Serenity's breath caught in her throat and she looked away in embarrassment. "Haunt?" The word came out breathy and trembling, and Serenity lifted her sleeve to her mouth, clearing her throat lightly. "Haunt is such a terribly strong word..." She'd had no idea Asrai was so perceptive, or perhaps that her own emotions were so obvious. She certainly wasn't haunted by the memory...was she?
"The love of the flowers for the sun and breezes is one kind of love, perhaps even the purest kind." She kept her voice level as possible, still unsure of how much of her own hurt to reveal. She refused to break down in front of Asrai, no matter how perceptive the young homunculi may be. Dissolving into choking tears and hiccups over a man...it simply wasn't ladylike. "When you love for another person, someone not your own family..." She continued, her voice even and slow. "You start wanting to be with them for the rest of your life." She swallowed minutely and wondered just how old little Asrai was. Did she already know of betrothal and marriage? "But when you see that they have other things that they want to do with their life, things that don't involve you..." She looked down, absently smoothing her dress. "That's when it begins to hurt. When someone has become important in your life, and you realize you're not important in theirs." Her voice wavered on the last word, but tears did not fall. She looked up into the pure violet depths of Asrai's eyes and attempted a smile. She was not haunted. She wasn't.

Serenity really was fascinating. Asrai could not comprehend how she was so rigidly controlled. The homunculi was an artless creature; her emotions were plain in her eyes, on her face... but the Constellation controlled herself so carefully! The whys of that control escaped Asrai entirely, so she dismissed the thought and paid attention to the words offered instead.
"Do they realize they are that important to you? It is not that difficult to hurt unintentionally..."
She knew that well.

"I suppose..." Serenity began, swallowing heavily. The sunny day had started out so light-hearted, how did it end up going down such a painful path? "I suppose I never told him in such exact words... But, surely he must have known..." She looked down in embarrassment. She never did say the right words did she? Nothing expressly of needing and loving, such feelings were neither expected nor even required in an arranged marriage. "I had wanted to travel before he came." She kept her voice even and looked at Asrai with a small smile, as if in fond memory. "I was going to give it up for him, and stay with him after we were married. But then he left." Her lip quivered and she bit it to keep it still. "So I left. And I've had so many wondrous adventures since then." Attempting to end it on a happy note, she smiled once again. It was true; her travels had become a part of her in ways that had changed her from the innocent young maiden she'd once been. "As much as I miss what could have been, I am happy with the memories I have."

Eyes wide, Asrai fluttered over to hover in front of Serenity's nose with a panicked looked on her face.
"Don't be sad, Serenity! Asrai did not mean to make you think of sad things!"
(ahhhhhhh, sorry sorry sorry, I have to leave for work, it's later than I thought it was. I'll finish it later o.o)
