Doesn't her hide shine like summer? Those were the first words Korianth had spoken to him. Words that had echoed through his mind as he'd watched the gold of the clutch impress. Words he hadn't expected, nor known quite how to deal with. And J'tren had agreed that it did, though he had done so through a whirl of emotion and thought not his own, a sensation he was still trying to sort himself out of.
It was disconcerting, really. He was a private person, by no means accustom to the press of another person in his room, let alone in his head. Now, here was Korianth, who itched and hungered and dreamed and needed and--
I am trying to think quietly, Mine.
No, Kori. It's not you. It's just, new. None-the-less, he had skipped all but the briefest appearance at the feast, snagging a few finger rolls and ducking out again. It'd given him a chance to get settled in the barracks before the other Weyrling's arrived. As they now were, a process that Korianth watched with considerable interest. J'tren could feel his excitement.
She'll be here soon. The dragon sent, all but wagging his tail.
And he could have asked who, if the knowledge wasn't already there, if his mind wasn't already bright gold with Korianth's thoughts.

Andere and Kanaleth had quite enjoyed the Feast; the seacrafter may have been very new to High Reaches, but the riders who'd joined her had all been pleasant company. She hadn't gotten to know them well, but that was to be expected. All in all, the redhead couldn't find anything to complain about (even if she had been slightly less than productive today). It was then Kanaleth bumped into her leg purposefully, her blue eyes whirling as she glanced up at her new rider.
I think today has been very productive, the dragon pointed out as they walked back to the barracks. After all, how many times are you going to Impress to me, Mine? Kanaleth's voice was light and melodic; even after all the festivities and the gold's hopeless quest to meet everyone at the feast, the young dragon showed no signs of tiring. Weren't baby dragons supposed to nap a lot?
Besides, the hatchling continued, pausing only long enough for her rider to open to the door, we met many others. That is very productive, you know, because we are all- Oh.
Kanaleth stopped dead in her tracks, nearly taking out Andere in the process. Gracefully side-stepping, the redhead halted next to the gold and glanced around. What? she asked, having quickly caught on to the think-and-not-speak. What's wrong, Kanaleth? The gold glanced up and nudged the navigator's leg as if to assure her that it was nothing to be concerned about before surging into a steady trot, leaving a bewildered young woman in the doorway.
Korianth! she cried, quickly making her way to the dark blue's side. I missed you at the Hatching feast! Mine, come, and meet Korianth's.
Doing as she was told, Andere allowed Kanaleth to beckon her over, extending her hand to the young man she could only assume was the blue's rider. "Hello," she said by way of simple greeting. "I am Andere, and this is Kanaleth. She is very happy to see you, it seems."

Instantly, J'tren was in love. His heart sped up, his breathing felt heavy and uncomfortably loud. His stomach knotted, and he could only hope his tail wasn't wagging.
Wait. No. Not him. Korianth. Which was good, because newly impressed Weyrling or no, J'tren was relatively certain that he wasn't supposed to be filled with admiring thoughts about a very particular shade of gold.
Mind, this--
This could be a problem too. But one he wasn't going to think about while the new goldrider was introducing herself.
"A pleasure to meet you, goldrider," J'tren replied, not taking her hand immediately. First, he bowed, not deeply but deep enough to satisfy the distant, scolding voice of his mother. When he straightened, it was with a smile, and when he shook her hand his grip was firm, if not particularly powerful. "I would be J'tren, I guess. And I believe Korianth has been waiting for your Kanaleth."
Korianth, meanwhile, had fought past his initial heart-in-throat reaction to Kanaleth's arrival and was butting his head against the gold's shoulder in enthusiastic greeting.
Mine needed rest, he explained, not apologizing for what he was willing to see as a necessity. His mind-voice was sweet and almost smoky, dark as his hide but sparkling with excitement at seeing Kanaleth. But I waited for you here. I knew I would not miss you. You fill the whole room with light.

