His chest rose up and down gently. A book laid sprawled on the ground next to the male's long fingers. He was curled up under a tree, asleep despite the fact that it was winter. Over him rested his jacket and curled up in a green ball, above his head, was his bonded, BlackJade. The wolf himself was awake with his head rested on his paws, watching those who passed by him. However, the guy who was lost in the land of dreams hadn't noticed a thing seeing as there was no commotion to jolt him awake. Shifting a bit, Jace buried himself further under his warm jacket.

Tail swishing, BlackJade kept quiet aside from the rustle of grass he created. He was busy pondering what this... ball, was that the humans were going to go to. He didn't know much about the event, but it seemed that his male partner didn't seemed to care to much on whether he went or not. Still, it wasn't like he hadn't gotten some hungry looks from some of the females at the fort. Actually, the shadowy wolf was pretty sure he even saw a male who looked like he wanted to devour the apprentice. It didn't make the BlackJade a happy person. Not at all.

With a small huff, the young wolf wished that his siblings were around at the moment. It would be a lot more fun then just sitting there doing nothing. Then again, when his litter mates did show up, he probably wouldn't make the effort of getting up. Yep, he was just mean like that. However, as he was musing about what he should do, a small murmur caught his ear. Ear twitching, the young one caught the faint voice of Jace talking in his sleep, "Kade." Well, StormCall certainly wouldn't be happy if she heard that.

Kade Reed walked along the perimeter of the barracks, his Bonded, StormCall, close beside him. He hadn’t been in the Fort for long, and had taken to exploring the place during his free time. Of course, it wasn’t always a good thing. Many a time, he had been accused of being a peeping tom when he had explored the barracks, and it was freezing to boot! But his curiosity was great, and besides, who knew what could happen? By sheer chance, he could heroically remove a stray centipede when no one was expecting it, save the Fort from utter destruction, impress the Alphas, and—

Kade,’ StormCall thought, looking at him pointedly. ‘Silly.

She had yet to get used to making complete sentences, and as a result, had taken to saying only a few words at a time. (She thought it was unfair that she had to learn the strange tongue when Kade didn’t even have to try and talk to her in her own wolf-language. But it couldn’t be helped, as he lacked pivoting ears and a tail, both of which were used often when conveying messages between wolves.) And with that single word, she had successfully told her Rider how utterly ridiculous his imagination was getting.

Yeah,’ he thought. He could only agree, and he smiled sheepishly in her direction. He still hadn’t fully gotten used to the fact that she could hear his thoughts whenever she pleased, and he quickly directed his thoughts towards a subject that would not result in later teasing: muffins. That’s right. Muffins. They were fluffy, came in many flavors, were delicious, and apparently healthy, too. It was a surprise they weren’t included in the Fort’s staple diet. Why, just thinking about the variety they could add (muffin tops? Bottoms? A full muffin?!) was enough to make him seriously consider sending a letter of suggestion to the Captain.

StormCall, who had stopped listening a long time ago (for she knew his sudden random burst of thought about muffins was only a result of his embarrassment, and therefore not something to be taken seriously), suddenly turned her head, nose raised. The familiar scent of her brother reached her senses, and she started off in his direction, fully intent on seeing how he far he had gotten along and, if possible, emphasize her superiority over him. But she suddenly froze, eyes wide with sudden remembrance. Her brother’s Rider was the despicable human – Ace or Face or something of the sort – who, in her opinion, sucked the life and very soul out of Kade. No, she couldn’t put her Rider through such torture. She quickly scurried off in another direction, but it was in vain, as Kade had already taken notice of the dark green wolf and his sleeping rider and had quickened his pace to greet them, leaving her with no choice but to follow.

Kade, a large smile plastered on his face, went over to the pair, eyeing Jace with curiousity. His face was calm, and although that was the expression he normally wore when he was with his peers (besides Kade himself, of course), it was different, for it lacked the forced tension and instead of making him look difficult to approach, it made him seem more peaceful. But not for long.

He put a finger to his lips and looked at BlackJade meaningfully before creeping closer. Then, with one swift movement, the jacket covering his friend was off, and he was yelling at the top of his lungs, in a sing-song sort of voice, “Rise and shine!

BlackJade raised his head from it's perch on his paws. From a distance he could spot the tan pelt of his older sister as she started for them then froze ice still. He snorted lightly. StormCall wasn't really found of his rider, but that didn't bother him. Nope, her bonded, Kane... no Kade, seemed to like Jace quite a lot. Funny how he heard the boys name only moments earlier and nearly forgot it only a matter of a few minutes. Bending his head down, the tuff of green and black fur licked his chest a few times before the blue and gray haired human reached the pairs resting area under the tree.

