Sharkal rolled his eyes as Kaatan tried to defend the riders. "Maybe the dragons are stupid, then," he muttered under his breath. No, that was wrong, and he knew it was wrong. He really ought not speak poorly of the dragons. He sniffed and glanced away, distracted briefly by his gold lizard doing her part to keep Telgar clean.

"N'aw, the dragons woulda just picked boys, I bet. There were a whole lotta choices. Besides! That girl with the spotted green dragon punched me right in the face. In the face! You aren't supposed to fight when you gotta dragon, even I know better." Sharkal huffed unhappily, quickly losing himself to his grudges. Shimmer chirped and tilted her head before scampering over. Clearly, her boy needed some assistance.

"It just isn't fair..." A lot like this floor scrubbing.

Kaatan felt all the muscles in his body tighten as his scrubbing companion insulted the dragons, but he could tell with just a quick glance that he hadn't meant it. Besides, no weyrbrat would insult the dragons truthfully. Not after growing up around them.

"Just because you haven't Impressed yet," he said solidly, "does not make it unfair. Would you want a dragon that you are not meant to be with? A wrong Impression is only detrimental... and impossible. When there's a dragon for you, you'll Impress." Same as me... It was clear to Kaatan that Shark was older than he was. However, he felt like he was talking to a weyrbrat who had just Stood at his first Hatching, and failed to Impress. "Until then... we're both stuck doing stuff like this." He shifted on his feet to scrub a little further down, glad to be making progress again.

"And besides, judging by the way you seem to start up any tiff you get in to... You probably deserved to be punched." His tone was different - jesting - but it was accompanied by a crooked sardonic smile. That was a little detail that he couldn't just let go.

Sharkal grunted, leaning into his scrubbing as Kaatan carried on. The blond rolled his eyes, but did not interrupt the preaching, the fight having slowly drained out of the weyrbrat, giving way to a tired hopelessness. "You aren't my mother," he finally retorted when the younger candidate seemed to pause. Only Norra got to scold the wayward blond (and she wasn't his mother, either, but their relationship was definitely that of mother and child) and Shark didn't want this brat getting the wrong idea.

At the last comment, the youth's head jerked up and he glanced over, lips curled back into a small, unhappy snarl. "I did not," he insisted, three steps away from pitching another temper tantrum. "You weren't there. You don't know. Just because she's a sharding dragonrider now doesn' give her the right to punch people. She ain' supposed to be fightin' at all, not with a dragon! And that's why she don' deserve that dragon, dimglow, because she ain' takin' it seriously!" Sharkal finished his rant with a snort, his scrubbing forgotten as his bright blue eyes all but dared Kaatan to challenge his opinion.

"Gladly, I'm not," he replied with a huff. He was glad to not be related to his kid - or at least, as far as he could tell. Relations weren't all that important here anyway.

With his retort, Kaatan leaned back on his heels for a moment, and frowned. "I'm not sure you're the one to say if someone deserves a dragon or not." His tone was even - it was a topic that he didn't take very lightly. Dragons were special creatures, and no one could tell them who they could or could not Impress. That was how stands Impressions happened in the first place. So perhaps that he had just issued a challenge of his own...

Blue eyes flashing, Shark curled his lips in a much wider snarl. A low growl rumbled somewhere deep inside and the youth retreated a few steps back.

"Stop bein' a shardin' idiot and listen to me!" the weyrbrat hissed, throwing his scrub brush to the ground. It clattered across the floor, startling Shimmer into the air with an unhappy chirp. "It ain' like it's my personal opinion 'er something. It's a rule that dragonriders ain' supposed to fight, so they dun go and get hurt and hurt their dragons. Even I know that an' I don' have one. An' if anyone, it don' even matter that she's a sharding girl, if anyone can' see the value in their dragon's life an' they go an' ignore that fact, then they do not deserve what they've been given, you hear me! It ain' a matter of if th' dragon's right 'er wrong but the rider's disregard for it, shardit, 'specially when there are so many others out there who wouldn' do that!"

Sharkal's jaw clicked shut and he glanced around, eyes wide. Did he really just go off like that?

A smile slowly curled on to Kaatan's lips. He had finally gotten the boy to lash out whatever it was that was frustrating him so much. "Ok," he said simply with a shrug, then bent back over his scrubbing. The boy was right, though he wouldn't say that outright. Then again, he was one to talk about going and fighting, really. That would be an issue for him, were he to Impress.

"We're back to the waiting game," he sad, his tone much lighter than it had been. "Waiting for a clutch, that is. Though she might rise again this Turn, which would be great to see, especially after the fiasco with the golden egg at the last hatching - that bronze was impressive though, that's for sure." Easy enough to change the subject - and something they could both relate to. Even though Kaatan hadn't stood, the hatching had affected him as a spectator - as it did the entire Weyr.
