The Terrible Telgar Trio are approaching adulthood, and with the graduation looming ever closer the Weyrlingmaster must make the ultimate decision: let them graduate and become full members of the Weyr or keep them as Sr. Weyrlings. Kannaroth's outburst at the Hatching certainly didn't help their case, neither did bluerider L'pin's interest in them. With time running out, it is up to the greenriders to prove their worth as Wingriders or else remain Weyrlings for the rest of their time at the Weyr.

OOC Notes
- The rank change is an entirely IC thing. The greens will still grow to adult lines.
- There are several options for these greens, which will be outlined below. Should you feel there would be something else that would benefit your character, please feel free to suggest it! I'm open for pretty much any plots, so long as they make sense with the Weyr.
- This is an opportunity for your greenrider to change the views of the Weyr majority. They do not have to do anything if you don't want them to. This is not an obligatory RP OR ELSE NO ART thing. If you think it's more IC for them to stay on the fringes of Telgar society that is entirely up to you. I'm not going to force anyone to anything.
- This doesn't have to be RPed out if you don't want to, as long as there is some sign that it's occurring (i.e. you can just write journals about it if you want).

The Options
- Dragonrider Mentoring: As outlined in the previous announcement about them, we can follow through with this plot if someone really wants it. It would involve one greenrider and one PC dragonrider. Lessons should be run by me, but this would pretty much be a player-to-player driven plot. The rider chosen needs to be approved by me, which would equal IC approval by Malkai.

- One to One Bonding: Not quite the same as mentorship, but more of a character development route with the characters J'ev, Norra, I'dan or Faltar. In the case of J'ev and Norra, they need help with the younger riders and the candidates. This would be ideal for a character who is craving responsibility or wants to have influence over younger members of the Weyr community. For I'dan, you would be helping out with his wing since he's the most tolerant. Imagine cabin boy style duties, only for the wing. It would be beneficial for a character who wanted to rub elbows with someone high up in the Weyr food chain or was craving some kind of acceptance. Working with Faltar would involve working with a dragonhealer. It would be ideal for a character who wants to help people/dragons or who wants to be more involved with the community.

- Weyrling For Now: Greenriders who would like to stay Weyrlings and at a later date prove themselves worthy of being bumped up (or not) are welcome to do so. It's simply a matter of doing nothing new.

- Insert Idea Here: Have another idea you think would be interesting for character development? Feel free to toss it up here and we'll see if it's workable!

Questions/concerns/comments should be directed to me. You can catch me in thread or on AIM (ph34rthesheepcat) if you need to.

The Greenriders:
Y'kar and green Kannaroth - Wing boy for I'dan
PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2010 5:43 pm

Y'kar would pounce on the chance to cosy up to I'dan, he wants to prove himself and Kannaroth, and he wants to get close to people with power! For her part Kanna will go along with it; she doesn't feel the need to show that she's awesome, but she knows she'll be able to get nicer things as a wingrider than as a sr. weyrling so she'll try not ot mess it up XD

A'li would gladly offer up himself to J'ev or Norra as he could hark back on the days of looking after his younger sisters and keeping them in line. Nellath would simply go along with it as long as it doesn't make her clutchmates take any kind of "back seat" on their priorities. No new arrivals are worth her time as much as her sisters, so as long as they keep out of her way she can put up with it. Mostly.

Wow. I guess Jasrai's the difficult one here.

She would probably prefer a None of the Above option when it comes to the One to One Bonding, but since that's the way everyone else is going she'd probably go along with it and end up working with Faltar, though she's just as happy not being particularly involved with the community and has relatively minimal interest in helping other people or dragons. Her personal preference would probably have been to help with I'dan's wing, but she wouldn't want to tread on Y'kar's toes or mess up his chances.

However, Jasrai definitely doesn't want to remain a weyrling, though it might prove interesting plot-wise if she did. I feel like that would probably be one of those things that would have her closing herself off from A'li and Y'kar completely and deciding she didn't need any of them at all except Roseth and the firelizards. She would probably give in to Roseth's desire to show off the tricks they'd been working on in private, just to prove that she's as good as the others.

@ Fey: She can definitely go with another NPC (currently on the list or one I can make up for her) if she'd like to do something else? I just listed the three I thought would offer the three most different options.