BlackJade flicked his tail in acknowledgement to what he knew was awaiting his partner. With a light snort that was an obvious laugh, the wolf pushed himself to his feet before Kade started to break Jace's ear drums. This was more then likely to give him a good kick.

The unknowing, and more then likely unwilling, victim had been peacefully and innocently taking a nap from his usual training with Shun. But of course his peace of mind had to be broken by none other then his best friend, Kade Reeds. All at once his jacket was whipped away from him and his ears were ringing sending him straight in a sitting position. "For the love of! Kade! Why?" he cried before grabbing the younger male and pulling him down to try and stick him in a headlock. "You had to do it the mean way didn't ya?" he mused with a jokingly angry voice. "Oh, and good morning to you too," Jace greeted his favorite blue haired male. You too, Jaden, next time warn me will ya? All he got in return was what he knew was a laugh.

Kade laughed teasingly at his friend, but it was cut short when he suddenly found himself in a headlock. Despite that, he was perfectly capable of speaking legibly, and he replied while making feeble attempts at freeing himself. “Well, you just looked so damn serene, I couldn’t help myself,” he said with a chuckle. “What’ve you been up to all this time? And why were you sleeping in the snow?” he asked, eyeing the discarded jacket a few inches away.

Before, StormCall would have immediately been on the alert after witnessing such an action (what kind of sane person laughed when his throat was made so vulnerable?), but she had come to learn that such were the odd ways of humans. “Trust,” Kade had called it. And although she did not fully understand what it meant, she knew it was something similar to the Bond she and her Rider shared, and so she didn’t even try to argue or explain to her Rider about the danger of such actions.

Instead, she turned her attention towards her brother and trotted up to him, sniffing noses with him for a moment in polite greeting. Then, she proceeded to clamber half-way onto his neck and chew on his ear, as if it served as a replacement for what she wished she could do to Jace. Ignoring the fact that it was probably bothering her sibling, but bracing herself against resistance regardless, she casually asked, ‘Brother speak?’ in an attempt to gauge how far his progress had been regarding the tiresome language the humans communicated with for the few days they had been bonded.

The only reason as to why his best friend could still talk perfectly clearly was simply because his hold on the guy was a loose one. He would never hurt Kade, and he probably could never bring himself to hurt him. “Oh great, remind me to do the same with you when you’re having a nice sleep,” Jace said jokingly. “As to why I was sleeping in the snow, I hadn’t really intended to fall asleep here. My Patron is just a demon from hell.” A sigh floated from the apprentice’s lips as his grip slacked and he went to retrieve his poor coat. Dusting off the clothing, he slipped it on him. Turning back to his favorite male, the black and green haired boy slung his arm around Kade. “So, what have you and StormCall been up to?” he asked.

BlackJade returned his elder sister’s greeting before he felt her weight on top of him. His free ear twitched slightly as teeth closed around his other ear and started to chew. Did he really have to act as the substitute when it came to Jace? It wasn’t like the guy was doing anything that bad. He flicked his tail slightly but decided against doing anything as StormCall’s actions weren’t bothering him too much. A little, the tuff of green fur replied in turn. Learning the new language wasn’t his favorite part of this whole apprentice thing, but he was doing it. That besides, it would also be nice to know what his Patron, Nightshade, was saying, cause half the time, it seemed like he was having fun being mean to him. Sister speak much? he asked in a broken sentence.

Will do,” Kade replied, just as jokingly. He lifted himself to a more proper position once Jace’s grip loosened, brushing off some snow that had clung to his uniform. Ironically, it was at the exact same time Jace had started to dust off his own jacket, but Kade didn’t seem to notice the twin gestures, as his attention was more focused on his shirt. Who knew what his Patron would do if there was a stain? He shuddered at the thought.

I know what you mean,” Kade said, sighing as well. It seemed the both of them had gotten strict Patrons, or at least they didn’t get friendly ones. It was yet another thing they had in common.

He leaned against Jace, but instead of wrapping his arm around him in return, he reached up to play absently with the male’s green locks of hair, which were bright and conspicuous against the tanned skin and the dark, surrounding hair. “Just trying to survive, really,” he said in an exasperated tone, dropping his hand to a feet or two off the ground and holding his palm out flat, facing downwards. “My Patron’s about this short, and I swear she’s worse than the centipedes,” he said, in a tone that showed how surprised he was at how someone smaller than him could invoke so much fear in him from her name alone. He shook his hand a bit, as if to emphasize, before looking up at Jace meaningfully, a brow raised in a silent inquiry of what his Patron was like.

