Why does Japanese have to hurt so much? Talk about a confusing language. I wish there was a better way than just taking intense classes. Oh well, I guess we just got to keep our chins up and keep rolling ne? heart

I don't really think of Japanese as a hard language. That is, the spoken language isn't something I'd consider too difficult. The written language is certainly more intense than English, but at least they don't have words where the spelling changes but the pronunciation doesn't!
Read, read (red) there, their, they're our, are then, than affect, effect, affect (emotions)
I'm pretty impressed that people manage to learn English! It's one hell of a language!

@ Mugoi Usagi I am only in 101, maybe Manoa just has a intense course in Japanese but it is definitely not easy. heart I mean we save on some things like only have 4 tenses but the grammar is ridiculous and we are responsible for more than 3,000 Kanji by 201. For example, we have to add endings after converting the tense and verb in our heads while adding a polite tone and ending. *bleh* There are cases where the Japanese pronunciation changes, but not as much as English.
I am with you on English being confusing as a second language though. I would hate to learn English as a second language. xD
At least we all know eventually learning any language is doable.

Well considering I never took a proper class I can't really say how hard it is personally, but I've seen my friends go through hell memorizing stuff and trying to use correct grammar. My boyfriend was actually going to major in it, but half way through he realized it was just too much for him and because of that, the language lost its appeal to major in it. : / My best friend has a minor in it and is currently in Japan, but even she hasn't really grasped the language and is still struggling.
If I remember correctly Japanese is ranked as one of the hardest languages to learn... next to Chinese, English, Tagalog, and some African language that I don't remember the name of. o.o;

@ Abiding Angel I am glad to know it's not just me! I knew that Japanese was ranked as difficult, but I didn't know it was that up there. Nice. I hope it clicks in for me soon, but I am glad to know that even your friend who is in Japan is struggling. I hope she gets through it soon though. Thankfully I am too stubborn to not major in it but I feel your friend's pain. Hopefully this will make me a better tutor in it though.

I may just not have gotten as far into the course as you. I took Japanese in high school so I imagine that it's much less intense than than your course. So...my impressions would be very different from yours.

Here in Hawaii it's offered as a High School course. Where yama and I are from though, only French and Spanish are offered--if we're lucky... and maybe Latin if we're super lucky! That's why I started learning spanish in seventh grade. xD I know how hard it is here though because I see Yama trying to study for the class. It sounds like a bit much when she's trying to explain it to me.

Tagalog is indeed quite difficult to learn. I may be Filipino, but I was born and raised in America for 6 years and when I moved to the Philippines, Filipino was my WORST subject. The grammar is really hard for a first-timer. Haha! It takes years to learn any language. I can speak Tagalog rather fluently now (conversational), but if I have to write literature in Tagalog, I will fail. Haha!

I did French at High School and it was MEGA difficult for me! *dies at thought of having to do it again* Japanese compared to French.... a thousand times easier for me xD Of course I have my days where I just totally cannot learn or remember stuff but I have (most) days when I can have a good conversation or able to write tons of Kanji and able to translate things ^_^

I'm nervous about having to write in Japanese (especially with all those characters) and being able to read and understand it. I'm happy if I can tell it in romaji. I know that the writing is basically translated into romaji in your head, but what I'm worried about is if I can actually tell what is being said to me. What a word is... Etc, and so forth.
I'm going into a minor for it...
