Tunnelsnakes? Again?

So maybe, maybe, last time he had sort of snuck of with Roni to go hunting for flit eggs (and found some, so it wasn't like a waste of time!). And maybe that sort of made it look like he just did a really bad job at catching tunnelsnakes. So maybe that deemed it necessary for him to, you know, try again, or teach him a lesson, or something, but honestly! You'd think they'd give up already!

Moaning softly, Fellendar carded a hand through his messy hair, wondering why he had so much wine last night (this really wasn't an uncommon thought, as far as the candidate's mornings were concerned) as he glanced around for any other candidates left behind. Barely remembering to put on some fresh clothing and pat his unruly black hair down before stumbling out into the hallway, he couldn't contain the yelp when he almost plowed someone else over. "Sorry, sorry," he replied, toothy grin already fixed in place. "I wasn't watching where I was going! Not really a morning person, you know? I'm Fellendar, by the way, but my friends call me Fell."

Delilah wasn't in any kind of hurry to get to her chores; she was supposed to be in the kitchens today, and they were quite possibly her least favorite place in the entire Weyr, with the worst jobs! There were simply far too many things that could go wrong when it came to cooking and related tasks, and to top it off, sharp and hot things were involved. So not only was it easy to screw up, it hurt when she did! Maybe one of these days they'd finally get sick of her and ban her from the kitchens entirely.

Ha, if only! It was just going to be another bad day, like every other day, and there was no getting around it. Not that resignation ever stopped the candidate from brooding, which was exactly what she was doing when someone ran into her.

Great. Barely out of bed and already something had gone wrong! Not that Lilah was surprised it would happen, but she was a little startled by it. It ws awfully sudden, after all. She stared blankly at the boy for a moment, then gave a very...snotty-sounding (literally) sniff and wiped her nose on her sleeve.

"S'okay," she said, apathetic. "Mornings are awful. I'm Lilah."

...well.

That was gross.

Fellendar cleared his throat, trying his best to ignore the snot-sleeve as he took a step back, glancing around to see if there was anyone else within distance. Nope. Looks like he was stuck with Snots-a-lot. Carding a hand through his hair, the youth decided against good manners and did not extend his hand for a friendly shake.

"Nice to met you, Lilah," he said instead. "Glad we can agree on that morning thing, though. Seems kind of foolish to send us out to chores so early, doesn't it? I mean, we're all half asleep right now, no wonder no one actually catches the tunnelsnakes! They aren't fast enough because their brain is still trying to catch up with them!" Fellendar beamed then, hand finding a way to his hip.

"So, what are your chores for today? I've been saddled with the tunnelsnakes. Again." The former Harper wrinkled his nose dramatically. "You'd think, eventually, they'd realize I wasn't any good at catching the sharding things."

Oh yeah, totally gross. Still, it was better than not wiping her nose at all and just letting the snot run on down. Then it would have gotten on her lip and then in her mouth and that would have been especially gross. Snot on her sleeve was one thing, while in her mouth was entirely another. She would take sleeve any day, and did, as a matter of fact. Lilah had a habit of losing handkerchiefs.

"Kitchen," she answered unhappily. "I'm not sure why they bother puttin' me there, either. Tunnelsnakes're worse, though. You gotta pretend like you're trying to catch 'em, but don't actually do it."

"That what I do, anyway. I'd just get bit if I caught one, so I don't catch it in the first place."

Hmm. Didn't want to be on kitchen duty, eh? As long as Lilah's snotty sleeve never made direct contact with Fellendar's person, they'd get along just fine. Who knows, maybe the snot was just a one time incident. Everyone got a little snotty every now and again, except for himself, that was, but it would be a lot to ask of people to be as perfect as him.

"Exactly! I'm glad someone else understands," Fell gushed happily, carding his free hand through his thick black hair. "Candidates like us gotta stick together, you know? No use sticking around those brats carrying on about 'good work ethic' and hanging off every word the candidatemaster bellows." The former Harper paused, giving Lilah a good once over before jerking his chin towards her.

"So whaddya say, kid? Why don't we get out of here for a little while? I'm sure we can find better things that don't involve dishes or tunnelsnakes." There was a long pause as Fellendar's face slowly lit up. "Better idea! We set the tunnelsnakes loose in the kitchen."

Delilah was totally on board with Fellendar as far as chores were concerned, but the moment he suggested they actually skip on them, he lost her. And when he suggested a prank? Yeah, she was gone.

She blinked at him, clearly anything but enthused or impressed by such brilliance. "We'll get in trouble. 'Sides, we'd have to catch tunnelsnakes to do that, and neither of us can catch 'em."

So, really, it was an altogether stupid idea. Inventive, but stupid.

Hey now! He just offered her one of his most favorite pranks and she was going to pass this brilliant opportunity? Now what was with that? Fellendar couldn't help the small frown of dismay as Delilah so quickly turned him down, clearly thrown off by her ready rejection of his amazing plans.

"We only get in trouble if we get caught, first of all. And I'll have you know, I never get caught. And even if we did, I can talk my way out of anything." Which wasn't entirely true, he did get caught shirking on rare occasion, but he'd never actually been punished. Maybe it was just his charming grin, but the most Fellendar had ever received was a slap on the wrist before being shuffled back to his assigned chore of the day. "Yeah, but see, now we have good motive to catch 'em. It will be fun, I promise."

"No way. Maybe you haven't been caught yet, but there's a first time for everything." Lilah crossed her arms stubbornly. She might hate chores on account of how bad she was at them, but at least she didn't get in trouble for her chronic failure. As long as she showed up and tried - well, sort of tried - she was pretty much in the clear.

"I'm not catchin' tunnelsnakes. I'd rather get cut than get bit."

Fellendar snorted, eyebrows all but shooting off his forehead all together. "Well, aren't you just a little bowl of sunshine," he replied with a smile. "We'll never know if we don't try. You know that, right? Besides, they never really repeat first time offenders, so if we get caught, which we wouldn't, it's not like you'll even really get in trouble. You know, you really can't knock it until you try it." And on turned that smile again, bright as the midday sun. "Just once. It will be fun, I swear. And I'll even do all the catching, that way you can't possibly be bitten, okay? You just hold the sack while I wrangle the tunnelsnakes."

Honestly, Fell couldn't think of a better deal. Who could turn down such an opportunity? "So, whaddya say?"
