Empyris shut the door to his small cottage and took a deep breath. The sun was just setting, shooting colors of pinks and blues across the sky like piant on a canvas. The spring air was crisp and clean as the sun set and the humidity slowly faded. Grabbing the small lantern waiting by the door, he set off on his nightly journey down the small, dirt path that lead into the nearby forest.

Eyes open and alert, the young phryi tilted his ears, listening for signs that anyone else was around on this quiet spring night. He disliked doing his job with observers and usually went out of the way to avoid them, even if it meant his nightly trip lasted longer than normal. It didn't help that his clients were just as skittish as he was when it came to being observed.

Humming a soft, lilting tune as he entered the forest, he shuttered his lantern. The phryi waited until the small, sputtering flame finished dying before continuing. The slow flicker of light helped him adjust to the new darkness in the green depths and he easily crossed into the overgrown grounds that was like a second a home to him.

Pausing a few feet into the forest, he lcosed his eyes and concentrated on the small fluttering sensation in his chest. He could feel them now as they slept. Slumbering deeply in their beds of leaves, their hearts fluttered in time to the tug in his own chest. That very same tug called forth the light to his markings. The green streaks of colors across his body lit up in a luminescent green color, a shade more comon in lightening bugs and other glowing creatures than someone like himself.

It was time...

His humming growing louder, he listened to the flutter of the tiny hearts that called him further into the forest. They beckoned him like sweet honey on a warm day. He could feel those tiny beats of life within him as though they were his own. Perhaps they were. He had never erally thought about it. His steps increased as their tiny thumps grew stonger withing him. His heart quickly matching their rythym until it thumped and fluttered as soft and quick as theirs.

Oh yes, he was so close now. Just a few more steps...

There it was. A small clearing surrounded by trees and bushes that had nearly been overgrown. Oh, it wasn't always here that they slept. No, he had to find them every spring, always somewhere new. Always somewhere different. Such was the way of his friends and family.

Taking a deep breath as he entered the small opening, he opened his mouth and began to sing. This time it was with words that he hummed to his friends, each note causing the colors of his body dim and brighten in accordance. The higher shades required more light than the lower notes, causing shadows to dance around him as his soft glow danced in time to his song.

Oh, they could feel him now.

He could see them too. They're powdery wings emerging as they crawled out of their cocoons to embrace the glow of his body; listen to the tune of his song. He could feel they're hearts pick up and their beats multiply as each and every one slowly awoke to the dark night.

Actias luna. Lunar Moth.

His friends, each and everyone of them. He had seen them through many generations, each spring and fall bringing him new friends, new family. He watched them awaken. Held his breath when they flew away to find mates and thanked the gods when they returned to lay eggs. They always returned to his forest, as if by some guiding force. Perhaps he called to their heart as much they called to his.

They were awake now.

They slowly took flight into the night, a little unsteady on their newly begotton wings. He gave them a smile as they lifted themselves into the air, their wings dancing in his light show. They circled his glowing body, their wings dipping to caress his body in thanks and affection for his service performed. He wouldn't see these friends again, instead his next trip into the forest would be to awaken another group of slumbering insects into the cycyle of spring. A new generation to welcome the night skies with their beauty and grace.

They were gone.

He quieted down as they left, the glow in his body fading until it was dark and solid once again. He picked up his lantern and lit the small candle inside, no longer needing to be discreet. His friends were gone and his job for the night was done. He hummed to himself as he left the clearing.

Where would his fluttering heart take him next spring? Only time would tell and he was more than willing to wait.

Green eyes twinkled in delight. He had done it again. The scene in front of him played out like a leashed beast – throwing itself back and forth, getting nowhere, but slowly destroying everything. But then again, if he wasn’t the master of planting ugly seeds in the minds of others, he didn’t know who was. Like when a butterfly gently flaps its wings on one side of the planet and creates a storm on the other side. He was a craftsman of words and manipulation, and he used his gifts at any chance he got.

Some had called him cruel; evil, even. Some had come to him with tears in their eyes, begging for a reason, other had come screaming with fury. He didn’t differentiate. In the end, all that mattered was the game he played. It wasn’t that he was cruel or spiteful; it was simply that he didn’t care. He didn’t care if the consequences of his verbal amusements ended up in heartbreaks or broken families. He didn’t care if he ruined the oldest of friendships or created animosity, jealousy and doubt between lovers.

He had no… ulterior motive. He did not hate anybody, but he did not particularly care for anybody either. His only interest in socializing was the quaint pleasure he got from observing the oddly fascinating behavior of his victims. He sometimes wondered if he could have used his gifts for a ‘greater good’. Maybe he could have used them to negotiated peace between conflicting parties, and perhaps even mend the broken parts of an otherwise lost family.

But really, where was the fun in that? The way he saw it, he did not really do that much wrong. He did nothing more but plant a few ideas here and there, voice a few things he might have overheard, and voila! These interesting people would be tearing each other apart. Fascinating. They always acted in some strange illogic way that he had never expected. He liked for things to be logic. But he also liked to observe what he didn’t understand. So really, it wasn’t his fault at all – he simply magnified their dispositions slightly.

And when the game had played out, and he had fully observed the end results, he would move on, fluttering on without a care in the world. On the prowl for his next experiment – his next victim. Oh! How he enjoyed the simple power of words.

Rangi Pacific Islander for god of the sky

Rangi loved the morning after a rainy night. The air had a damp wetness that carried the smell of a new season with it. Wiggling his nose from side to side he smiled knowing that spring was here. “It’s time,” he shouted with excitement.

Rangi walked down the mossy forest path. The threes swayed from side to side and the wind picked up it's speed. Grabbing fistfuls of Rangi hair the wind twisted it from side to side and caressed his check like a lover. He shivered in excitement as the wind seemed to tell him secrets.

“It’s here it’s time!” The wind whispered in a childlike glee as it whirled past. “Come come!,” it shouted. The wind leaped forward leaving Rangi alone on the dirt path. Being careful not to slip on the muddy ground, Rangi followed the trail the wind left. “Ho ho,” Rangi chuckled I think the wind is the most exited about this one this time around.

Soon Rangi raced into a round clearing in the middle of the woods. He could already hear the excited chatter. In the trees next to the clearing many variety of animals waited for the ceremony to begin. The chatter became silent as Rangi walked into the center of the clearing. All were excited about the coming festivities.

Rangi started to sway with the beat of wind first came north North with the snowy Mountains were the winter months never ended . Towards the mysterious east, the balmy south, and towards the west towards the Ocean. Who’s waves had crafted beaches and cliffs.

The wind howled with laughter then became silent as Rangi started to sing,

“ La’ la la’ la la’ la la’ la la’

Spring is here my dear my dear friends,

The chill of winter is no more

The rains bring flowers

Wake up Summer around the Bend

It’s time for flowers

Lets sing Spring in!”

That tattoo on rangi body became brighter and brighter until the clearing was filled with a glowing green light that pulsed with each note of Rangi Song . Butterfly's flew around Rangi as he sang. He could feel them land on his skin and lick the salt off of it. The Butterfly's signed in containment as Rangi tattoo’s flew around his skin. The animals cheered and the winds howled in glee as Rangi finished the last note in his song. His tattoo slowly stopped moving and glowing. He swayed one last time and shouted with a smile, “We welcome you spring.”
