(This is the introduction,I hope you like it.)
A full moon shone brightly overhead, painting the landscape a bright blueish white color.Dark forest trees surrounded a wide open feild. A lone figure stood, his long flaming red hair, bleached a bright blue in the moonlight, blowing gently in the cool summer breeze. His sharp emerald green eyes scanned the vast landscape before him,his eyes catching the smallest of movements. He caught the movement a small ant crawling through the grass to a large fox stalking silently through the woods, looking for prey. The swords sheath on his back quivered slightly with the prospect of danger thick in the air and he inhaled the stuffy air,the hair on the back of his neck prickling uneasily. The wind ruffled his blood red kimono as his arms stayed crossed firmly across his chest. A soft tap on his shoulder made him turn and his eyes connected with the soft brown ones of a tall, pitite women. Her hair was as black as the night sky and her kimono of a simple white matiral. "Makkusu are you alright? You took off as soon as you named Aren. She said, looking up with worried eyes at him as she cupped his cheek. Makkusu nodded and leaned gently in to her hand, covering it with his own,"Yes Erizabesu, I'm sorry if I worried you.I fear that Kyaserin will not forgive me however.Even though I have apologized many a time for breaking the marriage agreement and her heart, she has not forgiven me and I fear that will cause an unnessesary war between our families."Erizabesu hugged him,"I'm sorry if I have caused this to happen."She whispered as Makkusu hugged her back,"No my love,it was not you,not at all." A sudden disturbence in the bushes behind them made Makkusu look up. A tall male with piercing blue eyes and dark mud brown hair stepped out of the shadows, bowing,"Makkusu,Ms.Kyaserin has declared war on our family, saying her family will not rest until our's has paid for our mistake." Makkusu nodded gravely at his cousin,"Please go warn the family for me,will you Arekkusu?" Arekkusu nodded and disappeared back in to the bushes. Makkusu held Erizabesu closer as she shook,"Don't worry my love, things will turn around.I shall make a prediction:In 500 years time, our great-granddaughter,the first born child of the current leader of the Animal Swords Clan, shall fall in love with, and marry Kyaserin's great-great-nephew. The two will stop this fighting, finally connecting our families by marriage."He said as he looked at the horizion as the first rays of the sun peeked out at the family, declaring a new era in time.

This is a really good start, Scarletleaf. I really like how you set up the background and foreshadowing for the story to come. It definitely makes me want to read more. 3nodding I just have two suggestions, though. arrow I would remove the names in parenthesis. Putting things in parenthesis... it's like as the author, you're winking at the reader from the background. It's kind of distracting. It's best to keep those kinds of small explanations out, and leave it up to the reader to pronounce the names as they see fit. arrow I would also be careful of long sentences. Long, run-on sentences can also be slightly distracting. It's best to keep sentences no longer than fifteen words, if you can easily manage that. Break up longer sentences by dividing them into two, or cutting out unecessary details. heart A great start, though. Keep it up!

(500 years later) Chapter 1 Their First Meeting!
It was a bright, sunny late summer’s day. The sun shone down over a tall grassy hill, a large stone castle built at it's cresent. A young 5-year-old quarter cheetah, and quarter wolf half demon girl with long bright flaming red hair and bright emerald green eyes skipped outside in to her family's garden. She picked flowers, humming softly to herself. Her light blue, pink cherry blossom patterned kimono glowed softly in the bright sunlight filtering through the thick, green leaves overhead. As the young girl skipped past her mother, who was carrying a basket full of fresh picked oranges, she heard her say, "Sukaaretto, don't leave the garden." Sukaaretto nodded once before continuing deeper in to the large garden, picking flowers as she went. Finally she came to a small, hidden part of the garden where her great-grandparents, Makkusu and Erizabesu, lay resting peacefully after long hard life’s of war, and hardship. The small grave was surrounded by thick green bushes, and a small pond lay behind it, reflecting the bright blue sky overhead. Placing her handful of flowers respectfully on the grave, Sukaaretto quickly prayed for her grandparents before slipping back off towards the castle. On her way back she spotted a beautiful red rose that clashed beautifully with her long flaming hair, and picked it, placing it behind her left ear after removing the thorns. Smiling at the new trinket Sukaaretto saw a flash of bright color out of the corner of her eye, and turned to find a bright sunshine colored butterfly perched on a sunflower, lazily opening and closing it wings. Grinning evilly, the young half demon crouched down until her stomach lightly brushed the ground, and slowly stalked towards the unsuspecting insect. Sukaaretto's long red wolf tail softly swished back and forth, and her cheetah ears flattened back against her hair. Tightening her muscles in preparation to spring, she leaned back on her hunches before launching herself forward, towards the butterfly. In the next instant, she found herself laying facedown on the ground, the sunflowers crushed below her. Sitting up and shaking the sunflower petals from her hair, Sukaaretto looked around for the butterfly and found it floating above her head in a kind of teasing way. Growling under her breath, Sukaaretto muttered, “I will not be out done.” Before she jumped up and tried to get the butterfly, but the beautiful insect fluttered out of her reach, and drifted away through the garden, beckoning the young girl to follow it. Sukaaretto didn't even give it a second thought before she leaped after her prey, making swipes at it with her claws. The young half demon followed the butterfly through the tall grassy field just outside the garden wall, and towards the dark, menacing forest, leading her down a long narrow path slightly overgrown with tree roots and small bushes. Sukaaretto didn't even notice when she exited the forest, and in to another, unknown tall grassed field. Leaping on to a tall rock poking out of the tall grass she sprang one last time at the butterfly, and landed, not on the ground, but on a person. The person beneath her groaned softly, and Sukaaretto jumped off the person quickly, looking down to find a tall 7-year-old full demon male with long shoulder length bright yellow hair, and bright sky blue eyes, dressed in a dark turtle green fighting kimono laying on his back on the ground. