Winter was slowly melting away and the wildflowers and grasses were sprouting from the earth. Agony had never felt so rambunctious before and found herself escaping from the safety of the herd to set out on her own adventures. However it was getting more difficult sneaking past both her parents and Rowan. She wasn’t as small as she used to be and Rowan was keeping a careful watch as ever nowadays. But she always managed to get away unseen. Taking in a deep breath of the morning air she pulled her head back and nickered at the warming sunlight that beamed onto her body. She stepped out from underneath the old oak’s shade and greeted the sun with a friendly neigh. She bobbed her head up and down with her tail swaying excitedly. She couldn’t wait to do some exploring and had decided to check out the eastern part of the woodlands.

She stretched out her limbs before trotting towards her mother—Regret, to get a morning drink. The warmth of the milk felt good against stomach and made the smile on her lips blossom even more. She continued to drink until her thirst was satisfied and licked her lips to savor the taste of the rich milk.
Agony greeted her siblings and thought about bringing Nameless with her. She enjoyed spending time with her brother because he was neglected and most hated by their Father. She could never really understand why but had figured it had something to do with his normality. The smile had faded from her lips and turned into a jealous grin. She lowered her had and looked down at the exposed ribs and ripped flesh on her side. She hated how her flesh was peeled back and her bones shown. Agony knew that she should be proud of her birthmarks, but she wasn’t and wanted so much to be like her brother. Her eyes looked back to Nameless. She knew that he was strong and knew that one day his strength would be shown to everyone in the herd. A faint giggle escaped from her vocals.
You’ll show Rowan a thing or two, she thought to herself with a smirk. Agony nickered in laughter as she glanced quickly to Rowan and remembered the time when she stood up against it.
Good times. Good times, she smirked widely.

Agony waited a brief moment before making sure her parents weren’t watching her. And it was a rare chance to see them staring at her, especially her Father. She didn’t know why but she felt so distant from Thanos. Her eyes looked to Regret and the two only shared one similarity and that was their coating. Agony had inherited her mother’s dappled brown coat. She was glad that she looked a bit like her Mother because she felt closer to Regret. But other than that the two were perhaps more opposite. Agony turned to Rowan and his head was turned away.
Good. Here’s my chance, she thought to herself. Agony lowered her head towards the earth a bit before stepping away from the herd with a quiet but quick gait. She stepped lightly on the earth and kept glancing over her shoulders to see if no one was watching. So far so good. But all that changed when she felt her body lunge forwards…

Agony wasn’t the brightest filly and was quite clumsy at times. So it wasn’t odd to see her tripping over her long legs. She wobbled side to side and almost lost her balance for split moment but had caught herself. She felt the hair of her mane stand on end as she quickly eyed the herd before moving on.
Phew. They didn’t notice, she thought to herself before pressing onwards. She gulped quietly before stepping into the dense forest. The woodlands were colder and damp because the sunlight couldn’t pierce through the branches except in a few areas. And though the woods looked eerie they were full of life and adventure. The smile returned to her lips as she picked her gait up to a trot. Adrenalin pulsed through her veins and drove her further away from her herd.

The forest had been a home for many of Agony’s adventures and an escape route from the herd. She felt as though she could be herself with none of her family watching. She would hide away at the babbling brook to play in the cool water on warm days. Or she would listen to the songbirds in the early morning when no one was awake but they had long since left now. Agony blamed her sister—Ruin for making them leave. But what Agony liked to do the most was spy on other herds and dream like it would be like to be them or apart of their herd. The foals in the other herds looked so carefree and could be just as playful as Agony would be when left alone. Their parents watched over their young ones carefully to make sure they didn’t stray too far. Agony wished that her parents would worry about her running off but would enjoy it most if one of them came along from time to time.
She remembered a time when she came across a beautiful meadow in the winter. There was a fresh blanket of snow that sparkled underneath the sunlight. The snow had been untouched and therefore was perfectly clean. Agony wanted to bring her Mother to the site but was afraid of the response she might have gotten. So she didn’t ask and played throughout the meadow by herself.
Agony sighed deeply as it was frustrating at times to speak with both parents. She was to spill out her heart and thoughts to them but was intimidated [mostly by Thanos]. So she kept quiet for the most part with an expectation with that one time of speaking out to Rowan.
“One day,” she said quietly. Agony had vowed that one day she would confront both her parents and tell them both her true feelings.

Agony kept walking throughout the forest enjoying the peaceful feeling of being away from the herd. The farther she walked the more beautiful the forest was to her. The snow had melted away in certain spots and the grass and wildflowers were beginning to grow up from the earth. Agony had even spotted a couple butterflies fluttering here and there. She wondered what it would’ve been like to have wings. Laughter filled her vocals as she trotted forwards and leaped into the air a couple times. Agony wished that she could fly and see the world’s beauty. She would travel to the crashing waves of the ocean and to the windswept plains and valleys.
“What a silly idea,” she spoke. “Silly but grand,” she neighed out in delight. “Maybe Brother would like it too,” she smiled brightly at the idea of the two just traveling the world together. It would be a great idea because they would be escaping the cruel world that they were born into. The Hell herd wasn’t a group of horses to mess with and Thanos could intimidate the strongest stallions that crossed their territory, which made finding friends hard on the young filly. Then again there weren’t many herds that traveled to the darker parts of the woods and they did so with reason.

