Unity = Good
Exactly.
I think its great that everybody gets along.

Idead. Back when the subcultures started- they hated each other, but it seems like they realized they were all after the same thing- just in different ways.
I really like that the way you say it you almost sound like you're talking about religion... They really are all after the same thing. Except, I don't think they're all done hating each other yet. cry

More a life philosophy than a relgion... They just have different attitudes and they kind of clash- but for a laid back, an angry, and a depressed attitude to harmonize at all is pretty amazing.

The Essence of Evil

Have you noticed that many of the people in the teenage generation now who fit the hippie idealology the most are kids in the punk/metal/goth crowd.

We have this head shop in my town- Starship, which was a total hippie shop. They still sell "novelty" bongs and s**t. Anyways, the only people who shop there now are either old stoners or metalheads/punks/goths.

Ironic considering Hippies are usually about positive vibes. Although the thing each of these subcultures have in mind is open-mindedness and ******** the mainstream (even if not in those words).

Also, one of my friends and I are both pretty much hippies, but he's a metalhead and I'm a goth (no, I'm not even one of those Mansonite posers either!).

Do you think this could work?
Are you glad the subcultures are finally getting along?
Do you understand this?

Also, about 6 in every 7 goths I meet is a hippy.

It's a recurring pattern, actually.

Every 35 years or so.

It started with Abraham Lincoln making Yosemite National Park the first in the world (although it was unofficial), then there was another surge when Theodore Roosevelt became president, which began to fade about 10 years later, then there was another surge in the mid 1930's, then it died down quickly and there was a 30-year period where almost no books published even MENTIONED conservationism, followed by the next surge, probably the most recognized, in the 70's, which gave way to tons of rock and lots of new s**t in the 80's, followed by the logical and mildly successful 90's, and now, since 2005, the surge is coming back, mostly among the so-called "antisocial" groups.

I looked into the subject personally, based off something my grandmother mentioned, followed by research from multiple sources published between the 21st and 20th centuries, all with 5 to 10 years between when they were published (this was done for best results), so this is actually fairly accurate crap that I'm telling.

Eh, it's not the case everywhere, I know quite a few people around my age- 15, and they are actual proper hippies, not just stoners, etc. And the majority of them can't stand metal music.

It is kind of sad though, a lot of the hippies died out- as in, there just isn't as many these days, and now there is this sort of... half-strength sort of trend going on, and you were right in saying that a lot of punks and what have you are sort of mixing with the hippie genre... But then just hanging around here I noticed that there are still plenty of true hippies around!

I guess since ah... well music has changed a lot over the years and well, metal and screamo etc is a lot more acceptable than it once might have been, it's kind of become mainstream. So I guess... that's probably why you get hippies who don't totally conform to the stereotype. But hey, that's individuality. *thumbs up*

I for one can't stand screamo music at ALL, I mean, the heaviest stuff I listen to are Tool, and they are more alternative, and they don't scream, if but a bit of yelling here and there. Otherwise I'm all for soft happy music. I don't think it really matters what sort of music you listen to really, but... it's kinda sucky when people listen BAD music. I mean, I hate screamo and metal and all, but I think some of it can be considered to be decent music, aside the awful vocals.

It's music by those bloody... skanky bleached blonde popstars wearing tiny outfits who don't even write their own songs that really get on my nerves. So long as it's actual decent music, I don't give damn. Well, that was quite a speech!!

in my opinion its good and bad! Well ya unity is awsome, but... WE DONT NEED ANY MORE NEGATIVE VIBES! I have some goth/punk friends, but sometimes their not about being peaceful and happy, quite the opposite!

That reminds me of the episode of South Park, with the Hippie Jamfest. They scare away the hippies by playing a Slayer CD, because hippies can't stand death metal. "this music is so angry, it's killing my buzz". xd

But, you're right. Most hippies nowadays have more diverse musical tastes. I know a guy who's favorite band besides Phish is Opeth. And I have another hippie friend who is into hip-hop.

Maybe it's because more styles are avaiable now then there were in the 60's, so people have a lot more options and can be more open-minded.

I saw it too!
So did my brother so he downloaded a bunch of Slayer and started blasting it. stare
I hate metal, it hurts my ears.
Especially when it's loud!

I agree that being a hippie is a lifestyle and a state of mind, not necessarily belonging to any one 'clique.' But, that state of mind is a positive state of mind, a carefree and conscious state of mind. People can listen to whatever kind of music they want to, but to me, music really affects how you think, which is why I doubt how much people who listen to angry music are really in a postive frame of mind . . . but that doesn't make them bad people! It's just a part of who they are, and that's wonderful! If everyone in the world were the same, there wouldn't be all kinds of different people to accept and love! smile

It sucks when everyone is the same.

I choose my friends based on their personalities, not by what they dress up in.

I don't like to call myself a hippy, but I fit the stereotype pretty snugly.

Every one says I'm a wanna be hipie because I don't wear tye die shirts, and ripped bell bottoms all the time. Dude, who cares?!? Being a hippie is a state of mind, a way to live life. It's not about certain styles.

I'm probably the only person who considers herself a hippie (and IS one, I suppose) for a hundred miles in any direction. (Damn you, midwest! You're such an a**!)

There's this kid that sits next to me in Study Hall. He's okay, I suppose; I waste a lot of time making faces at him to try and make him laugh, or drawing grotesque pictures of him to see his expression, so I guess we get along.
Anyway, I've got a very diverse fashion sense, and I first met him when he waved at me and called me a dirty hippie...I bowed. Now, when I came in dressed in classical hippie garb, he hissed 'You look like a hippie today!'
"Go figure," I whispered back. "I am one."
"No you're not," he said.
"By whose standards? I'm a vegetarian pacifist democratic-socialist, and I shagged John Lennon in a past life."
He didn't answer, but today, I came in dresseed in simple black. He leaned over and said "Oh good! You don't look like a hippie today."
-_- "You're not looking hard enough," I said.

Purrrrrlezze. sad

I would consider myself once to be labled 'goth', when I was younger.
Still being as creative as am now, I think of myself happier, though.
I do agree with you, though. The only 'hippy people' that are at my school is me, and my boyfriend, a few of our friends. Then there are people who like to wear bell bottoms and hippy cloths but are for Bush.
kindof like throwing people into a bucket and shakeing them up, then dressing them like dolls.
<_< ..Kindof.