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there." Sukaaretto said as she helped the young boy up in to a sitting position. The boy rubbed his head as he said, “It’s alright, and I heal fast. My name's Arekusandaa Osutin. What's yours?" Sukaaretto smiled as she said, "Jonson Sukaaretto." Osutin nodded as he replied, “It’s nice to meet you Sukaaretto. Uh, do you want to...play? “He finished as a deep blood red blush colored in his tanned cheeks. She laughed as she said, "Yeah, let's play..."She stepped closer to Osutin, poked his forehead, and finished, "Tag, you're it Osutin." Before she turned and took off back in to the tall grass, laughing. Behind her Sukaaretto heard her new playmate laugh too as he said, “No fair, you got a head start.” Then she heard his pursuit. Laughing, she shouted behind her, "Catch me if you can.” She took off faster. Arriving at the rock she had been at only moments before Sukaaretto climbed to the peak, and crouched down, waiting for Osutin to appear. But he never did. Standing up she looked around for him, and jumped when a voice behind her shouted, "BONZI!" Before she was bowled over from behind, and she and her attacker tumbled over the rock's ledge, and on to the soft grass below. Sukaaretto laughed as she lay across Osutin's heaving chest as he laughed too. She didn’t notice that her rose had fallen out of her hair. Suddenly a dark shadow flashed out of the corner of Sukaaretto's eyes, and she stopped laughing, the hair on the back of her neck bristling uneasily. Osutin sensed her fear, and his laugher cut off to as he sat up, and asked, "Sukaaretto, are you alright?" But before she could answer a loud snarl ripped through the silent air, and Sukaaretto whimpered, trembling in Osutin's warm arms. Osutin moved his new friend behind him, and stood in front of her in a protective stance, his bright blue eyes showing no fear Tugging on his kimono sleeve Sukaaretto whispered, "Osutin, save yourself. Don't argue, I’ll be fine; I need to go home anyway. “The blond boy sighed as he said, “Goodbye Sukaaretto." As Oustin turned away, he spotted the small bit of red, and picked up the rose. Sukaaretto’s scent still clung to small flower and he wanted to return it to his friend, but if he turned around, he wouldn’t be forgiven. Sukaaretto nodded as she slipped out from behind Osutin, and slinked towards the tall grass, but before she reached the grass another loud snarl ripped through the air, and in the blink of an eye she found herself beneath a large black wolf. Coal black lips were peeled back from razor sharp teeth, and bleak, evil eyes stared down at her, a look of pure hatred burning in their black depths. Thinking fast, Sukaaretto grabbed a handful of the dirt beneath her, and taking aim, she threw it up and in to the wolf's eye. The wolf howled in pain, and stumbled back, shaking it's massive head back and forth, and using it's front paw to try and get the dirt out of it's eyes. Scrambling up, she stumbled through the tall grass, and back out in to the forest, running as fast as she could with her short legs. But the wolf was faster. As Sukaaretto stumbled past the tree line, the wolf overtook her, and swinging it's large paw it hit her, making her fall back and hit a nearby tree trunk. Trying to sit up, and refocus her vision, since the tree almost knocked her out, Sukaaretto felt the wolf sink it's teeth in to her arm, and start tearing, making her scream out in pain. It felt like she was being torn a part by dozens of small daggers, preheated in an oven until they were scorching. Suddenly, the tearing stopped, and she sagged back against the tree, not able to feel her arm. Refocusing her vision, Sukaaretto looked down at her arm, and saw that most of the flesh had been torn off, and was bleeding like a small waterfall. Managing to sit up she tried to stop the bleeding by covering the wound, but it just kept bleeding. Osutin rushed over and plopping down next to Sukaaretto he tried to help her stop the bleeding, but a gruff voice stopped him as it said, “No Osutin, do not waste your energy on such filth." Osutin looked down sadly as he mumbled, “Yes father.” He stood quickly, shooting his friend an apologetic glance, and then walked over to stand beside a tall dark brown haired man with black bottomless eyes. The black wolf was nowhere to be seen, and Sukaaretto looked around to find the wolf that had saved her, but there was no other wolf, just Osutin, his father, and now Sukaaretto's father, Shoon Johnson, his light blue eyes shining with concern for his daughter. Scooping her up in his arms he cradled her gently against his chest as if trying to protect her. Nuzzling in to the crook of her father's neck Sukaaretto whispered, “I’m sorry papa." Shoon gently shushed the girl as he whispered back, “It’s alright Sukaaretto, you're safe now.” Shoon turned back to Osutin's father when he growled out, “Jonson!" His eyes narrowed as he spat, “Next time, keep your spawn off my territory, or I won't hesitate to kill her." Shoon sighed as he said, "Jeddo can you not just let go of the past, and forgive and forget? Can you not just resolve matters peacefully rather than just mindlessly using violence to prove your point?" Jeddo snarled, baring his teeth as he said, “Listen Jonson, don't preach to me how to solve my problems. Especially after what your backstabbing grandfather did to my great-aunt Kyasarin. At least she died with honor, trying to rid this earth of you weak, pathetic excuses for demons." Shoon's eye brows frowned as he said; “Now Jeddo, I am just as important to this world as you are. Just because I am only half demon, does not mean that I am not the same as you, if not in one way, then in another....."But Jeddo only snarled louder as he bit out between clenched teeth, “DO NOT CONSIDER YOURSELF IN THE SAME RANK AS ME HALF BREED! You are just a weak half demon who does not deserve to have strong demon blood flow through your veins. And it was your own grandfather’s fault. If he had stuck to his marriage agreement like he should have, there wouldn't be this problem. If he left rich untainted demon blood like it was designed to be, then he wouldn't have created you weak, useless half breeds. So it's your own family's fault for what has happened! And my family will stop at nothing until your whole family is dead." Shoon sighed as his eyes softened and said, “Well Jeddo I can not control what you think and how you feel, so I am afraid I will have to drop this matter for now. But one day I hope that you can let go of this hatred and we can be