@ ALL:
Thank you for being so prompt! There are several ways to get the ball rolling here:

1 - A prompt-response style post by me which will detail Malkai's "talk" to all the greenriders and her explanation of their choices. It would basically end with her being like "report back to me with your decision in a seven day or else I'm not allowing you to graduate." It could be something you guys write up a response to as a solo

2 - A group RP with all of us in which she'll tell them the same things (they'll just have more room for responses).

3 - One on one discussions with the Weyrwoman, which I can do individually with everyone.

As to your person of choice for 1-to-1, how much or little RP you want to do is entirely up to you. I'm up for anything. <3

I don't want to cause you extra work, Chibi. I'll just say Jasrai decided to go with Faltar. He'd probably be the best bet anyway - she might pick up some useful skills.

I think I'd prefer the first option, with the prompt-response style. That way it won't take so long for all of us to get responses, since we seem to be scattered across a lot of timezones. cool

(By the way, this is a pretty neat idea).

I like the first option as well; it'll get things moving the best, I think. ^^

I ditto the rest. x3 Time zones make it seem the easiest method to me, like Feyluff said.

It was mid afternoon when Kaveth summoned the three greens to the council chamber. Any duties they were performing could wait; they had been excused by a goldrider. Malkai was waiting for them to arrive, sitting straight backed in her chair.

She had thought that by convincing the rider community to shape the greenriders the problem of their lack of discipline would be solved. The lack of interest had been unfortunate, but not totally unexpected. It meant, however, that she would once again have to take matters into her own hands. That was why she had summoned J'ev, Norra, Faltar and I'dan to the council room a sevenday ago. Each had been told that they would receive one greenrider to mentor and monitor their progress. If they showed sufficient maturity and discipline, she would allow them to graduate. Should they behave like Kannaroth at the Hatching, well....

Malkai had no qualms about keeping them down forever.

When her company arrived, the Weyrwoman greeted them with a curt nod. There were never any niceties with her, especially not with those who did not hold her favour. The trio was left to stand while she surveyed them silently. Finally, she said, "I have been monitoring your progress for a long time, greenriders. At the rate you are going, I have no reason to approve your graduation from Sr. Weyrling rank." As blunt as usual, Malkai only paused a moment to let her words sink in. "I am, however, willing to give you a second chance. On each of these hides you will find a list of Weyr staff that is willing to take you under their wing. You will spend all of your chore time with them providing the necessary assistance. You will be at their beck and call during all hours of the day or night. You will do as they say, when they say it, or you will not graduate."

The Weyrwoman stood and pushed the three pieces of hide towards the riders. "You have a sevenday to tell me what you wish to do. If you do not reply by then, then you do not deserve a second chance. You are dismissed."

The paper reads:

Weyrlingmaster J'ev
- Assisting with Weyrling lessons (i.e. helping move equipment, being an example in class, killing wherries, lesson preparation)
- Supervising and helping with Weyrling duties (i.e. couch mucking)
- Reporting disputes and overseeing punishments
- Assisting J'ev with regular rider duties (i.e. bathing his dragon)

Headwoman Norra
- Chalkboard management
- Crèche duty
- Hide checking
- Visitations (infirmary, kitchens, etc)
- Interviews for new Weyr residences
- Laundry duty
- Handing out candidate chore assignments

Wingleader I'dan
- Report writing (ex. weather, Wing progress)
- Designing and participating in flight formations
- Playing the "mock thread" for Thread drills
- Making sure leather is always available for straps
- Aiding in sweeps
- Studying archive material and reporting back

Dragonhealer Faltar
- Herb cataloguing
- Visiting patients
- Washing instruments
- Assisting with Weyrling and wing dragon checkups
- Firelizard checkups
- Providing informational seminars to new flit owners

He had been waiting for the other shoe to drop ever since the hatching, and Kannaroth's little comment. No matter how amusing she had been, how observent she had been, and no matter that she'd done no harm, he had known that punishment would follow. When Malkai had summoned them he had been fairly sure that said other shoe was going to hit him on the head and knock his brains out of his ears. As it was, it struck a glancing blow, and incidentally seemed to have a large stash of marks inside it.

Jackpot.

