Here are some recent things I made...

---
edit: Here are some things from the end of February... I was trying to draw the same thing in a few different styles.

Made this one on my Nintendo DS during breaks at work March 9-10, 2010. Coloured in openCanvas. The DS screen is small, so some of the lines are a bit messy...

Please disregard the misspelt "rhythm" or the text entirely. I kinda wrote it in a rush. March 5th here, also made on my DS. Still life, as I hope you can tell.

Date included, made this on the computer. I normally don't draw extremely poofy anime hair or big eyes, but I wanna be able to draw more "typical" anime styles like that, too.

I guess I'd like critique on anything other than the rhymes in the cellphone still life. Line art, general colouring, shading, overall concept, whether or not the poses and such are clear, etc. Please be as harsh as you'd like.

Very nice shading on the cell phone, but watch your symmetry. The left side of the cell phone is nice and symmetric, but the other side isn't. Same can be said with the top and bottom portions of the phone, even in perspective this isn't right.

For the comic on the bottom, It's pretty hard to read the white shirted-guy's actions, especially in the first panel. Is he being cocky? Genuinely curious? I can't tell, his pose and facial expression is just too ambiguous. Be especially careful with the pointing-upward head angle. The brown-haired guy has very readable poses though, I can tell when he's being genuinely interested or mildly ticked off.

Cool first picture. I tried working with the Colors! application on the DS, and it was tough. Kudos to you. XD

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the symmetry on the cell phone... It's not a good quality picture, but this is what my phone should look like:

Wish I could get a better picture... something's certainly off (other than the lines being a bit wobbly and the colours not being 100% realistic), but I can't put my finger on it.

And I'll keep the other things you said in mind. Thanks for the critique.

If you're interested at all, you can see how the two DS pictures were made at these links:

Though they're pretty much crap compared to the amazing masterpieces people post on that site.

Here's a quick redline. Sorry for the sloppiness.
User Image

In machines and other non-organic forms, it's jarring to the viewer when something is off symmetry. Even curved lines on machines are treated with symmetry. This is one reason why I hate drawing technology.

On an interesting side note, it's jarring to the viewer when an organic form has straight lines (example: a human body. It will always have curves, even if it's ever-so-slight).

Here's a quick outline of it... though I guess it doesn't really help much (and it should be rounder, but I just used the straight line tool).
User Image
But I dunno, the silver part on the inside is supposed to have some curve, and the outter part is supposed to round off onto the side, perhaps less noticeably on the other side due to the angle, but I probably messed things up. The edge is meant to be fairly straight in comparison to the inner silver part, though it should probably be more parallel than I made it.

And that is an interesting side note, though isn't a lot of modern technology/machinery smooth/round? In any case, that explains some issues I've had in some drawings of characters. Sometimes I'd try making the side of the face a rather straight line after the cheek bone, but it never looked right.

For sake of simplicity and exaggerated style, it's not a bad thing to use straight lines on a character (and in the case of anime, easier to animate), but there will always be curved lines on a normal human being, especially if you're drawing him/her realistically. It does create a nice rhythm when you try to avoid straights, though.

I understand the silver part is supposed to have a curve, but your drawing's silver part isn't symmetric to the other side. Notice how, in your greenlined drawing, the left side's silver part starts curving towards the bottom, while the right side's silver part starts curving more toward the middle of the phone.

Even though a lot of modern technology is starting to smooth out more, it doesn't feel organic. It relies on symmetry and whatever looks aesthetically pleasing while still being easy to reproduce. Vectors, in a way. That's why it's easier to draw modern-day technology, like a cell phone, with rulers or Photoshop, despite having curves.
