At first we think he's 18, then we find out in body he's actually 9 or so, and now with the recent chapters he may be much older mentally! What is the author thinking!?

My opinion is Kanda after his reincarnation should be considered his actual age which is 9 (or 11 due to rumors of a time skip).
When you "reincarnate" you live again, meaning Kanda's only really 9-11 years old.
His past life no longer counts as it's over. His new life is what matters now in my honest opinion. *is strange*

It sure is confusing... but I also think his "past life" doesn´t matter and since he was reincarnated it is the actual life that counts. But why would you say he is only 9-11 years old? The past chapters were flashbacks, right? And after those he still kept aging so why would 18 years not be right? *confused again* sweatdrop

Basically my theory is this. They keep the 'apostles' in those tanks until their body ages the right amount of time, then the kids 'wake-up' for the first time in their lives. So yeah, Yuu's still 18, he just started life later because of the tank.

His actual age would be 9 considering reincarnation took place 9 years ago but he was reincarnated into the body of a 9-11 year old child thus restarting his life once again. And there's no evidence that he was in that tank for that long. That part simply states it COULD be that long before they're "ready". Yu could have been reincarnated the same day he died which explains why he would be 9 instead of 18 but physically, emotionally and mentally, he's much older due to remembering events from his past.
The flashbacks are events of his past life, before his reincarnation.
Then again, almost every site claims he's 9 because that's what the story seems to imply as of now and what I just explained.
It's like Luke fon Fabre who's really 7 years old but has the mentality and body of a 17 year old because when the original Luke fon Fabre (renamed himself Asch after the cloning) was "cloned", he was 10. However, unlike Yu, Luke didn't remember a THING because he was "cloned" so he has no memories of anything beyond the day he was "born", so it's like raising a new born child all over again (you probably wouldn't understand that quote unless you played Tales of the Abyss XD).
But that's just ONE theory XD
EDIT:
As for the woman, she could have been someone he was in love with but never got reincarnated because she's not an exorcist (she seems more like a scientist).
A second theory is that Kanda stayed in the tank for 9 years, that woman was someone who took care of him while he spent the time in there. He grew to love her (probably as a mother or something) but she died before he could wake up.
A third theory is that the one is really just an illusion Kanda made up.
