I was recently watching an episode (well an episode set actually) of of Dr. Who from the 70's with Tom Baker (I <3 Tom Baker) called stones of blood.
I wrote about it in my personal journal and feel compelled to share it here too.
Watching Dr. Who...and he's being attacked my giant vampire stones. Not stone people, not really even stone monsters, Just big silly glowing stones that kind of slide along and somehow manage to kill people and feed on their blood anyway.... I've seen a lot of episodes of old Dr. Who and a lot of them are really silly, but this one is so far the silliest. It's kind of too bad as the Key of time series is one I legitimately like as science fiction, but I can't take any of this as even remotely serious science fiction.
I'm still watching as I write this and there are apparently several silly rock...things. The rocks and the especially bad special effects in this episode are pretty much a never ending source of hilarity.
Anyway else have some "gems" from old Dr. Who? Or any vintage Sci Fi?

Perhaps a better question, is when is any sci fi not ridiculous? Even the classics have a certain level of campy unrealistic silliness.
I don't think I've ever seen any Sci Fi handled with complete seriousness.

Sci-fi is completely ridiculous in its very own way even without the screaming brain.

I just remembered that I lost access to my old Dr. Who episodes yesterday and I didn't finish that story arc. Stupid netflix changing their streaming options. sad
Now I'm going to have to watch Logan's Run or something equally as silly to get my vintage Sci Fi fix.

I've watched the old Doctor Who's but I found the majority of them a bit dull, but there were a few gems in there... The newer series are much more memorable for me...

I didn't like the newer series of Dr.Who. Dr.Who to me is all about bad special effects and cheesy story writing. I don't like it as a more serious drama.

Oh yes! Doctor Who has many good moments.
The Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The dinosaur was rather terrifying in part 1 where it was in black and white but when it got to part 2 and onward, it just looked horrible! And I don't mean horrible in the scary way.
The Web Planet is, without question, the bottom of the barrel. Horrible plot, horrible special effects, half the dialouge is poorly written as well. The TARDIS console actually roles across the floor when Barbara falls unto it. XD It's amazing how they could go from one of the best episode, The Romans, and directly after it go to the worst, The Web Planet.
What amazes me the most, is that the acting and storytelling are so amazing that I fail to notice the poor special effects and will be absolutely terrified watching some of them. Like in The Masque of Mandragora when there's a glowing light and that light is horrifying. And there's Sutekh from The Pyramids of Mars. I was really frightened by him because anything powerful enough to control the Doctor is... well pretty darn powerful.
Anywho, I think that sometimes, in the newer stuff, the fancy effects and big music can distract from the actual plot. Let's hear it for cheesy effects and medioquer music!

I feel like with New Dr.Who they're relying more on effects than story writing. (not that it doesn't have it's good episodes as well) In old Dr. Who your option was to write a good stoy or have an awful show. There was no way to dazzle people out of noticing weak plot points and poorly planned conversations.

I was just watching the original Star Wars trilogy (and yes, I mean the original version, not the annoying new updated version which looks worse). The aliens actually look better as costumes instead of CGI.

I never understood how people could rave about how great CG is, because in most cases it just looks like CG. It usually does not blend in AT ALL, which makes it way more annoying and distracting than even then poorest costume choices. I would choose costumes and sets any day over CG.

And models, I miss seeing shots with well done models. Explosions and disasters were always great that way.
