I was thinking of trying to construct a prop Railway rifle possibly for future cons, and just as something fun. Just wondering if anyone had any making tips or possible ideas for a starting point. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Railway_Rifle

What do you have acess to? What do you have in mind? If you want a hyper-realistic prop, allot of the things here can be found junk at a scrap metal yard. Next, you'll want acess to a machine or woodshop. If you want a modifyed nurf-gun. you're first trip is gonna be to the local Toys-R-Us and a few cans of spray paint. We'll get you through this step by step.

The nerf idea sounds plausible....and very do-able.

With the limited costume making experience I have, the best I can think up for weapons, if you aren't a specialist or know of one, is to built the item piece by piece.
Example: There are pretty much NO fabric stores around where I live. I had to buy random clothing, fabric and bits and pieces from goodwill stores and disassemble and re-assemble via stitching to make the costume.
That was until my friend and I discovered the local walmart had a good selection... -_-
For weapons, you can use pipes, duct tape(comes in many colors and... well, we ALL know about the powers of duct tape), odd screws and nail bits for effects or what not. Look for items that look SIMILAR to part of the object, break them down, cut, break, glue, and well... that can do it.
Or else you can always search e-bay for items on sale, or cosplay.com to find similar objects/costumes to see how they made it if they have directions up.
:: sigh :: if only there were more blacksmith's/welders in this era. Making stuff would be MUCH easier! XD

I don't want to ruin my gun's functionality.

Well, of the Railway rifle itself I was thinking of constructing it partly from PVC tubing and painting it.
