It's a well known fact that Square tends to use and reuse many elements commonly found in nearly all Final Fantasy games. The currency, Gil or G... There's always a Character named Cid and usually a Biggs and Wedge (must have been some Star Wars fans in the development teams)... Magic is virtually the same... and certain design elements, like the Shinra and Galbabian soldeirs, are often recycled. Furthermore, even though none of the games with their own unique number are related, you will sometimes find references to other Final Fantasy Games.... For example, In VIII, if you go to the Esthar Shopping mall, one of the stores is called "Cloud's Shop"... not surprisingly, it's a weapon shop. In X-2, there is a kid named Shinra, too.

Also in IX there is a weapon shop in Lindblum which has a Buster Sword on the wall, and upon inspection the following message appears:
"I remember a guy with spiky hair who carried a sword like this..."
In fact IX has a lot of allusions to the previous games. For example Steiner and his Knights of Pluto each loosely bear similar traits to each of the earlier games protagonists. Check out the wiki page on allusions for more info.
And in the deepest, darkest reaches of the FFX disc there is a Buster Sword which is inaccessible without hacking the game. Another wiki link.

Surprisingly, no. It's a Tidus weapon, he uses it backwards (blade-edge out) like Zack. There is a youtube video of it in use (obviously from a hacked version of the game).