He had told Kannaroth to tell the others that he wanted to assist I'dan the moment he had spotted the option. Luckily for him, there hadn't been any resistance. A chance to rub shoulders with I'dan. If this was what happened when Kannaroth mouthed off he should get her to do it more often... but no. No. This was a one off, an enormous piece of luck, and incidentally their last chance to prove themselves. Completing all of their lessons competently wasn't enough, he had to prove that he could keep Kannaroth from speaking out of turn whilst on duty, or at all to the wrong people.

It was not going to be easy, not in the least, but he wanted it enough to try. Luckily, the sharp-tongued green grudgingly admitted that she wanted to graduate more than she wanted to snark everyone between and back too, though she claimed it had been a very close run thing. She wanted nicer things, unlike her sisters she couldn't care less about what people thought of her, but she wanted nice things, and so she would do her best to hold her tongue when necessary.

So it was that two days later, Y'kar saluted to Malkai before settling into fiddling with the hides he had brought along. To her he presented the face of a nervous yet determined young rider, one who was sure he and His were worthy of a place in a wing and desperate to prove it. Internally, he had to admit that he truly was more than a little nervous. Last chance. He couldn't mess this up. "Weyrwoman Malkai, as instructed I am reporting back with... with my plan." Glance down at the hides, nibble lower lip, look back up. "I wish to assist Wingleader I'dan. I have brought with me reports on the weather of the last sevenday, and predictions for the rest of today and tomorrow. I've also brought, err, some flight formation plans; only rough I'm afraid because though I know the make up of his wing I don't know the strengths and weaknesses of each pair, m'am, so it's only based on colours and what I've been able to observe of size..." So far this seemed to be going well; he was getting his point across, showing he was willing to take work on under his own power, but keeping up the air of nervousness.

"Other than that m'am," he continued, fiddling with the hides for a moment before appearing to notice he was doing it and apparently forcing himself to stop, "I believe Kannaroth and I are up to the challenge of being the mock Thread. As she's a small green her endurance isn't very good, but her speed and agility will allow us to provide a challenging mock fall m'am and, umm, if you and Wingleader I'dan approve it, in any spare time I have I'd like to teach my firelizards to drop mock Thread as well. They couldn't drop much of course, but bunched together they could drop enough to simulate a wayward clump... I'm grateful for this last chance m'am," he added, apparently spontaneously. "I know Kannaroth is... well... mouthy, has been mouthy in the past that is, but she has promised to curb her tongue and I'll hold her to that m'am and... I believe that we can be as good a pair as any other green and her rider so... yes, so I'm grateful for a chance to prove it m'am."

That, he supposed, was that. There was nothing to do now but wait for her response, and then to throw himself into everything I'dan told him to do. He would make the Weyr see what an amazing dragon Kannaroth was. He would not fail.

Jasrai had left her fair of firelizards in her weyr, guessing that the weyrwoman would not welcome an invasion of six firelizards. Even Flynx, her near-constant bronze ornament, and Satish, his perpetual companion, had been left behind. If they were there for a formal reprimand, Jasrai didn't want her firelizards present and bent on defending her from Malkai. Without at doubt, that would end very, very badly.

Why would you think you'd be in trouble? Roseth asked. We've done nothing wrong.

Other than practicing trick flying, which puts both of us at risk. I'm pretty sure that would be a good reason for her to reprimand me. But since the others are here, too, I don't think it's that. Jasrai was reassuring herself as much as her dragon. Let me listen, please.

She stood uncomfortably with A'li and Y'kar while Malkai spoke. Jasrai could feel Roseth's outrage at the weyrwoman's assessment of their progress, and she wasn't too pleased with it either, but she bit her tongue. They had mastered every skill they'd been taught, even if it hadn't been quickly or easily. Roseth had to struggle to contain her frustration. Jasrai imagined she would fume for hours after the meeting.

Jasrai couldn't help being intrigued by the option they were being given, even though it was highly unconventional, as far as Jasrai knew. She didn't find anything wrong with being assigned to a specific area to do chores, and after quickly surveying the sheet she felt her heart beat faster. A chance to work with I'dan and possibly demonstrate her competence would be perfect, she thought.

As she thought this and Roseth began to comprehend what was going on, Roseth said that Y'kar and Kannaroth desired that assignment. Jasrai wouldn't take the opportunity from Y'kar. She couldn't bring herself to do that. He and his dragon had so much ambition, the assignment would really work much better for them. Which meant she would have to think about her other options. They were less appealing.

