Marie had found rather quickly that Emery was not the type of child one could "interest" in things. When the woman had figured out that she was emotionless, that meant entirely. The closest the toddler seemed to come to caring about anything was the book she seemed to be so protective of. Despite that, the girl was neither an unpleasant or bad child. Marie enjoyed her company and liked to take her places that would at least attract the girl's attention for a period of time.
Today they had gone shopping and were stopped in front of a very large fountain to eat their lunch. It was sunny and rather warm for that time of year, so the fountain had been turned on and opened to the public, which meant they could stay and watch it as it moved. Emery had even chosen to sit on its very edge, facing away, so she could eat her lunch and observe people while having the occasional droplets of cool water splash up onto her back and hair - something the toddler had a strange fascination with (as much as one like her could).

Blegh, shopping. Despite what Loki's mother said about meeting new people and enjoying the sights, the toddler was not at all happy. There were no animals; and so in his opinion, this was another one of his mother's pointless attempts to bond with him. The mall had an outdoor plaza with a large fountain in the middle of it; one that people tended to throw gold in for reasons beyond Loki. He didn't want to go to Borders. He didn't want to go to Build-a-Bear, he didn't want to go to the dreaded Disney Store. He didn't want to go--hey. That store actually looked cool!
Risa sighed when she noticed what shop had caught her son's interest. "No, Loki," she said pleasantly. "We're not going into Hot Topic today. Come on. The outdoor food courts are just beyond the fountain. I'll get you something." Like a giant pretzel or those pizza slice cookies.
Loki sighed. Of course his mother wouldn't take him into the coolest store in the entire mall. He made his way towards the fountain, studying the girl sitting on the fountain's edge. Interesting.

For the most part, Emery ignored Loki when he approached the fountain. He hadn't addressed her, and she didn't have much to say. Besides, from where she was seated, she could watch the people coming and going, including the ones leaving that dark store with the loud music.
The toddler continued to eat her sandwich in peace, nibbling it, till she eventually noticed that Loki was staring at her. "Yes?"

Loki had been ready to leave the fountain, until Emery spoke. The girl who looked much too much like the people who made his Daddy angry was boring! He watched her a moment longer, before giving her a smile. "Hi," he said. Maybe if he was friendlier, she'd become more interesting? Somehow he doubted that.
He sat on the edge of the fountain, not taking his eyes from her. "I Loki, what your name?" Maybe she would play with him. Maybe they could be friends.

"I'm Emery." she replied, watching him back before turning and pointing to a man leaving the hot topic. "That man plays music in a band. I saw him in the store with the loud music." It was about as close to conversation as she could think up at present before resorting back to her usual.
"So how are you?"

"Emery a nice name," Loki said with a smile. It was easy to be polite to someone who seemed so out of it. "I don't like loud noises," he said with a slight frown. It had always been Milo who made the loud noises.
"I good," Loki said, obviously puzzled. "Whatcha doing? Shopping? Wanna play?"

"Store is very loud." Emery explained, "Lots of music and people talking."
The girl blinked but nodded. "Yes, Mother and I were shopping. But we can play."
