James nodded, a fair question. Very few people believed in the after life. Paladins were among the only group that could prove the existence of a life after death, having offered many souls up to the arms of... whoever.
James could also understand Fiera's lack of understanding of why. It was a fair question, why should they save the damned?

"Understandable questions." He acknowledged. "Passing on, in the terms I have been explaining, means to go to heaven, or into the arms of the lady, to go to the underworld... I dont know where they go but there is an afterlife, and thats where I send them. I clense the soul of a beast to pass on because it is not their fault." James continued, scratching his elbow. "Not always. I can't cleanse that which is their fault. Beings become corrupted by dark magic, by plague, it turns them mad, these beings are the ones that we are here to defend against. They cannot control themselves. You saw the dragon earlier... That was not a dragons mind. It did not deserve a brutal death. It deserved eternal peace, not damnation... Though many would disagree."

James sighed, he felt bad now. No friends, she should have been put in his house, people would have forced friendship upon her, not outcast her and allowed her to fend for herself.
"Does it not get lonely?" James asked.

James stepped out of the forest and looked up at the castle. "You're going to live for a long time... you could just live idly, hiding in the shadows... or you could make a difference... long after i'm gone." He said.

Feira wished she could understand as he explained his beliefs about teh after life. She wished she could take comfort from all he was saying, draw up this higher purpose for herself to make it feel like some noble gift rather than a cage, but she just couldn't, and the more he spoke, the more inadequate and confused she felt. His explanation about what the creatures deserved made her heart heavy, wondering just what she would deserve if she were in their place on the other side of his sword.

His reaction to her response about friends or loved ones confused her even more, he actually seemed concerned. Feira merely shrugged. "I learned early on it's safer to be on my own than bound to others...doesn't lead to anything but pain, in every sense of the word." She shuddered at past memories that flashed through her mind, her mouth flattening into a hard line. "Lonely is safer."

The reminder of how long she would live felt like finger nails raking down a chalk board and made the girl wince. She was a survivor, she'd live, sure, but the idea of how long that was, and how much of a fight that presented didn't appeal to her much. And his question of loneliness rubbed a wound in her heart that she had long since tried to bury.

"Whatever." She said, trying to shake off the emotions that were sneaking up on her. "Training starts this weekend? My professors are going to love how I'm even more distracted than usual...Especially Aldramor." She laughed bitterly. "He's had it out for me since first year. Doesn't like how I challenge him on the facts he teaches in history. Close minded old goat."

She looked up at James, "So how long have you been doing this? What happened to that teacher of yours? Did he graduate?" They reached the walls of the castle, stepped through the door to the courtyard within, making their way for hte library. "Can't say as I remember him, but then I'm usually in my own little world." She was trying to sound nonchalant, as if she wasn't bothered, hoping he wouldn't see through her.

"It might be safer... but its not a good life." James said, a knowing expression on his face. He had been the same, a darkness in his heart from his brothers exile... he wanted nothing to do with anyone.
Daniel had brought him out of it however. He had given him a friend... right up until the end. If Daniel hadn't asked him to continue, to find friends when... when it had happened... well he would probably still be alone.

"Yeah... anyway..." James said, agreeing to move on. "Aldramor is up for review this year... He wants everyone to know his definition of history, doesn't care about opinions so long as when people review his class they can respond with the national opinion." James was highly in the know about the school, having connections through the librarian and as the black mage of the house.

"It's been a while... my fourth year Daniel discovered me..." James admitted. "And his final day here... I killed him." James continued to walk, "just after his graduation we went to take out a warlock that had set up in the mountains... I was sloppy, got targeted by a curse, like what happened with the dragon... but Daniel pushed me out of the way... it hit him... I killed the warlock, and then I had to kill Daniel... cleansed his soul and sent him on... the worst day of my life.