friends like we had once tried to be, and perhaps on that day, our children will be able to play in peace. Goodbye, old friend.” Then he turned and walked away from the fuming full demon, power walking down the path, a sad look in his light blue eyes. Sukaaretto looked over her father's shoulder to glimpse once more at her playmate. Osutin, looking sad and remorseful, spotted her looking down at him, her eyes filled with silent tears, and he waved at her as Sukaaretto and her father disappeared around a bend in the road ahead. Sukaaretto leaned her head against her father’s chest as he carried her home, cradling her wounded arm as she thought. Finally, she looked up at her father as she asked, "Papa, why can't I play with Osutin, he and I seemed to play together fine." Shoon sighed as he replied, “Well Sukaaretto that I can not tell you until you are old enough to understand, for you see there is something between our two clans that is even deeper than you can ever imagine. But I am hopeful that Jeddo will one day forget this whole ordeal, then maybe on that day you and Osutin can play again. For now let me just tell you this: Something in the past has caused our clans to despise one another, and only one person from each of these clans can help solve this problem. Now, that's enough talking for today, it’s time for bed.” He finished as he stepped out of the shadowy forest, and in to the blazing sunlight eliminating everything with it's bright glow. The sky overhead was ablaze with light, and the river down the tall hill glowed brightly as though someone had lit a fire beneath it's depths. Sukaaretto leaned her head against her fathers chest again as she said, “Thank you for saving me papa, and I am sorry." Shoon once again shushed her as he whispered, “Do not blame yourself Sukaaretto, but next time, please be more observant of your surroundings so that you don't get hurt by Jeddo again. Now sleep my daughter, tomorrow is a big day. Tomorrow you begin your training, but it will only be minor, for you are still little, and you need not be pushed too hard.” Was the last thing Sukaaretto remembered before she drifted into a comfortable sleep, the gentle motion of her father's walking that of a softly rocking allayed. Small emerald green eyes fluttered open to the cool darkness of a large red room. The soft red comforter was tucked securely around a small body, and the red pillows crinkled slightly when a small head lay upon them. Dark red drapes glowed brightly over the large glass windows as they blocked the bright sunlight from entering the cool security of the large room. The young girl sat up quickly, and swinging her feet over the side of the bed, she landed on the soft carpet, shuffling towards the curtains. She passed a large, red cushioned couch, standing next to a large mirror, where a lone silver brush lay upon the soft brown wood of the tall beau that held up the mirror. Reaching the drapes, the young girl opened them to reveal a tall set of glass doors, leading out on to a large white stoned balcony overlooking the huge garden below, and looking over the tall garden wall, out towards the tall dark trees of the forest set back behind the large grassy field. Smiling, the girl woke up instantly, and turning, she ran towards the tall double oak doors on the other side of the room. Opening them, she slipped quietly out in to the brightly lit hallway, softly closing her bedroom doors behind her. Suddenly, there was a loud shout of, "SUKAARETTO!" Before she was bowled over from behind, and tumbled on to the floor, someone on top of her. Laughing, Sukaaretto rolled over quickly, and pinned her younger cousin Ze to the floor in a matter of seconds. Ze looked up at her with wide eyes and she laughed again as she said, “I can still pin your butt Ze, no matter what." He stuck his tongue out at Sukaaretto as he said, “So what, I’m still faster than you.” Sitting up after his cousin had released him he pouted, and whined, “Why do you and Arekkusu (Alex) get to begin your training, it’s not fair, now I'll have no one to play with." There was a laugh behind the two as a voice said, "Come now Ze, you know you have to be at least 5 to be able to start training. Besides, Sukaaretto and I will still be able to play with you, just not as often. Besides, you still have at least another month until you begin your own training.” The two turned to find their older cousin Arekkusu walking towards them, a smile on his face. He stopped next to the pouting Ze and the laughing Sukaaretto as he said, "Sukaaretto, Uncle Shoon would like to see you in his office. He says he would like to begin your training now." She nodded and standing up, she dusted herself off, and bidding Ze goodbye she followed Arekkusu down the hall, and they both turned left down the main hallway. Stopping next to the second tall wooden door on the right, Arekkusu softly knocked twice, before stepping back and waiting. "Who is it? Sukaaretto, Arekkusu? Right, come in.” Came Shoon's answering voice, and Arekkusu opened the door, politely holding it for Sukaaretto before walking inside himself. The two looked around for Shoon, but he was nowhere to be found. Suddenly above them, they heard him say, "Ah, thank you for retrieving my daughter for me Arekkusu, this I much appreciative" The two cousins looked up, confused, and spotted Shoon floating near the top most shelf, a large stack of book in one hand, while the other was slowly putting the books back in their places. When he was done, Shoon floated back down to the floor, a grin on his face, and his blue eyes twinkling with excitement. "Wow Papa, can you teach me that?" Sukaaretto asked excitedly as she rushed over to her father. Shoon chuckled, placed a hand on his daughters head, and ruffling it he replied, “Sorry sweetheart, but you're still too young to fully begin to activate your powers. Maybe when you're older, alright?" Sukaaretto shuffled her feet, and pouted as she said, "Alright." Shoon chuckled again and turning to Arekkusu, he thanked his nephew again and handed him a pass for his next class. Arekkusu thanked Shoon, bowed respectfully, and turned to leave, whispering a soft, “Good luck," to Sukaaretto as he passed and disappeared out the study door, softly closing it behind him. Shoon motioned to his daughter with his hand to follow and she walked behind him over to a large wooden deck near the large brick fireplace. Sitting in the large cushioned chair across from her father, Sukaaretto watched as he crouched down behind his desk and came back up, a large leather bound book with the Jonson family chest on the cover, in his hands. Clearing his throat, Shoon helped Sukaaretto put one hand on the book and one on