The ANBU carrying Rikujin Katsurou arrived in front of the door of the Hokage.
"It's okay," Rikujin said. The jutsu that was affecting his neurological system had passed. "I can go in myself." He placed his feet on the floor and knocked upon the heavy wooden door of the Hokage's Office. He was able to get his bearings before a response was heard.
"Come in..."
It was an unfamiliar voice to Rikujin, but he entered anyway. He was presented by a rather large crowd within the cramped office. Not a single face looked happy. The Hokage wasn't present; but of course, he was on a trip to a Kage Meeting.
The most surprising faces in the crowd were that of the two Village Advisers. The two elderly shinobi had the most stern faces of them all. Rikujin didn't quite notice it, but their puffy eyes indicated that they had recently been crying. They hid their emotion well enough to speak clearly and evenly.
"Rikujin of the Katsurou Clan," The female of the two said. "We have come here to impart upon you some grave news."
Rikujin raised an eyebrow. He didn't quite understand the situation. There was a long pause in which Rikujin took his chance to look around at the faces within the room. Several of the older Jounin were looking at the floor, holding crumpled tissues in their hands. Their noses were running as their eyes watered.
The second, male elder continued. "As you know, the Hokage went away on an international diplomatic mission." He said, struggling to keep his voice level. "The Hidden Village Leaders of the Great Nations met with some of the leaders of the smaller countries in an effort to come together with some form of peace treaty.
"Negotiations seemed to be going well," The first elder continued. "But suddenly..." Her voice trailed off. She couldn't continue.
Rikujin's incredulous looks continued. "What?" He asked. "What happened?"
Not a single voice could respond. Nobody could find the words needed. "What happened!?" Rikujin said, his voice tensing. He wanted to know the answer. "Somebody tell me-"
"Lord Hokage..." A voice in the back broke in. "Your master..." The man sniffed. "He... And all of the other..." He couldn't continue.
"Will somebody just tell me what the hell happened?!?" Rikujin said, almost yelling.
"They are all dead." The male elder said.
"What do you mean?" Rikujin replied, still trying to reach an understanding of the situation. "Who are?"
"All of the village leaders..." He responded. "There was an explosion... None of them made it." There was a long pause. "Not even him..."
It took a minute for this information to sink in.
The Hokage... His master... His mentor... His role-model...
It couldn't be... Not him...
"NO!"
Tears were rolling down Rikujin's face as he dropped to his knees.
"NO NO NO!" He cried, his fist beating the floor with every word. "It's just not possible..."
Several of the shinobi in the room who had seemed to be the most composed suddenly burst into tears.
"His will..." The female elder said. "You were... The only one mentioned." She unraveled a scroll marked with the seal of fire.
I leave all of my earthly possessions to the young man who I find to be the closest thing I have ever had to a son: Rikujin Katsurou. For, I hope he can use them well as he grows into the adult that I dreamed he could be.
Rikujin was barely listening. He sobbed into the floor. He was even drooling, overcome with his grief.
They gave him almost a half-hour, hoping that he could compose himself enough to stand. He cleared his throat enough to let out a hoarse word. "Okay..."
"That's not all." The elder said. "There was a second part to his will." He began to recite.
This doesn't go with tradition. In the event that I pass away during my time as Hokage, I wish for Rikujin Katsurou to also inherit my title as Hokage. He can defend this village and its honor better than any other ninja in this village. He has inherited my Will of Fire and can carry it for the rest of his life. I should know... For I loved him like he was family.
The elder finished her recital with a tear. "We are honoring his wishes." She said. "From this day forward, you are Hokage." The two elders stepped aside, moving away from the now-empty desk at which Rikujin's sensei once sat.
Slowly, Rikujin moved forward, around the desk. He sat in his new seat. It felt too big for him.
"Hokage-sama," One of the Jounin said.
It took a second for Rikujin to realize that he was begin addressed. "Oh... Uh, yes?"
"What are your orders, sir?"
Rikujin didn't need to think. "Gather the villagers." He said with a tear. "We will honor my sensei. Prepare his funeral procession."
This was the first act of Rikujin Katsurou: Hokage. Rikujin Katsurou Hokage
