Today Avenged announced that Mike Portnoy will be drumming on the upcoming album.
On February 17, 2010, Avenged Sevenfold stated that they had enetered the studio, along with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, to drum for the record, in place of the Rev. "I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy's all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are ******** excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."
So he isn't going to be their Permanent drummer, just drumming on this album. Any thoughts on how it might go, or about the bands choice?

Even though he's the revs favorite drummer, it'll be hard to replace the rev. The rev was a great drum player, and a great singer, it won't be the same, but I'm happy to see that they're going to try and move on.

Mike Portnoy is a fantastic drummer. By far the best thing about Dream Theater. But it will be tough to fill Jimmy's shoes. But Jimmy wanted this album to come out for his fans. I will dearly miss his vocals more than anything. And agreed, I'm also happy they're trying to move on.

Agreed, I think it will be strange to listen to the new album without Jimmy's vocals because his voice was contributed into so many of the songs, but also now we won't have anymore of his lyrical contributions either.

It'll be weird to not hear Jimmy's voice and drum skills on the album, but at least Avenged Sevenfold isn't giving up. This will be twice as amazing because though he won't be drumming, this will just inspire all of them that much more. At least they chose a drummer with meaning to Jimmy.

Since Portnoy was Jimmy's idol, I doubt it's going to be TOO different than what we've already heard.
Truly, the only big differences are his singing, and the chemistry with the bandmates. Being childhood friends just can't be replaced.

Dream Theaters bass is crazy to, noting panic attack...

It's going to to be odd, that's forsure. But It was one of his favorite drummers, and the fact Mike is willing to contirbute to it makes it worth while. I'll prolly break down after listening to it tohugh. out of happyness, but also for the lack of Jimmy behind the drum tracks, and no more vocals. I'm so excited for the release nevertheless