her heart as he said in a commanding voice, "Sukaaretto Jonson,do you promise to help protect and defend our clan, The Animal Swords Clan, with your life?” Clearing her throat, she sat straighter and said in a loud clear voice, "I, Jonson Sukaaretto, promise to do my part in protecting and defending our clan, The Animal Swords Clan." Shoon nodded and bowing his head, he whispered to the leather book, "Oh great ancestors, may you rest in peace, please watch over this young warrior and help her through her trainings whilst she grows and becomes stronger.” Then Shoon looked back up, smiled and said to his daughter, "Alright now Sukaaretto, come over here with me, let us begin your training.” Putting the book away again, Shoon led Sukaaretto over to an empty part of the office. "Alright Sukaaretto, now show me your best fighting stance." Shoon said as he turned to face his daughter. The young girl nodded and got in to her best fighting stance, her legs spread wide and her arms positioned out in front on her. Shoon slowly circled Sukaaretto, looking at her stance to find any weaknesses. "Hm." Shoon said as he finished looking at the stance, “Quite good Sukaaretto, except for one flaw." Sukaaretto cocked her head to the side as she said, “What’s that papa?” In a flash, the young girl found herself on her back on the office floor, her father standing over her, a joking grin on his face, “Well Sukaaretto, your feet aren't planted firmly enough, you have to make it harder for your opponent to hit you in the leg and knock you down. Here, go more like this." Shoon helped her up and put Sukaaretto in a different stance, one where her left foot was more forward and her right was slightly back. Her arms were held out the same way her legs were, her long fingers pointing towards the ceiling. "Good, now let me show you how and where to hit your opponent to hurt them the most." Shoon said as he and Sukaaretto continued with the lesson. "Phew, well done Sukaaretto, well done. Great first day of training, you’re doing great. Alright, your lesson is over, you may go and play now." Shoon finished as he ruffled his daughter’s head happily and laughed. Sukaaretto bowed respectfully to her father/teacher, thanked him for the great day of training and departed down the hallway. As the young girl skipped happily towards the staircase she felt, somewhere in the pit of her stomach, that after today, her life would change rapidly.

Chapter 2
Training Family of the Animal Swords Clan!
The sky over head was a light blue, with no clouds in sight and the sun shining directly overhead. Tall stone pillars bordered the edges of the forest, connected to a large stony floor where two figures trained, often groans of pain going up in to the air when one of them up tanned an injury. One figure attacked the other continuously, knocking them down with heavy blows. The figure just stood still and took the hits, falling back on to the ground after each blow with a quiet "oof."
"Again Sukaaretto, again. Remember, you have to pull most of the strength from your body and push it in to the ground. Do you want your opponent to easily knock you down?” Aunt Vaioreto said as Sukaaretto lay on the ground at her feet, breathing heavily. Sukaaretto got shakily to her feet and faced her aunt, in her fighting stance, ready incase she needed to attack. Trying to pull together a great amount of her strength and push it in to the ground, Sukaaretto clenched her teeth and tried to focus. But when Aunt Vaioreto attacked her with a heavy blow to the underside of her knee, the young girl fell easily to the stony floor, her cheek scraping slightly on the hard gray texture.
Getting back to her feet with the aid of her aunt Sukaaretto asked, “Aunt Vaioreto, can you please show me again? I don't think I can do this unless you show me.” Her aunt nodded and stepping a few feet away, she got in to her fighting stance, and closed her eyes for a few seconds. A shining light from within Vaioreto half blinded Sukaaretto, but she forced herself to watch as a bright white sphere glowed within her aunts body and gradually began to slowly float downwards, towards the stony ground, until it was half buried in the ground but still half within Vaioreto feet. When Vaipreto's eyes reopened, the bright light vanished and she beckoned Sukaaretto to attack her with a small movement of her hand. Sukaaretto looked her aunt over carefully, to find a weak spot upon which she had a dim chance of a perfect strike. Her aunt's long bright orange hair flowed freely in the wind, glowing brightly when the sun hit it just right, and her large round shaped bear ears flicked slightly in the slight breeze. Her sparkling blue eyes were tight, guarded, so as not to give away any weakness, her long tanned face etched in a big frown, not a trace of emotion playing along its tanned planes, like the flat surface of a lake, completely smooth. On her back was perched the sheath of her sword the Black Bear Sword. She was nicknamed, the Protective Mama Bear.
Vaipreto's cloud white fighting kimono hugged her tight curves, showing the great amount of muscle that came from a great many years of training as a young girl, making Vaioreto look as though she was the large bear demon that she was. Her simple brown wood sandals fit her feet perfectly, moving easily with a simple flick of her foot. Her body did not betray any kind of weakness, and Sukaaretto knew she would just have to attack head on, and she would just have to see how she would succeed. She flew at her aunt, her claws posed to strike. But when Sukaaretto struck, Vaioreto didn't move an inch, as if her niece's attack was a mere butterfly landing on her unmoving body.
As Sukaaretto leaped away in midair, she felt her aunt grab tightly on to her right wrist and throw her in to one of the large stone pillars. Shaking the fallen dust from her long flaming hair, she looked up in to her aunt's kind eyes as she took the outstretched hand presented to her in aid to help her up. Shaking the dust from the rest of her body, Sukaaretto smiled at her aunt as she said, “Wow aunt Vaioreto, that was a strong throw, thank goodness I have such a hard head otherwise it would have cracked open. Ahem, thank you for the excellent training session Vaipreto-senpei, I will be here in two days, ready to begin training again.” The young half demon bowed respectfully to her aunt/teacher before she was excused to her next class, leaping down the large marble staircase leading back towards the castle. Tall trees surrounded the large staircase, and all around her, Sukaaretto heard the happy chirping of birds as the young begged to be feed, and the parents hurried back and forth, carrying food in their beaks.
