The ladder would be a metaphor for money, an easy way into almost anyone's heart. The axe however would probably be hard work, as it requires a bit of effort to cut down a tree with an axe, I know from experience.
I'll disagree with the money thing slightly. It's more like a cherry picker since a ladder still requires you to put effort into climbing and not all people equate money with love.
