Aside from the odd knick-knack and novelty items one sister or the other had acquired over the years there wasn't much in Kimberly and Kendrix's home that a young child could play with safely. That of course meant that with Shi and Rui's arrival came the need to go to a toy store and pick up things to entertain them.
Kimberly for the moment was unsure if she wanted Shi to have more educational and mentally stimulating toys or just something to mess around and be a kid with. How early was too early to start pushing a kid to be ambitious and focused on the future? Not, that Kim wanted to be one of those overbearing parents who made their kids lives hell she just wanted.. not to fail Shi by leaving her unprepared.
Shi for her own part was skipping on her spindly legs just a bit ahead of Kimberly, the brass bells she wore around her neck and on her hair ties jingling softly as she did so. Toys that were just for her, that she herself could pick, was a novel concept for the little girl. Upon entering the Toys R Us she froze though, past long lines of people standing near beeping machines were walls and wall walls of stuff. She was supposed to pick from all that!

"I don't wanna grow up, I'm a toys R us kiiiiddd!" Drix sang happily as they walked into the store. Rui was flushing slightly at how noisy his mom was and ran into his sister from behind, grunting.
"Why'd you stop?" he asked her quietly, only to look around just as blankly and awed as she had.
"Oooooh, this is gonna be SO fun!" Drix exclaimed gleefully, her grin going from ear to ear. "We need to start with the basics! Balls, cars, and trains!"
Educational toys had never even crossed her mind.

Kimberly wondered, not for the first time, how Drix manged to be such an accomplished painter given the focus it must take when she seemed so utterly flakey. Not that the young woman actually ever expected to figure it out, it was one of the universes great mysteries, like those tootsie pop commercials. "I don't think trains were ever a basic but some remote controlled cars and hmm Nerf gun?" There toys that were fun and improved motor skills and hand eye coordinating.
Shi had taken a half step forward to remain balanced when her brother ran into her then shifted left so they could share the space. Now the bronze skinned girl looked at Rui curiously "What's Nerf?" She knew what a gun was, she'd overhead someone talking about them once but never of the Nerf kind. Shi could only hope Rui might have heard about them because sometimes they had been around and talked to different people at the lab.

Rui looked over at their new mothers, trying to figure it out. A slight frown pulled at his lips as he contemplated the situation very seriously.
"I think..." he said slowly, "it's a toy."
"Oooooh! They have barbie dolls!" Drix said, unaware that her quiet spoken son had said anything at all. "Do you know that changed them recently to have more natural dimensions? They thought that the tiny waist, big boobed versions were making little girls unreasonable in their self image--Teddy bears!!!"
Rui reached for his sister's hand, feeling much like they were being dragged into hell for some reason.

Shi clasped Rui's hand tightly, they could do this together, like getting needles it wasn't as scary if they weren't alone.
The puffy haired girl, tail swaying lazily behind her, held onto her twin as she followed the two adults deeper into the store until they were surrounded on both sides by fuzzy creatures of all shapes and sizes and colours. Shi wasn't entirely sure why but the sight of them made her happy. " I want one of these" she declared softly, it was for the first time in a while something she felt certain about.
"Sure, just maybe not something as big as you okay?" Kimberly having figured that Drix may actually on on to something had lead them to the stuffed animal section, still there was a difference between a toy meant for cuddling and a toy as big as you were that just took up space as you got older.
