In the bible, it says that if one of the parts are your body is making you sin (Hands, eyes, legs) Jesus says to cut it off because, it is better to have one eye, leg, hand, etc. than to have your whole body in hell.

Well, I have sinned with my eyes and hands before and uhm.. in the bible, Jesus says if you cut it off its better than going to hell and your whole body burning..

I don't want to go against Jesus's word but... .__.
I need help.. I don't think I have the guts to cut my arm off or gouge my eye out..

What if I asked for forgiveness? Will i still have to cut my arm off? or gouge my eye out?

Haha, I think the general interpretation of this is figurative, not literal!! In fact, I should hope it's not literal because it also says that the nature of man is sin....I think what God was trying to say here is, if something is tempting you, then just walk away. If you're sinning because of the video games you play, then it's better not to play them than to risk sinning again.

Wiffles, the nature of forgivness is to forgive the people because we sin. God knows already that we're going to go against him. But he loves us so much he's going to say 'I forgive you' if you ask for it. He'll forgive anything you can possibly in all the world do, even though it breaks his heart. But this verse is suggesting we avoid dangerous situations all toghether.

Also, I believe sin comes from the soul, and not from any direct body part....so I think if God created us, he'd know that! smile

Jesus did have a few harsh sermons, didn't He?

I have to agree with Viper, but I'd also stick closer to the original sentiments of the comment.

At the time Christ was speaking (and I'll leave it to some of our historians to correct me if I'm wrong), there was a belief that when a person died, the body had to be intact for burial. Someone buried incomplete would not be permitted to "the afterlife" (this was largely a pagan belief) Variations of this belief persist even today, and influence a lot of stories. But Jesus seems to be saying, "Hey, better to be incomplete in Heaven than intact in Hell".

Also, look what He's suggesting we throw away. Hand, foot, eye ... all pretty important, right? But they're not important enough to make sin worthwhile. Better to throw those away than to indulge in sin.

On the good side ... we know that "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). To me, that says that He'll forgive us, and throwing out body parts won't be required. Heck, it's not like we can earn our way into Heaven doing that, anyway.