Sukaaretto smiled as she leaped easily past the trees, her feet hitting ground. Opening the back door, the young girl was greeted by her arguing uncle Samu and father, Shoon, who were bickering about some odd thing. Rolling her eyes at their funny behavior, Sukaaretto closed the door behind her and watched the two bickering adults, waiting for them to notice she was there. Uncle Samu was a tall, muscular man with long, shoulder length orange flame colored hair, and bright intense blue eyes that, when he looked at you, it was as though he was searching around in your soul. He was a half fox half demon with fox ears perched on his head and a bushy fox tail. Samu was a master of surprise attacks. He was the cook of the whole family, and when an enemy attacked, Samu would just appear to be a harmless chief, with no attack skills, or stealth. So naturally, the enemy would not even bother to attack him, but they won't expect an attack, which would ensue in either a sharp blade just barely missing their head, or a cutting board smashing in to the back of their head. Sukaaretto laughed to herself when she remembered that day when her uncle was servicing dinner, and he pulled out a hidden knife, throwing it at a fly that had just landed on the wall next to the fireplace. Everyone had clapped, and then the room had broken in to great fits of laughter when young 3-year-old Ze crawled up the wall, took the knives out, grabbed the fly, then ate it, his sharp spider pincers falling slightly past his small pink lips.
Smiling at the memory, Sukaaretto heard her father say, “No Samu, I simply will not force Sukaaretto to marry one of the Arekusandaa, even if it was grandfather's prediction, I've always told her she has her own voice, and that she can make her own choices....."
Without thinking, the young half demon stood up, and said, “I’ll do it to help the clan, papa." Shoon turned in his daughter’s direction, his eyes wide as he said, “No Sukaaretto, no, I cannot let you do this at the expanse of your happiness, even for the aid of the clan. And that is the end of this discussion. Have a good training lesson." Shoon bowed, then turned and left, softly closing the door behind him.
Sukaaretto looked sadly after her father before she turned towards her uncle and asked, "Uncle Samu-sensei, what was great-grandfather's prediction?" Samu only shook his head as he replied, "That, my niece, is something, I, a cook, cannot tell you since I am not accurate in our family's history. You will have to ask your aunt Mearii when you have her next period, for now; let's just start with our lessons today." Sukaaretto nodded, taking her seat at the middle island to begin her lesson with Samu. Sukaaretto, however, had to leap out of her seat a moment later when her uncle threw a hidden knife in her direction. Grabbing a pan, she threw it at her uncle, but he deflected it easily, and leaped away in to the shadows, disappearing. Sukaaretto felt around for his presence and leaped out of the way when Samu leaped back out at her, barley missing his nieces’ ear as she grabbed his arm and flung him over the middle island, staying in her fighting stance incase her uncle tried to attack again. A large piece of wood flew past her head and the young half demon cut it in half with her claws, then threw both pieces back at her uncle who caught both and threw them in to the fire.
“I’m impressed Sukaaretto, you’ve gotten faster since our last lesson. However,” Uncle Samu said as he disappeared, then reappeared again behind her, “you’ll have to be faster if you do not want your enemy to knock you down.” He finished as he gripped her around the neck and playfully started messing up her hair.
Laughing, Sukaaretto struggled against her uncle’s hold, “No uncle stop, please, don’t. What does this have to do with fighting the enemy?” Samu laughed as he replied, “Nothing Sukaaretto, I just wanted to teach you who the master of this kitchen is.” Grabbing his arm, she flipped her uncle over and smiled down at him as he lay on his back, looking up at her with an amused expression. He knocked feet out from under her, making Sukaaretto yelp in surprise and land on her back next to her uncle. They both laughed and getting back to their feet, the two faced each other, in their fighting stances, falling easily in to the routine of their lesson.
“Good job Sukaaretto, you did well today. It was better than your first lesson with me.” Uncle Samu said as he helped his niece to her feet and they bowed to each other respectfully.
“Thank you Samu-sensei. I will see you again in several days to continue our lesson. Have a good day uncle.” Sukaaretto bowed once more and turned to leave, softly closing the door behind her. Bumping accidently in to her cousin, Emirii Sukaaretto apologized and looked up at her. Emirii was two years older than Arekkusu, and she was a 35% lynx, 15% turtle half demon with long mid back dust brown hair and dark brown colored eyes. She had lynx ears that were nestled in her hair and a turtle tail like Arekkusu. Her kimono was a gentle aqua blue. Emirii was Arekkusu’s older sister and the oldest young half demon in the Animal Swords Clan. Her weapon was the Lynx Blade, a long, powerful sword, almost in the shape of the lynx tail.
Emirii smiled down at Sukaaretto, “Hey Sukaaretto, how are you today?” She asked politely, waving off her cousin’s apologizes.
Sukaaretto smiled back at her oldest cousin as she replied, “I’m great, and you Emirii?” She just nodded and said, “Same, well, have a good lesson.” She finished as she turned for the door to the kitchen and disappeared in side without another word. Sukaaretto looked after her cousin, then turned and leaped up the large stair case to the upper floor.
“Sukaaretto Leaf Jonson, what have I told you about leaping up and down those stairs?” Sukaaretto heard a voice say behind her, and she turned. Her mother, Penii Jonson stood at the foot of the stairs, looking up at her daughter with a scolding look. Penii was a tall, slender half demon cheetah female with long lower back length black, red stripped hair and dark brown eyes. She had a pair of cheetah ears on top of her head and a long cheetah tail hidden beneath her hair. Her kimono was a soft cloud white, black ribbon tied to the ends of each sleeve. Penii was the second in command of the clan, after her husband and Sukaaretto’s father, Shoon. She did not really have a weapon, but she was the one of the clan that tried to gather the younger children that did not know how to fight, and hid them away from the enemy, so they would not get hurt or in the way.
