I live in a treefort, located in a deciduous forest, within walking distance of the ocean and a college campus. I have a large veggie/fruit garden on my mother's property an hour's bus ride away, another small garden half an hour's busride away, and I get everything else I need for free on the college campus (internet, food lying about the place, rec room activities, free wash/dry, ect). I'm doing well, and am almost totally self sufficient, aside from having meat, which I'm getting to soon (I'm in the process of building a chicken coop out there).
Discuss: What you've accomplished towards self sufficiency. What your goals to further this path are. Your treehouse stories. How much of a bum I am. xD

I've never been totally self sufficient, but, I have lived in a treehouse, even if just for the summer. And once a trailer. The horses would rub their bottoms on the house at night and shake the entire thing. I slept through it, but apparently kept hitting my friend mumbling to stop the shaking. Yep, can pretty much sleep through anything. cool I could never be fully self sufficient as I wouldn't be able to kill my own meat. sweatdrop I now have a garden for food. Unfortunately it's not enough for full day to day living - we still buy produce from the store. Though, it was my first year, so I think I did good. (And my significant other is a man of convenience.) We have a well and a septic tank which I love. It makes me feel really responsible for what I use and what is put down the drain. (And we have a healthy tank as it makes a lot of heat and melts the snow.) Unfortunately we are not able to put more into our current house as we have plans to move. We live in an area of Big Box Commercialism, so hippy dippy granola pads aren't high on a seller's house list. We would very much like to have a floating home next. Septic tank, spring or well water and hopefully geothermal energy.

I kinda wanna build a commune in the middle of nowhere. I just wanna design a community.
Unfortunately, it's not like a video game where I can just earn enough points to attract a bee-keeper, and attract more people to help with the harvest, simply by offering them crowded living conditions in my hippy-dippy hideaway.
But it'd be super cool to try.
I think if I lived alone I might get a pet cerval or something xd No It'd probably be mistaken for a mountain lion. A Savannah cat would be neat, though. I'm a dog man, but the bigger cats and hybrids actually act very much like dogs, I hear.
But they can be potty trained.

i wanna live in a tree sound awesome.
but a community would be great what if you went to somewhere like say texas, where you can buy a lot of land for cheap..(compared to rest of nation)..and pay for it quickly by haveing all the members co buy it??
then you could have different people doing differnt things, instead of everone trying to do everthing.

The problem is getting all the permits... houses are on thing, but to run the facilities and stuff, and keep the permits for all that stuff.... So it's also sorta important to go to an area that is somewhat lax... I suppose. That can come and bite you in the a**, though.

You're doing well. surprised My friend lives on a tugboat, I always thought the idea of boatlife was neat. I might try it someday. My treehouse's location is actually illegal, but it's on trust land so nobody's going to do anything with it. I keep the area clean and tidy, so even if a ranger or someone came out to see what was up, I know they're all a bunch of hippies out here and wouldn't mind. Tons of people live in the woods here.

Sakakikala I WANNA TREE FORT! >w< That would be sooo kewl! =P And I could be completely self sustaining on the cheap, as to I'ma vegan... =P It's cheaper than having the meat issue, but it's also more tedious in knowing everything you need. I was a vegan for a few years and it was rough, since I was on the road trying o stay healthy. But I did it.

Very true that it's not like a videogame. haha I'd suggest joining a commune temporarily to get a feel for how they work. There's tons of them that have 1 year trials. Look into it. They are a lot like dogs, except the training is a lot more strenuous. Good luck on that, mate.
