Has anyone else seen comedian Arj Barker's rap-parody "Sickest Buddhist"?

Here it is anyway (Warning: swears)

I personally found this hilarious, and I think it's a clever observation about the way some Westerners seem to look at Eastern philosophy as a fashion statement, rather than taking it seriously.

Personally, one of the reasons I don't 'advertise' the fact that I'm Buddhist is because there's that "pot-smoking, sitar-playing, college-student poseur" stereotype, and I don't want to be associated with it. Also, I wouldn't want to influence anyone else to become one of those people.

Anyway, what does everyone else think? Do you ever deal with people who act this way, or who seem to think of Buddhists this way?

Aw that's hilarious! I made sure to give a 5 stars and add it to my favorites! One part that particularly stuck out to me:

"You don't think I'm pacifist? Come up and say that to my face, b***h! I'll separate your teeth from your lips!"

I couldn't hold back my laughter from that!

That was fantastic. Several of the (lets say new converts) Buddhist in my city are a little like that. Now I have to download that and play it at the next get together.

Fantastic video. This really was hilarious and I'll be showing it to a lot of people when the chance presents itself. I also agree that it's a pretty accurate parody of the Western image of Buddhism and Eastern philosophies in general, especially regarding aforementioned individuals that only associate with it for the image and keep it at that kind of superficial level.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the vast majority of responses to the video were positive, since in most cases comments are my least favorite thing to see when viewing stuff on Youtube. Indirect conversation really can bring out the worst in a lot of people.

Personally, I also don't advertise my philosophies to avoid being considered a "new convert" kind of Buddhist myself, as well as simply because I hate discussing religion and ESPECIALLY politics with most people (even some of my friends). Both topics seem to be way too inflammatory to bring up casually, and far too many people can't handle other people disagreeing with them over anything.. or just having ideas that aren't carbon copies of their own.

Anyway, it's time for me to go nail a 45 minute meditation in 10 and make the powers of now look like the powers of then! But seriously, thanks again for sharing the vid. =D

Oh, please don't get me wrong. I have nothing against new converts seeking meaning for their lives, some oneness, some calmness. The eye rolls and facepalms are over those who seek the middle way to anger a parent or because naruto told you too, or you're just a really big fan of Richard Gere. Those make my brain hurt.

xd That was ridiculous. Made me laugh though. Definitely mocks the stereotypical Western views on Buddhism.

I havent had to deal with many people like that. I have had to deal with friends and family that think that though. They learned quickly that their views were wrong. 3nodding

I've also had to explain why I had a swastika on my desktop before. My friend thought I was a Nazi for a second. Again, she learned quickly that I wasn't.