Sighing Sukaaretto looked back at her mother as Penii calmly walked up the stairs towards her, and said, “Hi mom.” Penii stopped at the top of the stairs as she said, "Sukaaretto you know you’re not supposed to jump up and down these stairs. You have to set a good example for the little ones, and it’s dangerous.” “Mom, I’m a half demon, I heal fast, don’t worry.” Sukaaretto argued, “Now if you’ll excuse me I have to get to my next lesson.” She finished turning away from her mother.
But Penii touched her daughter’s shoulder as she said, “Sukaaretto, you know I worry. Just please try to be more careful, alright?” She turned back to her mother with a warm smile as she replied, “I understand mom, don’t worry. I’m not that helpless little girl anymore, I can do fine on my own, I promise. I love you mom.” Sukaaretto finished, hugging her mother and kissing her forehead before taking off down the hallway.
Penii watched sadly after her daughter as she whispered, “They really do grow up too fast. Sometimes I wish we can just go back to when Sukaaretto was just a little baby. It was a lot more simple back then.” Sad, yet proud tears leaked down her cheeks as Penii turned and walked back down the staircase, disappearing quietly back in to the family library.
Sukaaretto slipped silently in to the large, carpeted classroom, softly closing the door behind her. The west wall was made up of window and large bookshelves lined the back walls. In the front of the room a large teacher’s desk sat in front of a blackboard, facing three desks placed in a row in the middle. Sukaaretto’s cousins Arekkusu and Ze sat at their desks on either side of the middle desk, arguing about something.
Arekkusu was a tall 25% turtle, 25% lynx half demon male with long shoulder length dust brown hair and lighter brown colored eyes. His kimono was a soft turtle green, and he did not really weld a sword, instead, he welds a bow and arrows. Arekkusu had two lynx ears perched a top his head and a short turtle tail. He also had sharp eyesight and he could hit a target from miles away. The family called him Eagle Eye. Arekkusu was one year Sukaaretto’s senior.
Ze was a slightly shorter 30% spider, 15% snake, and 5% leopard half demon with long shoulder length black hair and dark soul less looking eyes. His ears sat on the sides of his head, and he had no tail, but he had two extra arms. His kimono was as black as his hair. Ze was the sneaky one of the family; he used shadows to his advantage, spinning invisible spider webs to trap his enemies. His nickname was the Hidden Spider. Sukaaretto was only 6 months older than Ze.
Sitting down at the desk in between her two fighting cousins, Sukaaretto looked at them and asked, “What are you two fighting about?”
Arekkusu looked down at his cousin as he replied, “We’re arguing about what great-grand father’s prediction was...I say great-grandfather predicted that a member from our clan will fall in love with a member from the Samurai Swords Clan and they two will finally unite out families by marriage.”
Ze interrupted then, “Well I say we’ll finally beat those good for nothing Arekusandaas and we’ll finally get some respect. What do you think Sukaaretto?” Ze asked, turning his questioning gaze on his cousin.
“Hm, I’m going with Arekkusu’s guess on this. I heard papa and uncle Samu arguing about it when I arrived for my lesson. Papa said something about not wanting me to marry one of the Arekusandaas and that I had my own voice. I said I’d do it for the clan, but papa said he didn’t want to risk my happiness just to help the clan.” Sukaaretto answered, twiddling her thumbs.
“Hello Sukaaretto, Arekkusu, Ze, it’s good to see you again.” Aunt Mearii said, coming in to the classroom with her bag, and setting it down next to her desk. “Now, today we will be discussing an important matter. Can anyone give me a guess as to what that is? Yes, Sukaaretto?” Aunt Mearii said, nodding her head in her niece’s direction for her to answer. Aunt Mearii was a tall half cougar with black as night hair and sparkling light brown eyes. On her head sat two cougar ears and she had a long black cougar’s tail. Her kimono was a beautiful peach color, and her sword was the Catfish Sword; a long bladed sword that could control the easy cycle of the water, just like the moon.
“Are we talking about great- grandfather’s prediction today?” She asked, looking up at her aunt with a questioning gaze. Aunt Mearii looked taken a back a bit and she dropped the piece of chalk she had been holding on the floor. “Y-yes, we will be discussing grandfathers prediction,” She said, stooping down and picking up the fallen piece of chalk, “Now, can anyone tell me how the war between our clan and the Samurai Swords Clan first begun?” She finished turning and writing Grandfather’s Prediction on the blackboard.
“Wasn’t it the broken marriage agreement between Great-grandfather Makkusu and Ms. Kyasarin that started the war Mearii-sensei?” Arekkusu asked. Their aunt nodded and said, “Please take out your notebooks a brush and ink, you will need to take a few notes on this. Now, Makkusu’s parents had arranged a marriage between him and Ms. Kyasarin. But he met grandmother Erizabesu and the two fell in love with each other. Makkusu went to go break the news to his parents, and then go tell Kyasarin that he was sorry, but he couldn’t marry her. Makkusu’s parents were somehow reluctant at first, but gradually grew to accept that their son with in love with the woman and they allowed him to marry Erizabesu.”
“Kyasarin was heartbroken. She had been in love with Makkusu, and she could never forgive him for what he had done. Oh she fell in love and married someone else, but the wounds in her heart had not completely healed, and she was bent on revenge. Although Makkusu apologized many times, sending Kyasarin letters of friendship and trying to make amends, Kyasarin never forgave him, and she declared war on our family. She said that she and her family would stop at nothing until they defeat us, and take back the pride that had been taken away from them. The very day that Kyasarin declared war, grandfather Makkusu predicted that in 500 years time, his great-granddaughter, first child born of the current leader, would fall in love with Kyasarin’s first born great-great nephew, and the two would finally unite our families by marriage.” Aunt Mearii finished, turning her gaze on Sukaaretto.
