she can add to her clothing.

Zey’s interests are rather varied and never very deep. She adores books of fairytales but never has time to read them with all the moving about. She enjoys clothing and fashion design but never has the materials to make anything and the only one she ever has any opportunity to dress is herself. She adores the little Ancientcraft trinkets and those she rarely sells, stockpiling and collecting them, but she has no knowledge of the craft nor how any of it works. As such Zeyleen never really spends a whole lot of time on one thing, her attention is quickly drawn on to the next thing. The only time she’s ever capable of really focusing on one thing for any length of time is when she’s hunting. When the wind becomes her body and the leaves become her whispers. When she ceases to be Zeyleen and instead becomes the world around her.

Zeyleen thinks very little of future, though now that she has been searched she has a vague outline of things she might do with her life. Should she Impress, which is her ultimate goal now that such a goal has been made available, her primary dream is to fly. Though once this comes about she only has vague concepts after that. Rank means little to her, and she thinks that maybe someday she’d like to be a Searchrider, flying across the continent searching for caravans like hers. Of course she wouldn’t tell anyone else that’s what she was doing, but she felt that those who didn’t have any specific place to be Searched would get a chance. Who knew how many perfectly good, or even great, riders weren’t being Searched simply because they traveled a lot? It wasn’t their fault they were born into a Trader’s caravan.

History:
Point of interest: Pern is full of dangerous animals, especially now. And most especially in the Southern Continent, where Trine is. Southern has Felines, which are very, VERY large and evil-tempered cats. They're also pretty damn smart. They've been known to take down dragons.

There's very little chance that Zeyleen would be allowed to hunt on her own, considering that, especially so lightly armed.

Besides that, it sounds good to me.

Description: I think this is all clear, but I'm not certain... on Pern, metals tend to be very rare, so I'm not sure if she'd have access to metal for jewelry. But this shop might have a different canon for it, since it's so far in the future.

I'm not sure about the books either. For most of Pern's history, hide scrolls have been the main medium rather than paper (trees were rare). This might be changed in this canon, but... yeah. Not sure.

Personality: Another thing I'm unsure of: fairy tales. I've never come across fairy tales in Pern before. I'm sure they have some children's tales, though.

I'd like to hear more about her personality. You go into great detail about her interests and that sort of thing, but you don't really describe what Zeyleen is like. Who is she? How does she act around people? Is she a leader or a follower or something in between? If she takes such little interest in people outside of her caravan, how does she expect to adapt to a Weyr FULL of people?

She needs some personality traits. Flaws and strengths, something to make her really stand out as a person.

You've got a really good start overall here, so don't be discouraged.

She looks good! but I have a few questions, if that's okay?

-> I don't believe there are 'books' per say on Pern, rather they have scrolls made out of hide since paper is somewhat scarce. I am also inclined to believe that they don't have 'fairy tails' in the way that we think, though they may have stories of threadfall and their history. You will need to ask Skie for things more specific then that, I'm not staff so I don't know/can't say. ^^

-> I am having a little bit of a hard time understanding her personality in terms of strengths and flaws. The only thing I could see as a minor flaw would be her lack of thought towards others? This would work well, though perhaps you should elaborate a bit more? How much indifference does she have? Does she avoid their contact all together, or is she just more aloof than anything? Does she not socialize at all, or is her friendliness always forced/strained?

I don't see any defining strengths either, other than maybe liking to dress nicely - which isn't much of one. Is she a leader? Or a follower?

Metals: metals are relatively rare - though they aren't as valued as we value, say, gold. Gold's naturally soft and pliable so it's not very good for much of anything useful. There are Crafters who make jewelry, however, and they use the precious metals - mostly copper, silver, brass, bronze, and occasionally gold. Glass beads are controversial - they represent the Ancients' legacy and old ways, ways that are distrusted now. More common materials would be shells, wood (which is still rare in the Northern Continent), and the prettier minerals that are mined. If you want a list of those minerals, let me know and I'll figure some out. ^^

Books:
No books on Pern!~ The don't use paper as a substrate for writing but hides. =3 Scrolls are the most common method of record keeping and the occasional bound pile of hides is the closest they come to books.

Fairy Tales:
Fairy tales as we see them don't exist. There's no religion, no supernatural for the Pernese. Without these two sources, there's no reason for fairy tales. Children's Tales and Lesson Songs, however, are common. They mostly deal with things like errant children running into the wild only to be swallowed whole by vicious wild whers, firelizards that cloud around people and almost seem to bear them aloft, legends of figures from the recent past and myths of figures before. The largest, most well known legend is that of the start of the Atypical Dragons and the most widespread myth is that of the White Dragon and his comrades who brought this trouble down upon them. ^^ Their legends are rooted firmly in reality rather then approximating their lives to supernatural influences. =3

Does that help answer questions?
