while i may think it's bulls**t as well, the government has been doing this for years, and really, just now, it's coming to light. and of course religion has played a role in all this, which is not 'a seperation of church and state' like is guranteed
history lesson: utah applied for statehood more than once, but was rejected because, states control marriage, and the government was grossed out with polygamy, and didn't want any state in the country to allow it. it wasn't allowed to become a state until the mormon church did away with polygamy (since they were the culprits of it).
not that i'm ok with polygamy coming back ever (and i think if there's a federal law legalizing gay marriage, polygamy will have to be legalized as well, because guys will be saying 'oh a guy can love a guy, but a guy can't love five women at once?'), and i would be happy if gay marriage was legalized, and actually would be ok if the federal level took over marriage in general, but people are scared of invoking god's wrath by letting marriage alter in any form other than 'a man and a woman in monogamy'.

What's wrong with polygamy if all the individuals are of age and consent? And I don't think that most people are against alternative marriage styles out of fear, but misinformation. My grandma honestly believes that if gay marriage is allowed, then we'll also be able to marry dogs and inanimate objects. If I brought up polygamy rights to her I'm sure she'd have no concept of it being anything but the FLDS style and would say something like "do you want to not be able to choose who you marry and have to share him" blah blah blah. People in general are gullible, if you don't want them to fall for the opposing party's propaganda you have to advertise your information as much as they do and provide evidence that you're not the liars and manipulators.
i guess i see it as degrading to women. that she is expected to stay home and be faithful to him, but he is free to go out and date and seek other partners. it doesn't seem fair. but on another hand, you legalize polygyny (1 husband, numerous wives), you'd have to legalize polyandry (1 wife, numerous husbands) as well.
if there's fairness involved and everyone is fine with it, that's ok. but how many people are honestly going to treat all partners with fairness, or will they use certain spouses to manipulate others, or start playing favorites and spending more time (and potentially resources) with one?