Sukaaretto was speechless, but she managed to choke out, “I-I’m the one that…? I’m the one from great-grandfathers prediction.” The room grew silent, only broken by the soft breathing of all four half demons in the room. No one knew what to say, even though Sukaaretto kept opening and closing her mouth, not a word was uttered.
“SUKAARETTO WILL NOT MARRY ONE OF THOSE STUPID, LYING AREKUSANDAAS!” Ze suddenly yelled out in protest, leaping to his feet, and slamming his hands down on the desk top. Arekkusu, Sukaaretto, and Mearii jumped at the sudden outburst and turned to watch Ze as he paced angrily back and forth, ranting on about the Arekusandaas. “I mean what would be the point of Sukaaretto marrying him; he’d just turn around and kill her first chance he got, then where would we be?” Ze ranted angrily while Arekkusu tried to calm him down.
Sukaaretto stood up and stopped Ze as she said calmly, “Ze, calm down, I know you don’t like it but if that is what I have to do, if that is my duty, then I will do it. You can not stop destiny Ze, no one can, it just keeps moving forward on its’ own, it just depends on the choices you make it get to that point in time.” Ze just looked at his cousin as if she had gone crazy as he tried to argue back, “B-but Sukaaretto… You can’t marry one of them.”
Sukaaretto sighed and said, “I may have to. Aunt Mearii, can we just continue with the lesson, please?” She finished, turning to look at her aunt. Aunt Mearii looked calmly at her niece as she nodded, and Ze sat back down. The lesson continued much like any other day, and in her heart, Sukaaretto felt that somewhere in the future, she had to deal with the burden of her great-grandfather’s prediction.
***
“Alright class, I’ll see you next week.” Aunt Mearii said, dismissing the class for the day. Arekkusu, Ze, and Sukaaretto bowed to their teacher, thanked her, then left to go down to the dining room for lunch. Ze was still angry, thinking about the prediction, and he kept shooting glances at Sukaaretto as he thought, (Sukaaretto will never marry one of those stupid……). Sukaaretto could sense her cousin’s anger and turning to him, she asked, “Ze, is something the matter?” Ze shook his head and stalked off down the hall.
“Oh, don’t worry about Ze, his mood’ll pass. It’s his favorite lunch today, so that’ll make him forget about the prediction.” Arekkusu said, smiling. Sukaaretto nodded and the two cousins fell in to a comfortable silence as they continued down the hall.
“NOOOOOOOOO! LOOK OUT SHE’S BACK, SHE WANTS THE SHINY THING!” Ze shouted, and some doors slammed open and closed as the rest of the family rushed out to see what the commotion was. Sukaaretto and Arekkusu’s heads snapped up and they looked at Ze as he sped back towards them, a large poof of dust following him. “HIDE ME!” Ze shouted, crouching down behind Sukaaretto and shaking with freight. , “Ze, what’s the matter?” Sukaaretto asked, turning to look down at her cousin. But Sukaaretto already knew. There was only one person that could scare Ze this badly. However before Ze could open his mouth, something grabbed Sukaaretto around the waist from behind, and lifted her in to the air.
“SUKAARETTO, I MISSED YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!” A familiar voice shouted, hurting Sukaaretto’s ears, and making her pin them down to her head. Flailing her legs, she turned to see who was squeezing her to death, and purple, excited eyes stared up at her. The torches on the walls eliminated bright blond hair, and Sukaaretto caught a glimpse of a simple white kimono.
“G-Gina, wha-what are you doing back? I thought you and your family moved north” Sukaaretto managed to gasp as she struggled against her friend’s strong hold. Gina Kyoko was one of Sukaaretto’s friends from the village, and she was a hyper child, who was obsessed with shiny things.
“My family moved back to the village, and we’re going to be staying here forever.” Gina said happily, squeezing Sukaaretto even harder.
“Ahh, Gina, it’s good to see you, but can’t…breathe.” Sukaaretto gasped, tapping lightly on Gina’s shoulder to try and make her let go. She released her, and she fell on the floor, gasping for breath. Arekkusu helped Sukaaretto up and the two turned to her as she said, “OH, shiny!” And sped off towards Ze. She leaped on him, and the two rolled about on the floor, small yelps of excitement and surprise filling the air.
“Give me the shiny thing!” Gina shouted, grasping at the shiny golden pendent around Ze’s neck. “No, let me go shiny freak.” Ze yelled back, twisting this way and that to try and break free from the young girls’ hold.
“What is going on out here?” A soft voice asked. Every one turned to see a tall female with long top of the back length dark brown hair and chocolate colored eyes, turning the corner. Sukaaretto and Arekkusu respectfully bowed to their aunt Ririi. Aunt Ririi was Ze’s mom, and she taught the children how to respect and use the art of blacksmithing. Aunt Ririi was a half demon leopard with two triangle shaped leopard ears and a long dark brown leopard tail. She welds the sword of the cheetah, a swift sword with the handle in the shape of a cheetah’s tail.
“Oh, Gina, you’re back, it’s good to see you again. But, um, what are you doing to my son?” Aunt Ririi said, spotting the wrestling Gina and Ze on the floor. Her ear twitched in bewilderment when Gina shouted out, “I WANT THE SHINY THING!” Sighing, Sukaaretto took out a shiny dragon’s scale necklace and held it over her friends head. “Here Gina, want shiny?” The girl stopped wrestling with Ze and stared up at the dragon’s scale with a far off look in her eyes as she mumbled, “Shiny, shiny thing.” While Ze wiggled out from under her and quietly slinked off down the hall.