She took the hide which came to her and departed after having been dismissed. She and Roseth would have a lot to discuss in the coming sevenday.
_____

It had taken four days for Jasrai to convince to agree with her.

Roseth hungered for the opportunity to show off for J'ev and the new weyrlings. It tempted her incredibly. However, Jasrai was finally able to persuade her to see reason. For one thing, Jasrai would be helping out with a number of less pleasant tasks that she would really rather avoid if at all possible. She'd been immeasurably pleased when Roseth had no longer required her to clean up after her. For another thing, the idea of Jasrai settling disputes and overseeing punishments was just laughable. This was Telgar. There was no way she'd be able to exercise any authority like that. Shells, they wouldn't even want her demonstrating, probably. So while it might have been a perfect fit for the dragon, it simply wouldn't work for the human.

Neither one of them much liked the idea of working under Norra. Not that either of them disliked the headwoman, but the duties which would come with serving her were largely uninteresting. The sort of busywork that would lead Jasrai to say something regrettable and bore Roseth. Neither was a good option. And I'dan was already out of the question, since Y'kar wanted that assignment. Which left her with only one choice, really.
_____

Jasrai stood at attention before Malkai. After being acknowledged, she forced herself to keep her gaze level, looking at Malkai's chin. She wasn't very good at meeting superiors' eyes. She told herself it was respectful not to stare directly into someone's eyes anyway, and reminded herself that many people were uncomfortable meeting others' eyes. She didn't think Malkai was one of them, but she could pretend.

"Weyrwoman," she said respectfully. "I have reached a decision with regard to the opportunity you offered me for the future. I would like to be assigned to work under Dragonhealer Faltar. I hope, under his direction, to acquire skills which will benefit my dragon and the Weyr at large. I hope you will find my decision acceptable."

Being small and skinny and intimidated worked for Y'kar and being kind and mothering worked for A'li. Jasrai could follow neither course, and so she could only present herself as a clear-headed, competent young woman and hope everyone else bought into it.

Being called out over incompetencies was not something A'li was very fond of. Whether or not it was being said that way in those exact words, the Weyrwoman was definitely giving off that vibe. Being held back from reaching Wingrider status was far down on his list of things to do. As if they needed more problems for Nellath and her sisters, and his fellow greenriders in this.

Nellath didn't hesitate to let him know her opinion of this issue either. She was competent, if any of their work was slow going it was her size and she learned her landings now to deal with it! They were just picking at her and her clutchmates. Tuning her ranting out for long enough to continue listening to their lecture. The proposition to take on a new job to prove they are capable, that catches his interest. Looking over the list on his hide, pausing when his eyes skimmed I'dan's name. Nellath chimed in telling him her sister and Hers wanted that task, which was fine by him. Most likely that Wing would be filled with men and he did not want to be surrounded.

Once dismissed, he bid a quick goodbye to Jasrai and Y'kar to reach Nellath and go over their options. I'dan was out of the question, and while the Headwoman was a woman and therefor someone he might be able to put up with spending time doing work for, some of the tasks did not look interesting.

The prospect of possibly scaring a few Weyrlings into shape appealed to Nellath, and dealing with people younger than him, in at least some of their cases, it did have him thinking back to home and watching over his sisters. Having to deal with being around a man and taking orders from him would have to be dealt with eventually if he wanted to be in a Wing someday, and one at a time sounded like a fair way to do it.

~

It took two days to settle on the choice. A little nudge from Nellath confirmed it, and he made his way to Malkai's office to report his decision. Standing straight up and fairly confident, even the highest ranked in the Weyr she was still female and had an easier vibe to deal with than it would have been if they were reporting to a high-ranked male rider. "Weyrwoman I've made my decision." A short pause to gather the right words and he nods. "I would like to assist Weyrlingmaster J'ev, Nellath might not be the prime example of a green with her attitude at times, yes, but for younger dragons she will behave. I raised my younger sisters and kept them in line back home before being Searched, so I have some experience in dealing with reporting troubles, disputes. I think that I could pull my weight in assisting him and Nellath may smooth her edges a bit with younger dragons in closer proximity." Nellath's comment on that however might say otherwise but there may be some they could bond with as more surrogate sisters. You really did never know.
