1984 by George Orwel
It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the vers and adjectives, but there are hundereds of nouns that can be got rid of as well."

It's true when you think about it. In a study of teaching primates to understand language, scientists managed to effectively cut down the entire english language down to 200 words.

So why don't we use that simple 200 word vocabulary? Wouldn't that make life easier if we only had to learn 200 words to convey everything we needed to say rather than the thousands of words and meanings we're expected to know?

1984 by George Orwell
"If you have a word like 'good,' what need is there for a word like 'bad'? 'Ungood' will do just as well -better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of 'good,' what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like 'excellent' and 'splendid' and all the rest of them? 'Plusgood' covers the meaning, or 'doubleplusgood' if you want something stronger still."

So why don't we simply have the simple basic words and a set of prefixes for all the meanings of all the words we have?

The reason is because all words have different meanings. No two words are perfect synonyms or antonyms. Every individual word has its own meaning onto itself.

Simple choice of words can elicit a certian tone, dialect, or even a 'between the lines' meaning. Just as you cannot simply replace hundereds of words with one, not all words are interchangable with eachother.

Learn to recognize and avoid thesarus rape. Thesarus rape is simply jumping to your thesarus for every word in a sentence to change it to something else without a second thought to the meaning of the word. The best way to expand your vocabulary is to read more works with a better word choice. It is much more effective to learn through context the meaning of a word rather than a simple description.

Our assignment for this lesson will delve into the intricasies of language and word choice.