"You guess?" Andere placed one hand on her hip once J'tren had released it and fixed the new bluerider with a look that could only be labeled appraising. "Well, dragonrider, it's best you figure that out." The redhead smiled, reaching over to give J'tren a friendly pat on the shoulder. What a strange boy. But if Kanaleth liked his blue, he couldn't be all bad. (Though, Andere was quickly coming to suspect her dragon had a kind word for everyone.)
I see, Kanaleth was saying to her clutchmate, a sage nod. Hatching can be a very tiring event. Mine needed to meet others; she misses her brothers, but she will come to that High Reaches is the very best place to be. We cannot stay here, Mine says we get our own space, but I insisted we visit. I missed you at the feast, the Queen insisted, apparently unphased by the lavish praise Korianth was laying upon her.
Instead, she settled by his side, flopping over as the long day finally began to catch up to the hatchling. Her eyes still sparkled bright and she reached out with a claw to nudge at the midnight blue, a low rumble sounding deep within. I am not tired yet. We should get ours to play, I think. Kanaleth paused them, her steady gaze locking onto Andere. Mine! Korianth's wants to play with you. Go! It is important to make new friends.
Andere sighed and shook her head, sparing the silly bluerider an amused look. I'm not sure, Kanaleth. I think he might be tired, or in shock, or something. He can barely remember his name. Perhaps we should wait until tomorrow.
Nonsense! There is no time like the present!

"Well, I haven't really decided yet, to be honest." The new bluerider replied, apparently taking Andere's comment at face value. "J'tren, J'yt, J'ter, J'ren. They all sound a bit silly when you've spent twenty turns being Jaytren already."
He shifted a bit uneasily, not entirely sure how to take the level appraisal of this new acquaintance. He wasn't much of an 'appraiser' himself. He tended, all to often, to see what he believed was there instead of what existed, and that didn't take much appraising at all.
Mine, please make a good impression. The dragon requested, more wistful than forceful in his request.
And being, of course, miserable at this sort of thing, and new to mindspeech, J'tren replied aloud. "I think that'd require knowing what she's impressed by, Kori."
And then, with a horrified blush, "Sorry. Umm. Korianth is concerned that I'm not presenting myself well to you."
Mine is-- well he is used to being by himself. I think he was not expecting me to find him. The blue explained, apologetically, as he settled beside Kanaleth's side. But he will make friends with yours. How could they not be friends?
The logic seemed simple enough to the blue. Look how happy he was now that Kanaleth had found him! Certainly, His should be equally happy with Hers. I am glad you came here first. I wish you could stay. I will be lonely without you. It is important, though, that you have your own space.
But, she was here now, and that was enough. If only theirs would be equally happy in each other's company. We are settled here, Mine. Go with Kanaleth's. Offer her some meat.
I don't think that works with people, Kori. We usually offer Klah, and she just came from the feast.
You complicate things too much, Mine. Just tell she is nice, and that you will be her friend.

Oh dear. I think he might be a little slow, Kanaleth.
Mine! Do not speak of Korianth's like that! Kanaleth's tone was sharp, the gold twitching her tail as she fixed Andere with a firm look. You have only just met him, do not be so quick to judge. Today Korianth found him, it has been a long day. Rustling her wings, the gold watched her rider until she agreed. Only then did she nod and allow Andere to drop her gaze, once again awarding her clutchmate her full attention.
Resting her head on Korianth's back, she announced, You and Yours are welcome to visit anytime, Korianth. Whenever you are feeling lonely, our door is always open to you. That is not to say Kanaleth would ever to close it to someone else, but the dark blue dragon held a special place in her heart, and he might sit on a pedestal just a little higher than all the others. Closing her eyes, she sighed, completely content.
Andere watched the pair of dragons, lifting a hand to her lips as she smiled. "Friends from the egg, I suppose," she commented quietly, glancing over at the blue's rider. "For what it's worth, I think you had it right the first time. J'tren is a much stronger than the others," Andere offered with a small smile. "I suppose that's a pleasant thing about being a female rider. I will remain Andere, though I will certainly miss the sea." She sighed wistfully and glanced towards the dragon pile. "I suppose the exchange was in my favor, however."

