Dont act like you dont know whats up ninja
I first noticed this when i was in Spanish 3 in high school. We had a meeting with some other language classes in the state and one was German. There was a small group of them with trench coats and Swasticas, no one wanted to get near them.
Then I came into counter with Gaia, and again, people have the Swastica, the eagle thing, Heil Hitler, etc. on their profiles....And as soon as I see this, i write that person off as a bloody moron. confused
German languages lovers, whats up with this fad? Is the genocide of 6 million people cool now?

I have no idea why these people think it's somehow "cool" to be a Nazi. Either they truly believe in that ideology, or they're just idiots who haven't a clue of the meaning and gravity of what they're playing around with. neutral
Related: People like that kind of ruin it for me, especially because I'm part German. It's really insulting to get called out by someone for being "a nazi" just because I'm interested in German culture and the language. It's like this:
Person A: So you're learning German?
Me: Mhm. The language and culture are pretty interesting to me.
Person A: Are you German?
Me: Partly.
Person A: You have a horrible history. You people were Nazis. How is that interesting to you? Are you a Nazi or something?
Me: What the?! No! I-
Person A: -you're wearing a trench coat too! and black boots! and you wear black a lot! Freakin' nazi!
Me: stressed / evil *goes off on a harangue against the person, defends self*
---
Yeah, the fact that I like to wear trench coats really doesn't help, but you know what? It's cold outside dammit!

If I were German I'd be extremely pissed off at these guys. Germany has so much history and so many achievements, yet somehow this is the only part they're interested in. If they do believe in Neo-Nazism, and certainly some do, it has nothing to do with Germany any more. Although when it comes to teens, it feels like they're just trying to be 'rebellious' and cool.

It's because it's "edgy". Teenagers like to do things rebellious and shocking.
I think saying it's German learners is giving German learners a bad rap, though. A lot of these people don't even know anything about Germany or the German language, they just want to shock and offend.
It also should be noted I think that finding WWII interesting but acknowledging the atrocity is completely different than being a Nazi sympathiser.

I've truthfully never heard of any serious German learners that are in to that kind of stuff. Actually, one of my best friends is a Jew and he studies German. I feel really bad for the Germans though. What with the aftermath of WW 1 and 2 on them... and now everyone associates Germany with Nazis... really... A couple years ago there was a German foreign exchange student in one of my classes... -.- Jerk: "Hey, how do you say 'Jew' in German?" German: "Juden." (I think it was something like that =x) Jerk: "How do you say 'kill the Jews?'" German: "... I'm not going to answer that."

It's annoying because people often assume I'm one of these people. I'm learning German, I'm part German, I used to wear trench coats and knee high black boots every day, and I'm slightly obsessed with history (WWII and the personal lives of dictators in particular.) xp It looks bad, and I get asked if I'm a nazi a lot. I'm not a nazi though, One of my closest friends is a Jew, and I couldn't ever believe that she is less than human. But people are always questioning my motives to things because of people that do.

God, I hate people posing as/ being Nazis because it's "cool". It really pisses me off. The thing I hate the most is that a lot of them don't really know what they're talking about when they're sympathizing Hitler and " The Final Solution". We had this thing in school that was all about tolerance, to respect all kinds of people. We visited both Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück, and we met a woman that have actually been in a concentration camp. Seriously, I've never seen a whole class show so much respect to an old woman. It's one of the most incredible people I've ever talked to, simply having the strength telling people about that horrible things and over again, it's just.. wow.
Sorry if my English is bad, I usually lose my grammar when I write about these kind of stuff. xp

Yeah.. I've been called a Nazi before. Apparently I can't have pride in the fact that my family came from Bayern.
People who hold that ideology... yeah. Odinism I think is the current term they parade around under currently. Though I hope no one ever confuses that with Asatru/Vanatru/Norse Paganism.. two completely different things.
I can see why people would think that all Germany was were Nazis. The schools I went to really never mentioned anything about their history other than that. True, there's mentioning of the conversion of the north to Christianity, Mozart, and the Brother's Grimm, but most of these people are so devoid of culture or interest for it to ever stick.

I practice German in school (meaning I say "Wie geht es Ihnen?" to my friends all the time x] ), and I've been called a Nazi a couple times. I got someone to apologize, but I was still mad. People can be so ignorant when it comes to this. Just because Germany had a rough patch doesn't mean that's all it is/will be.
