Reindeer CLASS: Mammalia
ORDER: Artiodactyla
FAMILY: Cervidae
SUBfamily: Odocoilinae
GENUS & SPECIES: Rangifer tarandus (There are 9 extant, geographically divided subspecies.)
CLASSIFICATION:
Artiodactyla (the even-toed ones) includes a very large number of animals. The Cervids (cervus, Latin for "deer") are all antlered instead of horned (see Antlers and Horns). The 36 species of deer range in size from the huge moose to the diminutive pudu.
The origin of the term Odocoileus is a puzzler, as I have found no etymological reference [Burleigh]. Rangifer and tarandos both mean "reindeer" (Latin and Greek, respectively). The word "deer" has an interesting derivation. It comes through the Anglo-Saxon doer (in German, tier) from the Old Norse dyr and a root that means "rising in a cloud of vapor." This may refer to the fact that where they live is cold and there is always a plume of vapor coming from their nostrils as they breathe. Reindeer is reyndere in Middle English from the Old Norse hreindyri, a root (ker, kr-n) that refers to horns, so these are the "horned vapors."
The word "caribou," as one might surmise, is from a native name for these New World reindeer. It is Canadian French from the Algonquian mekalixpowa - mekal, "to scrape," and ixpo, meaning "snow." The Algonquians called reindeer "the snow shoveler" and the European ear transliterated it from mekalixpo to kalixpo and finally to "caribou."
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Height: 36 - 50 inches (small female to large male)
Weight: 180- 600 pounds, across the various subspecies
Reindeer are different from other species of deer in that both females and males have antlers. The brow tines are palmate and older bulls tend to have palmate end tines. The males are much larger than the females. One subspecies (the Spitsbergen, on the Norwegian-owned islands of that name, near Greenland) is substantially smaller than the other subspecies.
Reindeer hooves appear very over-sized, the coat is very dense and there is a throat mane. Reindeer are the only deer with a furred rhinal (nose) pad. The ears, as would be expected, are small.
Coloration: Basically brown, the dense silver undercoat makes caribou appear gray in winter. The throat, just above the black hooves and under the tail, are cream or white. The antlers are reddish- or grey-brown.
DIET:
Wild: Reindeer eat a wide variety of foods, by seasonal availability. Research shows 760 flowering plants available seasonally and reindeer eat parts of most of them. They eat willow and birch leaves and large amounts of the 250 species of lichen. There are many mosses also available but the reindeer tend not to eat them. Included in their list is a selection of grasses and sedges.
Zoo: Reindeer do not live well in captivity, and attempts to raise them for re-introduction to areas from which they have been extirpated have failed. Mountain grown high-quality hay, supplemented with willow and birch leaves and a wide variety of pressed grains and crackers laced with vitamins and minerals, have had the best results. Still, they are supplemented with injections of vitamins A, D and E. The lichens, something that cannot be grown commercially, seem to be key to their survival. The zoo community is getting better at assessing animal needs but the care of reindeer remains a challenge.

Personality Snapshot: A very caring person at heart, sometimes she expresses her feelings in the wrong way. She's very affectionate with everyone, and needs control under her reins. When chaos ensues… watch out. The wind-controlling Naginata-wielder gets scary. Ryu often has bouts of random moments, such as a random shot of happiness when the situation is tense.

The snow swirled lightly around her outstretched fingers of her left hand, the other clutching tightly to her Reindeer plush. True, she shouldn't be out here. But the meteorologist said this was the last snow of the season, being that it was already spring. Ryu looked down at the plush, smiling as she brought her other hand down to hug him. Though not a moment after she had, did the snow stop. The small storm hadn't made it cool enough to leave snow on the ground. Sighing at the last of her beloved snow, Ryu made her way inside. April 1, 2007 Dear Journal, So, the last of the snow is gone... It's a sad prospect, but it is... Winter's my favorite season because of the snow, and autumn because of the wind. Though, I'm sad because of the change of seasons. Sad day-- What the..? Suddenly the air got cooler in the house, and Ryu looked at the window. It was a BLIZZARD out there. Ryu smiled, scribbling down the last of her journal entry before running outside with Xalisai again. Continued --but the sad day just got better. It started snowing again! Later~! Ryu