Unaware that a certain gold dragon was jumping to his defense, or, for that matter, that a certain gold rider was getting the exact sort of bad impression he often gave, J'tren watched the stare down between the two with mild confusion. He was polite enough, however, not to ask.
"Then J'tren it will remain," he agreed, amiably enough. "It seems appropriate, really, if a bit silly. A new name for a new identity. If you leave behind all those things you identify yourself with, and choose some new alliance, doesn't that make you someone else? For you, the sea. For me--" A wry grin, "Being useless, I suppose. And now you are Kanaleth's rider and I am Korianth's."
His expression settled as he considered his own words, studying Korianth and becoming more serious. "I am sorry that you have to leave behind something you love. I am not losing much, really. Privacy. I think you'll find the Weyr endearing, though. I hope so."
And if you are ever lonely, you need only call me, and I will come. Technically, he would have no choice, but that was not the point of this particular offer. I do not think we have a door. But-- I will always be where you need me to be.

Useless? Oh ho ho, there would be no more of that if Andere and Kanaleth had anything to say about it. (As it were, the gold pair both issued an unimpressed snort when J'tren admitted to as much.)
"Well, I wouldn't worry about the notion of being useless for much longer," Andere felt the need to comfort him. "I run a tight ship and I will see to it that everyone is appropriately assigned to a position that suits them." The redhead paused and cleared her throat, folding her arms behind her. It would be much harder to organize a Weyr than a ship, but she might as well start with her clutchmates. "Well. That is, when the dragons are older. For now, I suppose it is best I actually just...meet people."
A very good start, Kanaleth murmured encouragingly.
Pressing the back of her hand to her lips, Andere attempted to stifle a yawn. "Hmm? Oh, yes. I'm not entirely...sure how I feel about it yet. I came to High Reaches because my brother insisted I should at least give it a try, having been Searched, but I don't think anyone expected me to Impress, much less the Queen. I know I certainly did not."
You are Mine, came the sleepy reply. I would find you where ever you were. The young dragon yawned and shuffled, making herself more comfortable curled against Korianth's dark blue body. Kanaleth hummed, nuzzling the dark blue as he made his offer. What a sweet boy!
I will never hesitate to ask, she replied, and it was true. She had the utmost faith in her brother.
Andere watched the adorable pair of dragons, unable to keep from smiling. "I suppose we shouldn't actually let them fall asleep..."

Kerthunk. The gears in J'tren's head were doubtless making the most horrendous grinding sound as he forced himself to adjust, with uncomfortable speed and force, to the fact he had allowed himself to forget. Namely, that Andere was, indeed, his superior and he was not to be simply-- chattering at her like an Auntie by the fire. It was Korianth that'd done it. His ease and comfort with the gold rolled off him like a wave, and it'd allowed J'tren, however briefly, to forget his place.
Andere had reminded him though, with her comment about keeping him in line. And if his reaction wasn't blatant, it was hardly subtle. He stood straighter, and his voice held an odd mix of friendliness and formality, the sort of friendly used for reporting to superiors, or meeting potential patrons. "Of course, Goldrider. I assure you Korianth and I will do whatever is asked of us."
They would too. Not a scrap more, maybe. But what was asked, they'd do to a T.
"I'll take Korianth off now." He reached down, giving the blue a gentle shake. "We're sorry to have kept you from your rest."
Korianth separated himself from Kanaleth reluctantly. Goodnight, Kanaleth. He rubbed his head against the gold's shoulder as he stood and moved to J'tren's side. Dream of pretty things. I will dream of you.
