"Sparring?" Now there was an idea. He latched onto it and pretty much ignored the rest of what was said though he did return the nuzzle. Affection was one thing that had been easy to get used to. "You mean fighting right? I don't know how to do that and Shi always wants to run and play chase so we rarely do anything else. Could you kinda teach us Scar? I know you can't move well sometimes but if you explained I'd get it at least." He pranced at the idea of knowing how to defend himself...at least in theory. He turned to Shiloh next. "What cha think huh? Sound active enough for you?"

Is that so? The inkling of a devious idea had started to form in the colt's mind but before it could come into realization Fliance surprised him. Really surprised him. "Definitely sounds active enough for me," he replied, certainly interested in the idea. He hadn't exactly gotten to do any rough housing with Scar, and with Fliance all he had wanted to do was play games. It hadn't exactly occurred to him that they could spar! "That's an awesome idea!" he blurt out once more now that it had finally sunk in. Shiloh certainly wanted to know what this game was, as he couldn't possibly think of it as anything else but play. To say the least... he wasn't exactly intuitive and hadn't figured out sparring was meant for training.

"Yup, fighting. Learning to handle your hooves correctly in battle and maneuvering to out-step your opponent", she clarified, taking note of Fliance's keen interest in the idea. She wasn't certain what sort of student's they would be, as Scar wasn't going to be able to get around and show them what she meant, but she had the faintest idea that Shiloh might be a bit of an annoyance. The boy had energy, she'd give him that, but it's that nonstop 'go go go' that seemed to make her think he wasn't ready for this sort of thing. Still, it was Fliance's request, and she had said it was his turn to pick. "Alright then, I'll teach you how to spar", she decided, slowly moving to the circle around the two boys, training her inside ear on their positions.

As she moved slowly around them, taking deliberate steps so as not to injure herself further, the mare explained. "Sparring is a simple way to train for real fighting, without getting too hurt in the process. The very first thing you need to know, is that you are not allowed to severely injure each other, and if someone says 'stop', that's it. You've won, congratulations." She'd concluded her circle and stopped once more in front of them, casting a critical eye on the both of them and studying their physique. It was hard to tell as yearlings what they would be like, but a good spar would at least help to teach them some basic rules for living on the plains.

"Sparring is normal for colts of your age, and is used to teach you the necessary basics of fighting; a tool you'll undoubtedly use at some point in your life. First things first, a spar usually starts by trying to intimidate your opponent. Make yourselves look big and mean!" She snorted for emphasis, arching her thin neck and carefully pawing at the ground in front of her. She would do what she could to instruct these boys, but her movements were limited and slow.

His ears were trained on Scar as she talked so he could take in everything she said. In truth he was rather surprised she'd acquiesced. And he was happy that Shi liked the idea too. While Fli was faster, Shi often had more endurance. In a long run Shi almost always won so I would be nice to be better than Shi at something. Fli's ears followed scar around as she circled them. "Don't hurt eachother. Got it." He wiggled his eyebrows at Shi and continued to listen. When she suggested being intimidating he buffed out his chest and pawed like she did, trying to make his pale blue eyed self fierce. "Okay. Now what?"

So much explanation for what simply he had deemed a game. The fact she mentioned he'd be using this for the rest of his life seemed to be a bit wasted on the buckskin colt, as all he cared about right now was playing and having something to do. Yeah, yeah, get to the good part! he thought impatiently, swishing his tail from side to side as he watched the rickety mare circle them. For some reason he got the urge to watch her, something about her being behind him was almost... scary. Just like Scar herself, there were times that he thought she was scariest thing around, particularly when she was chasing off the strangers he had gotten into trouble with on more than several occasions.

"Big and tough, huh? Okay!" Attempting to come up with anything remotely 'intimidating' the goofy colt flared his nostrils and raised his upper lip, trying to show off what big teeth he had. Of course, this was accompanied by jutting out his bottom jaw and huffing. No doubt, if he were a bear or some other large creature with massive jaws it would have looked scary, but on Shiloh it merely served as comedic. "How's this?" he mumbled between his teeth, still trying to look scary.

She watched the two carefully, wondering just exactly what they would come up with. Fliance seemed to have the right idea, though it lacked force, but Shiloh just didn't seem to get it at all. His face was, well for lack of a better word, humiliating when it came to intimidation tactics. "Well, its something you'll both learn in time. All of this takes experience, and it doesn't hurt to have a little drive when it comes to sparring. You want to scare you opponent, either into running away or being uncertain of themself", she told them, knowing full well the rules of battle. Scar herself had fought many opponents, but none of which had ever been as destructive as those wolves. Her hide would forever bare the marks of the their teeth and claws, a reminder of the betrayal she had suffered. But these boys didn't need to know that, so Scar simply went on instructing them.

"Its important for you to face each other, size each other up, look for weaknesses you can exploit or strengths you should stay away from. After that? If both of you still wish to continue, that's when you make your move. Undoubtedly someone will take the first go, make sure you're expecting it. In a spar, though you're using your teeth and hooves to 'attack' one another, its important to remember not to go full force." Scar then backed up a few yards to allow the boys their room, both ears pricked as she watched to see what they would do. Who would make the first move?

She continued to circle and his ear followed her. Shi seemed bored...which irritated him. This was important! He bared his teeth and huffed at his companion making his nostrils flare. "I suppose it's me that will make the first move then." He mumbled under his breath. Using his superior take off speeds to his advantage he gathered and then sprung...what would appear to be right past Shi but was really right past him so he could n** hard at his flank. He'd taken Scar's warning about serious injury to heart and didn't really wound. "Take this seriously. Or I'll just beat you." He circled to face Shi and turned to look at his friend with a smile on his face.

Before he even knew what was going on Fliance sprang forward out of the corner of his eye, and nipped at his flank; and not a friendly one at that! Shiloh backpeddled as a result, eyes wide as he stared at his friend. That had litterally come out of nowhere for the buckskin, who was still working on looking tough. "I am taking it seriously!" he shot back, flicking his ears uncertainly. Well then, he definately didn't like to get beaten, so Shiloh squared off against Fliance and lunged forward, not really sure of what he was going to be doing but wound up rearing right in front of the perlino colt.

There really wasn't much reason to coach them further, as Scar had always thought it best to learn by doing, and right now thy really needed to figure it out for themselves. That's what sparring was for after all, to learn the basics to fighting, which just couldn't be taught effectively through any other method. Of course, this was their first time, so the mare wasn't expecting anything spectacular. In honesty, she was really just making sure neither of them took it too far or hurt one another too badly.
