A few days after the hatching and in the most technical of senses, Roni was still a candidate. That was, she still wore the knot that indicated her as such and still had the chores associated with said 'honor'. But, well, whether she'd actually stay until the next clutch was laid, that depended on who you asked. And it was probably best not to ask her. If she had an opinion in the matter, she was certainly keeping it to herself.

At the moment, her usual candidate chores had been interrupted when a rider had grabbed her and sent her on a quick errand to the kitchens. Having just finished her little delivery service stint, she was walking back along the lake, through the grassy areas where many of the dragons enjoyed sunning themselves.

Mostly, she tried to give them a wide berth, from respect, or fear, or both. But dragon dodging could be difficult as evening fell and dodging away from one seemed to bring her all that much closer to the next. Good thing they were so big and flashy or she was sure she'd step on a tail. And then the dragon would get mad, and then the rider would get mad and then they'd kick her out of the Weyr. And her brother. And her father would go out of business. And they'd all starve to death! Yep, seemed like a logical progression of events to Roni. So, best not to step on any tails.

The poor little girl, usually prone to skittering, walked very slowly and carefully as she moved back toward the Weyr. On her shoulder, her green firelizard, a tiny thing as well, likely recently hatched, made small encouraging little thrums a person cheerleader for this momentous task.

A'ram was dozing against Rath's side. Rath was also dozing, but not as heavily as his rider. He opened blue eyes and looked at the young girl who was making her way carefully through the dragons who were employed in much the same way Rath was. That is, taking in the sunlight. He watched her progress with interest and used the tip of his tail to nudge his rider awake.

That girl there, he said, showing A'ram his mental image of Roni. I'd like to talk to her. She seems nervous. Was she at the hatching?

I don't remember, A'ram replied. I wasn't watching the female candidates.

In truth, he'd barely been able to see individual candidates from his vantage point in the stands. Old eyes and all that. Rath rumbled his acceptance of that answer. He knew that his rider didn't care too much about what females did anyway. By and large, Rath didn't either, but he was at least a little curious.

Say hello to her for me?

A'ram finally opened his eyes and looked around for the girl Rath had shown him. It wasn't difficult to find her, and when he did he climbed to his feet and walked over. He didn't like to shout or yell to attract attention.

"I'm A'ram, rider of brown Rath," he said, introducing himself. "My dragon asked me to say hello to you. I think he'd like to talk to you. Would you mind coming back with me?"

One of the things A'ram had grown accustomed to over the years was acting as Rath's mouthpiece. His brown would speak to members of the family, but he was too proper and traditional to address anyone outside the family directly. A'ram didn't always appreciate being made to go out of his way to talk to people that didn't interest him, but he loved his dragon and wouldn't begrudge him conversation if he wished it.

If Roni were a dog she'd be whining and exposing her throat. Everything about her posture from downcast eyes to shuffling feet said 'please don't kill me scary rider man, sir!'. Also, she appeared to be trying to tie her own fingers together, a task that seemed to take almost the whole of her visual attention. A'ram only got darting, brief glances upward as she focused on this oh-so-important task.

"S-sir?" She asked, bowing in a stiff, awkward manner that looked like it just might knock her over if she wasn't careful. "I--"

She what? Well, she didn't want to piss off a big scary brown dragon, that much she was clear on. Which meant she better go along with the rider or risk being devoured. No. Dragons didn't eat people. That was just something the weyrbrats had said to scare her. Fell had promised. Dragons were nice. They were heroes. She knew that. Which begged the question, why would one want to talk to her? Because she'd done something wrong, obviously.

Okay. So the dragon would just chew on her a bit.

No. Nice. Nice dragons.

Right. Darting her eyes upward then back down again, she shuffled forward a few stuttering steps. "Sure. I'll come. With you. If you want. I mean him. If he wants. I'll come. He isn't..."

Her words trailed off into a mumble and she had to try again, "He isn't mad at me, is he?" And married to that question, though not spoken was the equally important inquiry about whether or not A'ram himself was mad at her.

A'ram raised both bushy eyebrows at Roni's stuttered, awkward response. It probably didn't make him look any less fierce than he usually did, but if Roni had been familiar with him she might have taken some pride in having surprised him with her behavior. She might have been surprised herself to learn that her manner pleased him. He approved of showing respect in the presence of elders and betters, particularly in the case of women, and perhaps she was taking it a little too far, but generally he approved. Maybe less babbling.

