I probably shouldn't have read this book at such a young age, but alas I did. It is by Lorenzo Carcaterra and details how a random prank lead to disaster for himself and his three friends when they were children in the 1960s. Their actions lead them to be sentenced to spend time in a correctional facility which changes their lives forever.
To let you know how young and innocent I was when I read this, I did not know what the word "rape" meant at the time. Yes, it is true. My copy of this book is one of those well-thumbed victims of repeated readings. I've read it at least five or six times. It was one of those cases where I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie, and the movie does it justice even with the small changes.
I was also so obsessed at one point that I wrote a poem based upon the story. I still have it too.

It's been quite a while since I've read that book, but I liked it a lot.

I think I read it when I was about... 13-14? But I think I'd seen/read worse by that time.
It has been a long time since I read it but I can remember it being a very interesting read. When I read it I had little experience with non-fiction and it really opened up the genre for me.
Fantasy Moon, I see from your Listal you've also read Carcaterra's other non-fiction book. He has certainly led an interesting and hard life is all I can say.

I went through a phase where I wanted to read all of Carcaterra's books at one point. I should check and see if he's released anything new since I last read something of his.
Sleepers is a good book. I think more people should read it.
