The Human Southland

By: Miyuki Aldrich

Like the name says, the Human Southland is a country in the south where all the humans live. Unlike Gaia where all the races visit each other, it is rare that elves visit the Human Southland or that humans visit any of the elven countries. While their land is in the south, it isn’t near the desert so they do get snow in the winter, but probably not as much as the Borderlands. The ground is also really tough so certain places are not that great for farming.

Here, the country is ruled by a king. Unlike Amon Darthir where the ruler could be a king or queen, the throne can only be passed to a man. Though the king is supposed to look after all his subjects, Emile suggested that the king doesn’t pay attention to towns and villages farther away. Though, the size of the Human Southland is larger than Amon Darthir (which only has one city) and Nauros (which only has a small village).

Humans of Arda are very different from the humans of Gaia. First, they only have one type of human, and one language. Unlike Gaia where there are many types of humans and they all have their own language. Secondly, humans of Arda do not use magic and cannot use magic according to the other grownups.

Humans of Arda and elves do not get along well with each other. Elves do not like the humans because of some would steal their kids for slaves. There is also dislike because of a war that happened a long time ago and the humans did nothing to help the elves. Humans do not like the elves because the elves invaded their land to look for the kids. Invaded is when someone else comes into your land to take it over, and even though the elves didn’t take the Human Southland over, most humans felt that the elves didn’t have a good reason for coming like they did.

Shiro says that countries will always try to make themselves sound better, it unites a country when they have someone to dislike.

Human Southland Isn’t Fun

I’m really starting to not like being in the Human Southland at all. We were attacked by humans outside of this small town.

It was the most scary thing ever, even scarier when we were stopped on the ship coming back from Nauros. Even though I was hiding really, really well, I could hear all the metal clanging and the people screaming, and the blood. The blood was like smelling copper, only copper smells a lot better than blood. It smelled awful.

A lot of the humans ran away after Amalirahc and his family suddenly joined in. Of course, anyone who saw a large dragon or roc would run off. Still, it was awful and there was just a lot of bodies and blood.

I think it would have been worse if they hadn’t shown up. Even mommy had to fight and she normally doesn’t fight even though she knows how to. Hopefully, we won’t have to go through that again.

The Westland

By: Miyuki Aldrich

The Westland is home of the light elves. Mommy says that when the elves were first created the light and dark elves lived together, but because the dark elves looked different the two races began to live separately. Though, if they were both created together and use to have one language (Ancient Tongue), I guess technically that means they’re one race but different cultures. Today though, the elves live separate (except in the Eastland) and the Westland elves speak Common Elvish. Even though we weren’t there during winter, I’m told that it snows in the Westland too. How much, depends on where you are in the Westland, some places have more snow than others.

The Westland elves really like nature and try to make it a part of the buildings whenever they can. All the houses have a garden, and many houses have ivy growing on them. Even their carving and their jewellery making has a lot of plants in the design.

The Westland capital is Chansond'eau and the home of King Eregon and Queen Amalthea. Like the Human Southland, the Westland is a Monarchy ruled by kings. The capital city is very large with a huge marble bridge that leads into it. Ada mentioned that the last king was very proud and he built his city to impress others.

Unlike the Human Southland, the Westland is much friendlier. Though I noticed unlike Amon Darthir or Nauros people seemed to stare at us who weren’t elves. Ada said it’s because some places are more accepting than others.

Missing Amon Darthir

I know the point of traveling is to see everything and meet new people, but sometimes I miss Amon Darthir. I miss my friends, they’re much nicer than most of the kids here in the capital. My friends at Amon Darthir didn’t care I have tails or fox ears, and asked me to play right away. Even the adults are nice and will talk to me as long as they aren’t busy.

It’s different here though… People here aren’t as friendly, they’re polite, but not friendly. Sometimes they stare a bit too much at mommy and ada. There was this one kid, Darren, and he was really mean. Amalirahc, River and I went to play ball with the other kids, but Darren wouldn’t let me play. At first, I thought he was just confused by what I was, but then he made it sound like I wasn’t a person because I wasn’t from one of the three races.

Or maybe he thought I wasn’t a person because I’m not an elf.

That made Amalirahc really angry and he got into a fight with Darren. Even though I was worried Amalirahc was going to get into trouble, I’m happy he won the fight.

Mommy once said that kitsunes could change into humans to blend into the crowd. Sometimes I wish I could do that too, but I think I would miss my tails too much to do that.

The Eastland

By: Miyuki Aldrich

The Eastland was once the home of the dwarves until they lost a war which sent them all to the North. Both light and dark elves moved to this place and began to live together in peace. Today, besides the Borderlands, the Eastland is the only place where light and dark elves live together and have families.

