M'kay, for one: yes, I know how to play an instrument. I play alto saxophone (maybe a little rusty, but with practice, I can be top notch once again).
I was never given the chance to do marching band during high school (except for a few months) because my family moved and I chose not to join that school's marching band (early in my freshman year). I then went to a purely academic school with NO extracurriculars whatsoever (I did college concert band but yes).
I am attending University next year, in which I REALLY want to join marching band, and I know I can handle the music with enough practice, but what I'm really worried about is that I do not remember almost any of the positions/forms/anything of marching band.
I have a friend (we met when I went moved) and she has been in marching band since freshman year. She's going to the same University as me, and we've been pretty good friends even though we go to separate schools. I'm thinking of asking her to show me the basic marching/etc. over the summer before Band Camp.
My university accepts any who pay the fee and sign up, but I'm really worried about not knowing any of the marches. Is it possible that with enough practice with my friend beforehand (who went to be a very competitive football-based marching band) that I will be able to keep up with them? I'm used to memorizing music, yada yada, by the way.

There is always going to be someone who does not know the basics. So do not worry about that. In most universities (depends which one you go to...so I won't say for sure) they have at least one day devoted to reteaching basics. From there it is just remembering as you are actually performing the basics. smile no worries! It isn't as hard as you think nor is it easy as other people think. smile

Ahhh, that's a bit of a relief. I'm still gonna have my friend Leslie help me a bit, though, so I don't look like a total fool. I'm attending University of Houston (in Texas, so BIG football school), so it should be a good time. Thanks!