Sukaaretto let Gina hold the dragon’s scale, and watched as her friend rubbed it against her cheek, still mumbling, “Shiny…” Arekkusu whispered in his cousin’s ear, making it twitch when he accidently breathed on it, “Sukaaretto, you’d better get that back from Gina, remember, I gave that to you as a New Years present.” “Don’t worry Arekkusu, we just need to take her down stairs, make her some tea, and she’ll be as calm as a little newborn pup.” She replied, helping Gina to her feet and taking her downstairs. Arekkusu followed close behind the two, ready in case Gina went crazy and the two stumbled down the stairs.
Sukaaretto helped Gina down the staircase and walked her in to the dining room, sitting her down in a sit next to her own. Her father came in with a hot cup of jade tea a moment later, and set it down in front of Gina, who squealed happily and drank it down in seconds.
Shoon Jonson was the leader of the Animal Swords Clan. He was a tall male with long shoulder length bright orange hair and sky blue eyes. He was a half wolf demon with wolf ears perched on top of his head and a long orange wolfs tail. His kimono was a light sky blue, with a white cloud pattern. His sword was called the Owl Sword, and it really suited her father well. Shoon could see well in the dark, like any nocturnal animal, such as a fox or owl, and he used that to his advantage, sneaking up on the enemy, and ambushing them. He was nicknamed the Night Owl.
Gina calmed down instantly and her hold on the dragon’s scale lessoned, and Sukaaretto reached for it. Grasping the shiny necklace, she gently yanked it from her friends’ hands and Gina easily released it. Sighing happily, Sukaaretto put the necklace back around her neck and hid it under her kimono, so as not to excite Gina again.
The rest of the family quietly and quickly filed in to the dining room a few moments later, and sat down at the table to wait for lunch. There was Aunts Mearii, Vaioreto, Ririi, Roozumarii, and Bera.
Aunt Roozumarii was the teacher of the family that taught the children how to garden. She was a shorter female cat with shoulder length crow black hair and dark brown eyes. Her kimono was a simple earth brown, and her sword was the Rabbit Sword, a powerful sword with a small white puff ball glued to the end of the long handle. Aunt Roozumarii wasn’t a bigger fighter, she only fought when she needed to. She was cousin Emirii and Arekkusu’s mother.
Aunt Bera wasn’t really much of a teacher or a fighter; she was like Sukaaretto’s mother, Penii. The two took care of the younger children up in the playroom, or took them outside, and they both hid the children when danger threatened, tucking them safely away in a hidden passage in the castle. Bera didn’t wear a fighting kimono, but just a simple white one. Aunt Bera and Penii were twins; so naturally, the two looked exactly the same, except that Bera did not have any red strips in her hair. She did not weld a weapon either.
Then there was Uncles Samu, Zakku, and Makkusu II named after their grandfather. Of course Sukaaretto’s cousins and the younger children of their clan came next. There were her cousins, Emirii, Arekkusu, (named after a great-great cousin that lived during the time of Makkusu), Ze, Jenii, Makku, and Rozanna. And last, Sukaaretto’s two siblings Anna and Eraija charged in to the dining room, laughing heartily at the game of tag they were still playing with their cousins.
Sukaaretto laughed as she watched them, remembering back to when she, Arekkusu and Ze had been their ages and had played like that too, then she sighed almost unhappily. She missed those days, when they could just be carefree and have fun, but they were all growing up and they had to take on responsibilities as they grew. (Oh well, no one ever said growing up would just all be cotton candy and fun. It’s all part of life.) Sukaaretto thought, watching the younger kids play and laugh in happiness. She looked at each of her family members. Jenii and Anna were both the same age, some people in the family actually nicknamed them the twins because they were inseparable, from the first day the two of them were born.
Anna was a 25% cheetah, 25% wolf half demon with long shoulder length black, red stripped hair like her mother, and dark brown eyes. Her kimono was a baby soft pink.
Jenii was Ze’s younger sister, and she was the opposite of him, although she and Ze did have the same physical features. She was a 40% leopard, 5% spider, and 5% snake half demon with long, shoulder blade length black hair and bright, sparkling black eyes. Her kimono was also a soft baby pink, although a lighter shade.
Jeimuzu looked like a smaller version of Shoon. He was a 40% wolf, 10% cheetah half demon with shoulder length orange hair, and bright blue eyes. He wore a simple tan kimono.
Sukaaretto’s eyes trailed over Makku and Rozanna. The two were Arekkusu’s younger siblings. The two were also twins, and they looked slightly alike, except for a few minor differences. Makku was a 40% turtle, 10% lynx half demon with shoulder length dark brown hair and caramel brown colored eyes. Rozanna was a 40% lynx, 10% turtle half demon with lighter brown hair and dark chocolate brown eyes. Makku wore a light blue kimono; Rozanna wore a light pink one.
Finally, Sukaaretto looked up at her two uncles, Zakku and Makkusu II. Uncle Zakku was the medical teacher/doctor of the family, although Penii and Bera occasionally helped him, particularly when one of the females was giving birth. Zakku was a gentle half demon jaguar with shoulder length pitch black hair and deep brown eyes. He wasn’t a fighter, he was just the family’s doctor, but he had a secret weapon of the Deer Sword, a sword with natural healing abilities and a strong blade.
Makkusu was a carpenter, like his father before him. He was a half demon tiger with short, cropped black hair and light, sparkling brown eyes. He wore a sandy brown kimono and his weapon was the Beaver Sword, a powerful blade with the ability to build a structure within minutes, and block off the enemy. He taught the children how to build structures and hardly yelled if they did something wrong. He was the family’s carpenter, and whenever something in the castle needed to be rebuilt he would hop happily on the job.
Sukaaretto laughed as she watched her family as they all sat down for lunch, some arguing about something or another. Talking happily with Ze, Arekkusu, and Gina, she thought to herself (This is my home, and my family; it always will be, no matter what.)