What did you say to her? Rath asked when he finally began to pay attention to what was going on with A'ram. He had been content to wait for his rider to bring the girl over to him and take a seat before involving himself in the conversation, but it seemed A'ram had done something to terrify the girl.

I asked if she'd follow me because you wanted to talk to her. That's it, A'ram said. His mental tone was somewhere between defensive and disgusted.

If you say so... Rath replied hesitantly. He found it hard to believe anyone could be so uncomfortable without being given a cause. Tell her I'm not mad at her.

"Rath's not mad at you," A'ram said. His tone didn't quite match Rath's for reassurance, but the brown dragon didn't complain. His human was not a demonstrative man, and he liked that about him. He wouldn't change a single thing about his human.

"Why would you think he's mad at you? Have you given him any reason to be?" A'ram suspected that she was just a nervous creature and privately doubted whether that sort of temperament would make her well-suited to Impress, but that wasn't for him to say. The dragons chose as the would.

"S-sorry, sir. I didn't do anything. I don't think." She ducked her head and mumbled the response to her feet. If nothing else, studying the ground was a good way to avoid stepping on dragons, something she was still concerned about. Sensing her increasing nerves, Stain was cuddled as close to her as possible, nuzzling her neck and making little murmuring croons. "It's just. He's a dragon. I don't know why he'd want to talk to me. Unless. I messed up. Made him angry."

Her shoulders were slumped, her posture defensive, but getting that much of a thought out seemed to give her a bit of courage. At least, she managed to raise her eyes. "Sir? Can you tell him thank you? For talking? To me, I mean. I mean, to you, first. Not straight to me. Dragons don't do that, they said."

Nerves were making her babble and she knew it. Catching her lip between her teeth she did her best to shut up. It wouldn't do to make the rider made before she even got to really meet the dragon.

Somehow it didn't surprise A'ram to learn that the girl hadn't done anything. He wasn't a people person, and so his evaluations of others personalities were frequently off the mark and colored by his own personal biases, but he didn't think this girl was the sort to go about offending dragons. He wasn't sure how anyone could be offended by someone so apologetic. Unless it was an act and she was actually mocking him and his dragon, but that thought didn't even come to his mind. He lacked the creativity and sense of humor to conceive of such an idea, and so could not imagine that others might.

She did nothing. Reassure her, Rath urged. I didn't mean to frighten her.

"Rath says you've done nothing to make him angry, and he didn't mean to frighten you," A'ram said dutifully as he eased into the seat he'd occupied before his dragon prompted him to get up and fetch the girl.

Actually, he wasn't sure why Rath wanted to talk to the girl, either, and so he couldn't answer that for himself, but he waited patiently for Rath to come up with an answer. Sometimes Rath took a while to form responses to unanticipated questions. A'ram didn't mind, and very rarely tried to rush his dragon's thought process. It just tended to make for long silences on the human end that most people preferred to fill. A'ram rarely felt a need to do so.

"I can tell him," A'ram said, skipping ahead a little to give his dragon more time to think. "But it's not necessary. If you say it aloud, he knows. However, no thanks are necessary."

Rath was still thinking, and so A'ram decided to respond to the girl's supposition that dragons don't talk to people who aren't their riders. "Most dragons don't. Some will, but it's uncommon, and I think it bespeaks a lack of manners on the dragon's part."

At last Rath formulated a response for why he wanted to talk with the girl. She was walking carefully, and seemed like a considerate person. I like to meet good people.

"Rath wanted to speak with you because you seem like a considerate person and he likes to meet good people."

Ask her about the firelizard.

"What is your firelizard's name?" A'ram didn't approve of firelizards.

Browns were such big dragons! As, for that matter, were golds, bronzes, blues and greens. Even the little hatchlings at the last hatching had been uncomfortably on the large side for poor Roni's taste. She was more comfortable with firelizards, hand sized and not intelligent to realize how many mistakes she was making. Like poor Stain, who was crooning to her even now as she stared and stumbled.

"He's. That is, you're very handsome, sir." Roni murmured, clearly addressing dragon instead of rider. She was prepared to call them both 'sir'. As far as she was concerned, Rath outranked her by a rather considerable amount. And, if the rider said she should address Rath directly, that was what she was going to do. She was good at listening to directions! At least, she tried to be. Sometimes Fell gave directions like 'relax' and those were a bit harder.

