User ImageThere had been a time in the days between parting with Vidar that the light colored petite, so used to him being there, would seek him out as she always had. By now that was no longer so. The only outward sign that she still thought of him at all was the swing her paw would take, pushing the charm around her neck whenever she was laying down. Once, twice, three times at least, she would complete this ritual.

However, she still thought of him often, perhaps more often than was comfortable. And in that time Chishiki had started to seek out things to occupy her ever active mind. She had learned more now than in her entire life, the expanse of her knowledge and her ability to comprehend the world was more obvious now. She couldn't wait until he came back, as he had promised he would, so she could tell him all about the things she had learned.

In fact, today at the water's edge she had learned something very interesting. If you dunk your head enough times, eventually it's like you've run a marathon.

A tiny paw came up and gave another gentle swat at the necklace before she stood and walked slowly over to the source of her lesson for the day. His fur was sopping and dark, even if she hadn't imagined it could get any darker. "Say, are you trying to catch a fish?" she asked casually, although she knew full well that couldn't be the case. He had chased all the fish off with his splashing long ago.

User ImageThe tips of both ears could be seen protruding above the rippling surface of the pond. Despite this, the owner of said ears made no movements to show he had heard the question at all. Whether or not he had, it was still an entire two minutes before he pulled back violently, sending droplets of liquid in many different directions. He coughed, his lungs desperately trying to suck in more air than normal breathing would allow. And when the spasms finally stopped, his breaths still came heavy.

Eventually eyes creaked open. They were rather bloodshot and weary looking, but it was hard to tell if this was due to his personal torture or some other reason. A small pink tongue shot from his mouth and lapped at his chops for a moment.

"You... want something?" he finally asked without turning his gaze to Chishiki at all. "I don't really... have time... to talk. I'm busy." Before she could respond, he dunked his head below the surface again, but she tapped him on the back with a paw shortly after, causing him to lose whatever concentration it took to stay under. He came back up and looked at her, some attempt at sharpness behind his eyes, but the obvious exhaustion he felt made that difficult. He could tell she wasn't fazed at all.

"What?!"

There was a moment of silence between them, but eventually the female found her voice again. Whether or not he wanted her around, she didn't much care. She wanted her questions answered at this point. That, and the gentle side of her could not deny that it felt something. This seemed to be painful. She wanted to know why someone would want to do something like this to their own body.

"Why are you doing that?" she asked this time, disregarding her early fish catching comment for something a little bit different. "Are you trying to become a fish?" She had no idea if that was possible. Something told her no, but then again there were such things as Kuniku with fins. Perhaps that really was how they were made, since Nizuse had never went into that kind of detail when they talked.

"It doesn't look like it's working."

"Trying to become a- No!" Oshimai shouted, as if that were the most ridiculous notion in the world. "There's nothing good about being a fish. Not at all." He turned his eyes from her again and looked down at the slightly murky water as if debating another dip. Slowly, almost in a daze, his head dipped closer and closer to the surface. Eyes were now narrowed and unblinking. However, as soon as the tip of his nose touched the water, he felt the female's paw against him again.

Snapping, he rounded on her, even jumping to a stand. It seemed his lack of oxygen was still in effect, though. He swooned a bit, plopping immediately down onto his bum to avoid toppling over like an idiot.

"Would you just go away?" he asked her, almost sounding sincere. "I really am busy."

Nothing good about being a fish? Nizuse would have begged to differ were she here, the petite femme was sure about that. Her large blue friend seemed rather keen on swimming the oceans all the time. That is why it never surprised Chishiki when their meetings were short-lived and far between. The finned Kuniku was always the one to travel inland to visit, but someday she would go to the shore to return the favor. Only after Vidar came back so she could tell him where she was going. It wouldn't do for him to come back to an empty nest and she had no inkling as to the time of his return.

Regardless of all that, she let her attention zone back in on the present and the male before her. "I don't see why you are so busy," she told him honestly, her ears sliding back. "It looks like you are only hurting yourself by doing that. Are you trying to hurt yourself?" Now was the time for questions. Now, before he tried to leave. She had observed plenty long enough.

In the time that they had been together, with his bottom resting now rather comfortably on the ground, Oshimai's eyes had become considerably droopy. It was actually an entire minute before he snapped back to attention. The look on his face was strangely surprised, as if he hadn't expected the break on conversation himself. Blinking, his body became tense and his gaze darted around, looking for something nonexistent.

"What happened?" he asked quickly, as if she hadn't asked a question in the first place. For some reason he felt confused. Suddenly he couldn't remember what had just transpired between teh two of them.

All he could recall was this female patting him on the back and now this, now he was sitting and she was staring at him expectantly. What in the world? Could he have...? No. This was why he told her to leave him alone! Immediately, he turned back to the pond, dunking his head before she could make a sound of protest.

"What? Before she could react further, he had nearly slammed his face back into the water. The force was so great that she could even feel some of the liquid splashing back and dotting her paws. This time, however, instead of tapping him to make him come back up, she stayed still. Rather than the calm, almost motionless male from before, this time he seemed to be swaying his head back and forth through the water.

Despite her observation, she wasn't completely sure why.

Canting her head, she took a few steps away from the frantic self-drowner, her paws tapping against the ground throughtfully as she moved. He had been confused, she definitely knew that. It was as if he had expected her to tell him what had happened between them. Could it be that he had already forgotten? In such a short period?

She had noticed, if nothing else, that his face seemed inexplicably tired. Having not known him before now, it was difficult to tell if he always looked like that or if he was truly exhausted. The heaviness of his eyes leaned her decision towards the latter. But why? Could it be that he had zoned out enough that he had missed everything they spoke about? Or was he so tired that he had fallen asleep on his paws? Her brows furrowed and she turned back in time to see his head lifting back above the surface.

As he came back up, he was a bit calmer, besides the fact that his slowed breathing had picked back up to another raspy pace. Eyes were squeezed shut as water ran over them relentlessly, but he made no move to remedy it. Only when the dripping had stopped did his slowly open them back up. His vision was bleary. It was getting worse. And now that he had time to realize and think on this, he was getting nervous again.

Turning to Chishiki, he blinked and blinked until her form came into some semblance of focus. "It's not working this time..." he muttered, panting so hard that he couldn't even say it under his breath. He forced himself to his paws, wobbling a little bit as he walked over to her.

"It's not working, is it? You saw. Tell me what happened." It was as if he was trying to sound demanding, but it certainly didn't come out that way.
