It had been a few weeks… Athena had lost count. It felt nice to have someone dote on her but oh how she missed being outside. Every attempt to leave on her own had failed… her fear for every living creature containing her until her rescuer found her once more crouched and hidden from every prying eye. Athena wasn’t sure how he was doing it… but it seemed like Oliver was captivating her like some hero in one of her books. She had begun to tell him stories when she felt capable, summarizing the plots and twisting them with her own words for his amusement, and her enjoyment. But she had to leave. She felt too attached to him. Her mind was screaming at her to run, not to fall into the trap she cursed many a female heroines for in her stories, but her heart begged her to stay put, to stay safe.

When the heroine feel in love, when she settled down into someone’s arms… something bad always happened. Lowering her head she looked about the room, eyes falling on one of the various outfits she had sent Oliver out to get. She gave him some stupid tale to spin into her family’s mind about where she was… but she didn’t know if they believed it, or even cared. Athena lowered her head, and closed her eyes before forcing herself to stand up, to go to the clothing almost robotically and manage to get in them –with a bit of stiffness-. Ath stuffed a written note into the book that she had often shared with him.

‘Oliver,

I’ve never been good at these kinds of things… but I have to leave. Plain and simple. Your not going to help me this time… because I don’t even know where I’m going so… nothing bad will happen right, I mean between us? No disputes… no problems. Nothing like what we could have faced if I would have told you face to face.

… I think I’m falling for you, thus making it impossible to stay. Everything would change, has changed, even if you didn’t see it happening.

… I cant explain it better then that.

All my love, always.
Athena'

She turned, leaving the book on the made bed and headed on her way. What more could she do?

The time seemed to pass Oliver by that he almost felt older as the sun rose in the sky. He had spent almost every waking moment with Athena after that fateful day that he found her in the night. He wanted to see her smile again. The events were still unclear to him, but all he knew was that he couldn’t tell a soul… His mouth rose to one side and looked to the sky. It was nice and nostalgic. It reminded him of the days he could sit and do nothing but watch the humans roam.

‘I wonder if Athena is awake yet’ he thought to himself as he jumped off from the ledge of the fountain; his favourite hangout place. He padded towards the market to see if he could scavenge a few scraps to share with Ath.

He came out promptly with a de-boned fish in mouth. “Off to the bakery!” He said as he began heading down the familiar path he had gone through almost everyday.

Upon arriving, the elevator had been at the ground level. He went in, put the fish down and pulled himself up to the hideout, also known as Athena’s home. He looked and saw the bed made. He tilted his head to the side and looked all around for Athena. He peered under the bed, behind the closets and even where the bakery was. She was nowhere in sight. He sat in the middle of the floor.

“I’ll just wait for her to come back.” He said to himself. He made himself comfortable on the floor and began to claw off little strands of fish meat from the morsel. Before he knew it, half the fish was gone and it was no longer icy cold.

Athena wasnt sure what it was she was doing. Her leather satchel had a few baked good she had managed to obtain easily from the below bakery on he way out, one or two outfits... a change of shoes, a few books and a scarf, but where really could she go where she wouldn't have to be smothered? She sighed, determined to at least get out of the plaza... to be less agoraphobic.

Her hand lightly went up to a chain around her neck, an owl pendent delicately carved resting there. It was her good luck charm. She found it a few days before everything happened. Before she decided to leave. Everything, seemed like it would just follow that stupid rule "everything that can go wrong will go wrong." She brought the totem to her lips and gave it a quick kiss, before darting off into the direction of the forest. Less people, more chance not to be found.

Before he knew it, he was back again, sitting in the middle of the floor. He kicked his legs in the air as he lay on his back. He noticed that dust and flour particles had began to collect in places as well as get caught in his clothes. He had visited the household many times in the past few days that the food that he brought back was beginning to pile.

‘Maybe constantly coming here wasn’t a good idea.’ He said as he sighed to himself.

He paced around the room. Maybe he should clean. If she were to return, she’d want to sleep and rest rather than to wash and clean things. He pulled a piece of paper that was used to wrap the bread that had gone stale from days ago. He made his way out of the house and back to the fountain. He wet the paper and hurried back to the household.

Working at full pace, he wiped the floors, the ceilings and anywhere that was safe to use water on and was reachable. He had arrived to the bed. It collected the most dust due to its soft texture. But something wasn’t right… was it the way it was tucked? The different bedsheets? Wait… was it that obviously set up book that was sitting on the bed? He shrugged, took it and placed it back on the bookshelf.

Athena had been wandering, searching for food not laid out or given to a pretty cat. her agoraphobia had her sticking closer to the shelter of the trees, turning her eyesight into something that could only stand the dappled sunlight drifting lazily through the trees. She was lightly chewing on a piece of stale bread from her bag, and a piece of old pigeon which had died of natural causes.

Vaguely she thought of what Oliver could be up to... if he was alright. She hoped he had stayed in her apartment, enjoying a more spacious place to his usual cluttered hole in the wall. That was when the first fat drop of rain fell through the thick branches overhead, catching on her eyelash and drifting down her cheek. During her mental escape Athena hadn't realized that a spring storm had brewed, turning the sky dark and ominous. She had little time to find a shelter... but where could she go? She was in the middle of no where, silently hoping that Oliver wasn't looking for her. This didn't seem like the most pleasant of storms.

Oliver continued to clean up and down. In a matter of hours, the place was sparkling. He noticed however, a small sheet of paper that was sitting on the floor. The edges were wet from the wiped floor. He picked it up, tried to wipe it off and opened it.

As he read the note, his eyes narrowed. The corners of his mouth stretched to the sides of his face. He was at a loss. He didn’t know what to make of it. Does he go out to get her? Or does he stay here waiting for her to return? Will she come back half dead again or will she be a new person? He shoved it in his pocket and left the household promptly.

No girl has ever told him that she liked him. He wasn’t that type of guy. He was plain, simple and he liked to joke around. Was this some kind of joke? If it was, it certainly wasn’t funny. He wandered through the plaza back and forth, pacing here and there. He had to find her. Did she leave the territory or stay? Oliver pondered the idea of telling her uncle, but this was pretty much a secret from everyone… No one knew about them seeing each other or the events that lead up to their newborn friendship.

Athena had managed to find a wooden bus stop bench to take shelter under. Quietly she hummed a song to herself, wishing the storm easy passing... that it would not get worse then the fat rain clouds. Her mind was filled with one thing when she feel asleep, or rather one person. The Rain lured her to that happy fuzzy place we all reach when we have time, but the sound of a dogs barking brought her back to reality. Athena couldn't stay just anywhere... she needed to talk to someone, perhaps she was just.. making a mess of things. A mistake.

In that moment Athena made the most rational decision she had in quite awhile. She would find her mother, tell her all and seek advice. Then she would proceed accordingly. And hope, that she hadn't screwed everything up royally.