Because of this, Common Tongue is the language used most often in the Eastland, but a lot of people also know both High Elven and Common Elven at the same time. The Eastland wasn’t always a country, it used to be just a bunch of towns and cities around the area. King Estel and Queen Lothiriel are the first king and queen of the Eastland and its current rulers. Though I don’t know how the title is passed down, I suspect that it can be passed to either male or female.

The Eastland is located in desert terrain where the climate is hot and dry. A lot of the foods we ate in the Westland, Borderlands and even on Amon Darthir and in Naruros cannot be found there. The meals were mostly of vegetables that were well spiced, and when we did have meat it was very small animals. The hot climate also affects what is made there and how people dress. Even though it’s hot, people here don’t dress like the people on Nauros. They do try to cover their skin as much as possible to prevent sun burns. The women with black hair also cover their heads with light scarves so their heads won’t get too hot.

Magic Evolution

When Miyuki wanted to learn more about aura sensing (and to an extent magic sensing) she was only interested in how it was done. She had only thought about it the technique in terms of being able to sense who was there and if anyone was coming towards her. This at the time made sense, while she had extra sensitive hearing, it was no match for the soundless walk of elves. Even though her blind quarterstaff instructor seemed to have no issues in telling who was coming or going.

Of course her instructor’s hearing was even more sensitive than Miyuki’s and that was saying something! Miyuki tried of course, her instructor would have whamped her upside the head hard if she didn’t at least try to get around blind. While the young kitsune understood the theory of how to get around by listening, the practice was much more difficult. Even with her ability to turn her ears in the direction of a particular sound, it was hard to for her to tell the difference between a wall and a person. She could not tell the slight changes in sound no matter how long she listened. Though she could tell after a while the difference between the rustle between leaves and clothes and hear the whistling of a staff as it cut through the air, it only paled in comparison to what her instructor could do.

So it was only natural that when Miyuki heard it was possible to sense other people’s presence by aura or magic sensing, she wanted to give that a try too. It was a bit unusual seeing as all the other elves took that concept for granted, but for Gaians magic was often learned and her mother was not the most magically adept Gaian in Arda, or in Gaia for that matter. The result was Miyuki asking her father, the other elves and even the nekos about the concept. With a bit of help, she had begun learning about aura sensing, but never really understood what it fully entailed.

Until she met her Grandfather Daemon, she didn’t realize how overwhelming the process was, or that it was just the beginning to an even larger subject matter.

Daemon Winters was a living library of knowledge about magic. Not just in the theory, but in the practical use and exercises that went along with it. It was the kind of knowledge that was rare in Arda. Miyuki already knew about Gifts, she had one or two herself, and had seen magic done by her ada and her mother, but she had never really seen Gaian magic, or learned magic. Sure, she understood the concept of runes, but never gave much more thought to it other than the fact it could make bags hold far more than humanly possible.

So when her great-grandfather explained more to her about the use of magic and what it was and what it could do she was completely fascinated. When she first began meditation for mages and magic sensing, she became enthralled.

Sensing magic was an incredible experience. It was more than just sensing the presence of another magical being. It was sensing magic itself, and everyone’s magic felt different like blends of spices and teas that made up who they were and what they could do. It was distinct and often mild, except for Lancaeriel. Lancaeriel’s magic was like the hottest spices mixed together and made into a fine dust. It caused Miyuki to feel like she was set on fire and would leave her coughing and her eyes watering. The young kitsune learned very quickly not to do meditation around or near Lanceriel lest she get a good breath in of Lancaeriel’s fiery magic. Fire elves had nothing on Lanceriel’s magic.

Still, when it was all said and done, Miyuki found something that she wanted to learn all about. It hasn’t yet occurred to the little kitsune that magic could be used for combat, but perhaps in time she would consider it.

Then again with Miyuki, one never knew.

The Southland

By: Miyuki Aldrich

The Southland (or actually the Elven Southland) is the home of the Dark Elves. Mommy said that the Dark elves and the Light elves all lived together at one point, and then the Dark elves left to prevent fighting because the Light elves didn’t like them. Shiro also says that the body adapts to its surroundings like the skin tanning to prevent burning out in the sun. So the term Dark elf is probably a comment on their hair and not their skin colour because their skin was probably as light as the Light elves at one point.

Unlike the Westland, the Southland is ruled by a Queen, and the throne runs through the female line. The royal family in the South is very large compared to the other families (even though all three are related to the Aldrich line by being married or by blood).

Even though the Southland is a desert, it doesn’t hold the exact same climate as the Eastland. In the Southland there are more clouds and in the very, very rare occasion it has rained according to the books in the library. This is because in the Southland, there is about a thousand year cycle where the desert will become a forest, and after another cycle the forest will become a desert again.

This makes me wonder if the food is different once more things grow in the forest cycle. At least where the capital city is (which is near a river), there is more meat at meal times than in the Eastland, but a lot of the same fruits and veggies grow in the Southland.
