I love Wilde. I'm also a fan of Pratchett.
In terms of 'good' books, I like Kazuo Ishiguro and Charlotte Bronte.
In terms of entertainment, I like Cory Doctorow, Christina Dodd, Stieg Larsson, Heinlein, Card, and Asimov.
And I'd never really seen Life of Pi as a search for religion before. More of a search for humanity? I don't know.

+1 for Pratchett fan. He's one of the few authors who can cheer me up after an R.R. Martin slaughter fest.
Ursula Le Guin and Guy Gavriel Kay are also two of my favorites.

My favourite author of all time is Vladimir Nabokov. His writing is absolutely beautiful and unique, and he's my biggest inspiration. I've read almost all of his short stories and books and have obsessively studied them for allusions and wordplay and such. I'm such a nerd. . . .
I also love JK Rowling, Markus Zusak, Daniel Handler, Neil Gaiman, JRR Tolkien, and CS Lewis.

I've always thought that the ultimate writer who'd be beyond critique would have the voice of Gaiman, the world of Tolkien, and the love of Rowling. In addition to those there is Patrick Rothfuss who wrote The Name of the Wind, an amazing book. My first favorite author was John Grisham, though that was when I was of the age when every book was a good book. Pride and Prejudice is a book I re-read a lot, but I don't like any other of Austen's works. I can't think of anyone else worth mentioning right now.

I'm not a fan of Jane Austen mostly, nor do I really like Pride and Prejudice. I do remember reading and enjoying Emma though...

Emma makes me cringe at the violent awkward. She's just so . . . silly.
And I found a new author I adore: Richard Kadrey. Highly recommend him to anyone who likes spec fic.

Bram Stoker, Gail Carriger (newish author, fantastic), Tanya Huff, Rob Thurman, Jim Butcher, Rick Riordan, Anthony Horowitz, Kelley Armstrong, Sara Prineas, Dianne Wynne Jones, Neil Gaiman, Lynn Flewelling (very good, a new one White Road, just came out). I also quite enjoy Jasper Fforde, Charlaine Harris, Gerald Morris, Lloyd Alexander, David Eddings, Megan Brown and Piers Anthony.
I don't do well choosing favorites. I like a lot of authors.