Agony hadn’t realized how far she had traveled and had decided that it would be best not to go any further because her Father or Mother probably finally noticed that their daughter was missing and sent Rowan out to retrieve her. With a heavy sigh her eyes glanced over her shoulder towards the little path that she had created. She glanced down at the ground to see her hoof prints in the damp earth. Agony didn’t want to return just yet. She wanted to play and frolic until her heart was content and right now Agony was on the borderline of being bored. She had only walked a couple hours, but hadn’t trailed off to find anyone to play with. A spark of interest came from laughter and giggles coming from the distance. Her ears sprung forwards and her tail swayed excitedly behind her.
She cocked her head to the side and stretched out her neck. Her nostrils flared, as she smelled the scent of lilacs coming form an opposing herd. She smiled and closed her eyes as she breathed in the scent. The particular odor was delectable and Agony took a fond over it because it was much better than her scent of death and decay. Intrigued to know who was making such a loud raucous she decided to do some investigation in the matter. Agony stepped off her trail and into the woodlands. The trees were beginning to get sparser and the sunlight began to warm her body again. The sun felt good against her cold coat and she yearned to feel more of it. Her ears and attention focused on the laughing that seemed to get louder as she inched closer…

“I bet you can’t jump higher!” a little black colt boasted as he trotted towards the little group of foals. He threw his head back proudly before leaping upwards and landing with a fairly loud ‘thud’ noise. The other foals neighed in delight and tried as well to master the jump he had preformed and soon the game changed from competition to chasing. They galloped after each other in hopes of catching up to the one in front of them. Agony could feel the muscles of her legs twitching as she wanted to join in on the fun but was reduced to watch from the sidelines behind a couple bushes and trees. Her ears parted as she listened to the small band of foals play while their elders watched in the near distance.
Agony pondered on what it would feel like to feel that freedom. In her own herd she had to hide her true personality. It wasn’t much fun when you had to pretend to be someone you weren’t. But seeing the foals made her want to live their life if only for just a day.

Agony quickly snorted and shook her head. She had to get such thoughts out of her mind. Her ears pulled back as she puffed out her chest, still watching the little ones play in the distance. She puffed out her cheeks as she exhaled deeply and stepped back. “Humph!” she flicked her tail and stuck her snout upwards as she walked away from the sight. She had seen enough. She had thought enough. Agony needed to find a way to stray her mind away from such nonsense. Suddenly her ears lowered. Such things weren’t nonsense to her…

Agony figured that she needed to stay her mind away from the possibilities of ‘what if’, even though she knew that her dreams would never come true. She sighed deeply as she glanced over her shoulder and took one final glimpse of the foals playing and dreamt that she was out there. She glanced down at the exposed ribs and neck, knowing very well that she could never be accepted into another herd because of these marks. The Hell Herd was her home even though she didn’t like it very much. She would have to get used to it sooner or later. She breathed deeply again, dipping her head down as she trailed throughout the woodlands with a gloomy gait.

“Maybe all I need is a friend,” she thought to herself out loud. Agony raised her head for a brief moment and looked around. Her ears swiveled as she tried to listen to anyone who might be around her, but she couldn’t pick up any movement. There were on occasion a couple birds that flew above the canopy, but they moved too quickly for her start any real conversation. Not to mention birds were quite loud and chattered a lot. She made a face, laughing softly as a bird might wake her up quite early in the morning when she liked to sleep in. Suddenly a gray, plump critter moved back the corner of her eye. She stopped and noticed a gray bunny hopping through a patch of clovers. She pondered if the hare would be the best friend for her? Probably not. They too moved quickly and someone in the herd might make her new friend into a snack. She made a face and continued on her short little quest to find a friend.

Agony had noticed the further she walked the more sparse vegetation was becoming. The trees didn’t grow close to one another, even bushes freshen with berries were rare. But she didn’t turn around. She had never traveled this far from the herd before. It was quite exciting, but she was also very nervous! Agony was alone and there were many larger creatures that would easily make a meal out of her. She kept her senses on full alert as she moved more and more out of the woodlands that had been her protection. The sunlight poured down from the havens and onto her small, petite body. She smiled brightly from the warmth as she stepped out of the forest and stood in front of an ongoing field. Her nostrils flared, as she could taste the sweet grass at the roof of her mouth. She licked her lips and smacked them together. Her eyes squinted for a brief moment and wondered what lay across the field. She wanted to see more of these lands, but knew that it would be better to keep in the forest for now.
