I've always thought gender switching animal were interesting.
Here's a link to a National Geographic article on heat changing lizard genders: Sex Change

Until now animals were assumed to use one mechanism or the other, with reptiles such as crocodiles, turtles, and tortoises relying on temperature, and mammals, birds, and most amphibians depending on genes.

A dual system for determining sex has also been suggested for another Australian lizard, the three-lined skink, by a team led by Rick Shine, professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Sydney.

Shine said that the new findings "verify a remarkable phenomenon."

"The evidence that nest temperatures can override sex chromosomes is absolutely clear-cut," he commented.

"The work is exciting because it suggests that a long-held dogma in this research field—that in any given population, sex is determined by a single process—is now in tatters.

"The factors that determine an animal's sex are truly basic to its biology, and it's becoming increasingly clear that we don't really understand what those factors are, at least in some major groups of animals.

"I suspect that future studies will show that many kinds of animals have far more complex sex-determining systems than we currently imagine," he added.

I wonder how this would effect those people that think being transgender goes against their creator god.
How does this effect your view of genders?
and why does hot=female?

No posts? I thought it was really interesting. Think of how global warming and will be effecting the reproduction of countless species.

Wow Kitty, this is amazing. Michael Chrichton's Jurasic Park touched on this concept very briefly, but it's amazing to know how widespead through the reptillian and amphibian animalia. I think that most people know that one theory as to why the dinosaurs died out where a huge meteor crashed. Of course one metor didn't hit every dinosaur on the planet; the atmostspheric dust changed the planet's temperature thus changing the gender ratios in reproduction caused a steady decline and eventual extinction.

Now consider the human population changes over the centuries. Proportionately, female offspring are rising in number while the number of males are declining. While mammalia are considerably diverged from herpetalia, we still share much in common.
Although, of course, heat is not the only factor in human or any other reproduction and there are chemical mutagens to consider as environmental factors as well. The effects of chlorine (in most 2nd and 1st world country water supplies) bringing girls to puberty at an earlier age can hardly be insignificant.

I would love to be able to switch my gender at will. Some people believe that at one point all humans were hermaphrodites then as the population grew, we evolved to single sex beings, so we wouldn't become over populated. It didn't work. The native americans use to call these people two spirit, and they were highly respected. Then when the settlers got here they killed all of them mad

If cold = male then the dinosaurs were killed via sausage party. Odd to think that.

I can't think of why cold would make for one gender over the other. Perhaps the areas where more sexualy morphoric animals live determins how much life, and thus how many egg layers could find a comfortable habitat.

I supose that male is a thow away gender.