"I. Well. I try, sir. To be good. It's sorta new. I never used to have to be anything," she seemed surprisingly willing to address Rath directly, perhaps because on some level she found a presence that did not speak to her directly less threatening. "I'm glad. That you're not mad. I try hard. Not to make people mad."

The question about Stain seemed to surprise her. Her eyes went wide and her gaze jumped from her feet to the firelizard on her shoulder. Stain churred, but stuck to her owner like glue, however curious she might be about the giant brown. "This is, well, she's Stain. I found her. Her egg. She's still little. But. She's good. I want her to be good. With manners."

I think, A'ram said to his dragon, that you are intimidating her.

I don't mean to. Thank her for me, and I will try to look less intimidating. Rath wasn't sure what about him was intimidating. He couldn't remember, but he didn't think A'ram's family had ever found him so, and he certainly didn't try to intimidate people. That sort of posturing was for dragons with more ego than sense. It was far more important that work be done and correctly than that one person received more recognition and praise. He thought of intimidation as an attention-getting measure.

"Thank you," A'ram said, speaking for Rath as though the dragon was addressing her directly, rather than speaking through him. He anticipated that he would have little to nothing to contribute to this conversation, and so it was more than safe for him to convey his dragon's words like this. She seemed to have grasped that speaking directly to Rath was more appropriate without having to be told too explicitly, and also to accept that A'ram would be the one making the dragon's replies.

"I can't imagine what you would do to make people mad. You seem like a very polite young lady. Politeness is a very good trait for a lady to possess," A'ram said for his dragon.

He didn't look at Stain. Personally, he wasn't interested in firelizards. He hadn't known Rath had any interest in them either.

I am curious. I think your grandson had one that is now with your granddaughter. They are not terrific nuisances, Rath told his human. And since I can't make them go away, it seems I must learn to accept their presence.

"Did she name herself like a dragon, or did you name her?" A'ram knew the answer to that, actually, but before he realized he knew it he'd already asked it on Rath's behalf. "And it is good that you are trying to teach her manners. Without training, those creatures can become horrible pests."

"Oh!" Roni blushed a bit, taking a few shuffling steps backward before returning to her original position. She'd moved her hands, holding them clasped behind her back, her posture very straight. She'd never gotten a compliment from a dragon before! In truth, she didn't get many compliments. Her father loved her very much, and because of this, was very strict with her. Her brother was the same way. As to other people, well, until the Weyr, there really hadn't been any other people. "Thank you. I. Well, it's important. To be polite. Me and Stain both. Who I named. She didn't have one. Or. Didn't tell me. Maybe she has a firelizard name."

Another little shuffle. "It's not a very good name. Her brother though. He's Rain. They match."

She reached up to stroke the little green, who churred at the touch and rubbed her tiny head against Roni's outstretched fingers. "I. Well. She's special. Because, I got her here. I'll always remember. Being here. Because I'll have her. To remind me."

"You were brought up to be well-mannered, then?" A'ram asked, speaking for himself but allowing it to seem as though he still spoke for his dragon. Anyone who knew Rath would know that the brown would not be interested in knowing that sort of thing, but very few people knew Rath that well. "Was that here, at High Reaches, or elsewhere?"

A'ram held no prejudice against people who were Searched. After all, that was how he had ended up at High Reaches and with Rath. He was not a hypocrite in that respect. He did believe, however, that family and upbringing had much to do with Impression, which was why he'd worked so hard with his son and then his grandson to mold them into ideal riders. That Musil had failed to Impress had forever marked him as a disappointment to A'ram. It was good that B'shir had Impressed, though. And a bronze at that!

If the 'lizard answers to it, there is nothing wrong with the name. It is not offensive. Tell her that, Rath instructed A'ram, who complied, repeating the dragon's message word for word.

"Is your brother a candidate?" A'ram asked on behalf of himself and Rath. He was always more interested in male candidates than female ones. He didn't feel that women belonged on fighting dragons. Their place was in the home, with the family, where they could be kept safe.

I don't think she's weyrfolk, Rath mused. Not with what she's been saying. But it is interesting that both she and her brother would have been Searched.

Family is important, A'ram replied simply and with conviction.
