Character Name: Alirien
Age: 17
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual when he "gets over it" Asexual, for the time being.
Craft/Rank: Candidate

History: Alirien was raised in Namor Hold, the second-youngest of five children, but the only boy. His eldest sister was only oldest by two turns, and his youngest by three. As it was easiest, he was simply raised as another girl, and one of the group. His father was a fisherman, not one of the best in their Hold, but not too poor at his Craft either. He had tried to teach the boy the Craft, but it was more than obvious that Alirien had no interest for learning it. He would always rather help his mother in the kitchens to make sweetbreads, or look after his sisters when he was old enough to handle the responsibility.

As the only boy in their brood, Alirien missed out on some parts of childhood. This was all of his own doing, though. He didn't go out and play with other boys. He stayed with his sisters, braided hair, and took to heart whenever his mother asked them to keep out of trouble. The levels of female energy in his home just drowned out all of the "manhood" lessons his father tried so hard to teach him. He'd much rather just play with his sisters and learn with them, why should he be any different? He felt, at his youngest, that he was just being picked on because he wasn't old enough to be with his older sisters and their lessons and his father was just being mean, but once his little sister was born and he still had issues with these lessons in being a man, he started rebelling. Only a little at first, and in very subtle ways. His father would start trying to get some good father-son time in with him, and he'd quickly slip out the door and hide somewhere until his father stopped looking. Over time these little escapes and shirking of 'duty' escalated into outright demanding why he should be given any other treatment than his sisters. He was no different than they were! He wasn't too little, or too old, so why single him out and not them, huh? Huh?

He eventually got his way. He was too set in his ways for either parent to break the idea that he isn't any different than any of his sisters, or any other girl in the Hold, and that boys had to have something wrong about them if they were all singled out like he'd been. He set his foot down firmly in the sand that he was just like his sisters, and he was going to be burned by Threadfall before that notion ever changed. He took over watching his younger sister while his mother was busy in the kitchen, alerting the woman when even the slightest peep was made and she could be tended to. Even if he couldn't take care of her, yet, he'd be darned if he couldn't make sure his baby sister was at least happy with their mother distracted with work and chores around the home. His older sisters didn't often escape his watching eyes either, he'd be the first to tell them about that rock in front of them before they could trip on it, or to run and fetch his mother when either of them scraped themselves on anything sharp.

As turns passed he was nearly their second mother, watching over his sisters like a hawk. When his oldest two sisters started growing a liking for boys, and other boys liking them, he'd always plant himself firmly in the line of sight and glower at any suitors. If he had a particular dislike for any of them, or how they were eyeing his sisters, then he'd promptly chase them off and return to keep an even closer eye over his sisters for the next day or two to make sure they didn't return.

He was 13 turns when a searchrider visited their Hold. His sisters had wanted to see the dragon so badly he couldn't say no. Especially not when his parents were also going to see the dragon and rider pair. He had nearly fumed outright at the rider though when his younger sister lined up with some of the other younger children as Candidate hopefuls. They were not going to take her from his watch! It only helped a small amount the dragon, a green, was female, that didn't save the rider from his impending wrath though, should she have been chosen. When she wasn't he very audibly voiced his relief.

That action had brought attention onto him though, and to his surprise, and many that knew the boy-hating kid, he was selected out as a possibility. His first reaction was of course to not go. He couldn't leave behind his sisters, his family, who would look after them? His father was always out doing his work, he couldn't keep those boys away from them like HE could! His sisters insisted they'd be fine though (a little too eagerly on the eldest's part, she had her eye on a couple boys in the Hold and Alirien was giving them grief), and his mother urged him to take the chance. Maybe a time away from home could open the boy up some more and not have him so turned away from other boys. He needed to be around more boys his age anyway, and in the Weyrs they were separated into boys, and girls barracks so he'd have to. Really they weren't any different from himself he just needed the time away to figure that out she thought. A long discussion followed, and Alirien finally gave in. Alright, he'd go to the Weyr, but when he didn't Impress to any dragons he was coming right home and they weren't going to stop him! It just hasn't happened yet.

Description: Lanky. Alirien is a little on the tall side at 5'6, and not fully built to accommodate the height. His hair which he keeps tied back is a dark brown and hangs just below his shoulder blades in the back; he refuses to have it cut as it reminds him of home and his younger sister who would weave flowers in it. His eyes are an olive shade ans almost always kept narrowed in a scowl or glower. He has a healthy tan for being outside quite often.

Personality: Alirien dislikes the male gender greatly. His father was not home often, during the right hours of the day at least, to be there much and show a real positive male influence for him, so he just adjusted to the idea that only women could be trusted. Men had ulterior motives.. disregarding the fact that he is one himself, of course. He's wise to their plans. Life at the Weyr as a candidate may have warmed him up, the slightest bit, to his fellow gender, but not by much. He still much prefers the company of girls and he likes to think of them as his adopted sisters. He'll be looking out for any of them as often as they can.

He can easily come off as overbearing if you're not used to him...or.. if you are used to him, as well. He's had the term "mother hen" thrown at him once but he used the little title with pride, keeping "his" girls under his wing and out of trouble as much as he can. Any hint of one of the girls he's more attached to getting into trouble, or having too many sets of eyes on her, in the bad way, he's on it. It doesn't matter if you happen to be older than him, if you're female and he feels attached to you in some way, you're under his protection whether you like it or not. Any boy you have interest in better watch their backs, and pass his tests before he lets them get near you. If he has anything to say about it, at least. This Weyr life and Candidate duties have a way of putting a dampener on his tactics sometimes.

He finds it easier to bond with girls that are younger than him. He sees something in them that reminds him of his younger sister back home in the Hold, and it takes off some homesickness. He also argues that this is why he hasn't just gone home yet. There are more girls that need his watch here, and his sister did say she could take care of herself. She'll be fine for just one more turn; then more younger girls arrive each Clutch.

Alirien has some problems with following authority figures, if they happen to be male. He will listen, only because he has to, but that does not mean he has to do it and LIKE it. You're male, therefor there is something flawed in the way you are running things. That's just the way it is.

Other: He is rather fond of babysitting, even if he isn't actually tasked to that chore himself. Younger boys he seems to not have such an aversion to, because they are little. They're harmless before they start learning from older boys. If he never Impresses, there is a high chance he may stay on and just take up watching after children as a full-time babysitter to keep them out of trouble. He has toyed with this idea at least a few times lately and it's getting likable each time.
