Color Wheel Post One: Introduction The Color Wheel and Your Avatar • • • • This thread provides a basic introduction to the color wheel and some associated terms. Suggestions are given on how to use the color wheel to choose the color scheme for your outfit. These suggestions can apply to all styles, not just matching. You can make an awesome amorphous blob, themed, realistic... You wouldn't use these suggestions for a cosplay since you want to make the cosplay look exactly like an existing character. Other than that, run with it. :} Big note: You don't have to follow this advice when picking colors for your avatars. Avatars can still look awesome, even if the color palette does not follow this advice. As long as you spread the colors evenly around your matching avatar, you'll be fine. These tips are provided for those who are interested. Not interested? Then don't worry about it. =) The examples are nowhere near perfect. It's not easy to find Gaia items the exact same shades/tints on the color wheel and make matching avatars with them. They at least get the gist across. §► Index Post One: Introduction Post Two: The Color Wheel Post Three: Hue and Values Post Four: Color Theme: Monochromatic Post Five: Color Theme: Analogous Colors Post Six: Color Theme: Complementary Colors Post Seven: Color Theme: Split Complementary Color Scheme Post Eight: Color Theme: Triadic Colors

Color Wheel Post Two: The Colors • • • • This post provides a basic look at the colors on the color wheel. Primary Colors The primary colors are the root colors that you can combine to create all the other colors on the color wheel. There are a couple different sets of primary colors depending on what medium you're working with. Here, we'll stick to the elementary school definitions. The three primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Secondary Colors The secondary colors are made by evenly mixing two primary colors. For example, red plus yellow equals orange.Tertiary ColorsTertiary colors are made by mixing a secondary color plus one of the primary colors sitting beside it. For example, orange plus red equals orange-red. Orange plus yellow equals yellow-orange.Warm ColorsWarm colors are bright. They include the red/orange/yellow side of the wheel. Cool ColorsCool colors are very calm. They include the green/blue/purple side of the wheel.

Color Wheel Post Three: Hue and Values • • • • This post will give you a basic introduction to the various values of colors. Hue The name of the pure color. On the example color wheel, the hue is yellow-green.ValueHow light or dark a color is. The value is described with the words shade, tint and tone.ShadeHue plus black. This makes the color darker.TintHue plus white. This makes the color lighter.ToneHue plus a small amount of grey or the color opposite the hue. This mutes down the color and makes it less bright.Complement TintThis is the tint plus a small amount of grey or color opposite the hue. This mutes the tint and makes it less bright.Intensity/SaturationThis is the degree of how strong the original hue is. An intense color is very pure and bright. A color becomes less intense if another lighter or darker color is added. Shades, tints and tones are all less bright than the original hue. • • • • In regard to Gaia and matching avatars You don't have to worry about these terms. Just understand that colors come in various shades and tints. Therefore, the gaia items come in various shades and tints. Don't pick out any two "green" items and assume that they match. The Wrinkled Green Shirt does not match the Green Dragon Silk Pants. Look at the avatar on the left and you can see this for yourself. You must use your eyes. You won't always be able to find items that have the exact same color value. You must still try to find items that are as close in value as possible. Often, the easiest way to find matching items is to use a set. A set of items is a group of items that was released as a ready-made outfit. An example is the "g-lol" set or the "radicool" set. Do not wear whole sets. Avatars that are made up mostly of sets are unoriginal and uncreative. Try to find matching items that come from different sets. (If the items aren't big, you might be able to get away with using 2-3 items from one set. Only do that if you have no other options.)

Color Wheel Post Eight: Color Theme: Triadic Colors • • • • Triadic Colors The triadic color scheme uses three colors that are equally spaced around the color wheel. This color scheme has both contrast and harmony. This color scheme will probably give you the best balance of the color richness you get from the analogous color scheme and the high contrast you get from the complementary color scheme.
An example of a triadic color scheme is green, orange and purple. Another example is red, blue and yellow.

While I haven't received any requests lately, people used to suggest that color wheel info be added to the guide. Here it finally is for those who'd like to work with a color wheel. :}
I skimmed many sites on the internet for the definitions of the color terms and the ideas of the color schemes. The color wheel images were obtained through a random photobucket and google images search. I transferred the urls to my own photobucket account. [Colored Pencil Wheel] [First Color Wheel] [Second Color Wheel] Thanks to Kumi for helping me with some of the model images while I was making this guide.