But of course, he knew he was exaggerating. It was better than having a lax teacher who was too friendly or careless to teach him the necessary skills to survive his first year as a Rider, and, really, his Patron was only a few inches shorter than himself. But exaggeration could be funny, and he hoped his vehemence was enough to get Jace to laugh, as a small apology for waking him up in such a rough manner, although he knew Jace wouldn’t get mad at him for something like that.

StormCall speaks lots!’ she thought to her brother enthusiastically, tail wagging. She stopped chewing on his ear and batted his head with a paw in a playful gesture. She was much more willing to tussle with him now, although she rarely did so when they were in the den, because she didn’t see him as often. Their other siblings had gone off to the other human gathering area – the Fort of New Leaves? – although EmberFall, another of their siblings, had come with them.

She paused and glanced at her Rider swiftly, to ensure his safety. He seemed to be in a much safer posture and, reassured, she turned back to BlackJade. But not before she caught a glimpse of the blonde, blue-eyed female in her Rider’s mind. She was his supervisor of sorts, and StormCall thought they got along pretty well. At the very least, she and ShadowSong, the female’s Bonded, were well acquainted.

How is parent?’ she asked, now curious about her brother’s Patron. To others, her sentence may have sounded off – how would BlackJade know? Neither of them had had contact with their parents since they had left the den – but to her, it made perfect sense. “Parent” was what she called Patrons, as the two things were one and the same to her. They both took care of those under their wing, so to speak, and taught them the necessary skills to live. Kade had insisted on referring to them as “teachers,” but there was no difference as far as she was concerned, and so she stuck to her chosen word.

Not bothered by the fingers twisting themselves in his hair, Jace simply shifted a bit to put Kade in a more comfortable position. Surviving, ya, that was something all of them were trying to do. If it weren’t for the visual Kade gave, he would probably be sighing. Instead his hand shot to his mouth as he started cracking up. “Nice Patron you got there,” the green banged boy managed to squeeze out of him. “My Patron is like the devil. And I swear, I think he still doesn’t know my name. Really, it’s a four letter word. J-A-C-E. Jace,” the apprentice stressed out his name. “Well, at least I know he’s got smarts. I’ll probably actually learn something during the nine months I get to spend under him,” Jace said with a huff.

The tuff of green fur snorted quietly when his sister said she spoke a lot. She didn’t seem to be speaking at a level any higher than him. Not that he could put the thought into words. Getting his head bobbled around, the male wolf swiped at his sister’s head himself. When StormCall turned her head to check on her rider, BlackJade waited patiently. Finally she focused her attention on him again and started asking a question that confused him at first.

Parent? he asked with a confused look on his face. He hadn’t seen his mother or father in a bit but it was obvious that his brown furred sister wasn’t asking about their parents. Who were BlackJade and Jace with who might be considered a parent. Diving into the abyss of his mind, the adolescence could come upwith only one wolf, Nightshade. His bonded had call Nightshade something else. Not a parent but a patoron? Poter? A, teacher? Was that the easier word that he used to call Nightshade?

Shaking his head, BlackJade racked his brain for a word to describe Nightshade. He’s mean and..., the wolf paused, racking his brain for the word, Tough His sister didn’t look anything like him and didn’t even know who his- porkton... no- teacher was. This way, if Nightshade happened to pass by Kade and StormCall, nothing bad could happen to him because of her.

Alexis was taking her small playful wolf pup out for a walk around the camp as she tried to talk to him - get him to learn a few words, at least one word, other than 'play.' He was cute, she'd give him that, but he seemed a bit... Slow. Maybe that was just her opinion and he was actually progressing at a normal pace - she wouldn't know, she hadn't really talked to a whole lot of other wolf riders about their wolf's progress. Hell, she hadn't even gotten a Patron yet!

AmethystWind could tell that Alexis wasn't really paying attention. She ranting about something new that he didn't understand in her mind. It took him a minute to realize it, but he could... Sense someone familiar? No, that wasn't it. He smelled it! He smelled two familiar scents! Excitedly, he stood at attention for a moment, his tail out, nose pointed, one leg up. Before Alexis even noticed what was happening, Ammy had begun to barrel away, running straight into his older sister, StormCall.

'Ammy? Ammy!' She thought as she saw the purple ball running away. She chased after the male pup, stopping in front of two men. She looked at each of them, recognizing one of them at once. "Oh hey, Jace. Sorry for uh, Ammy. Umm, hi, I'm Alexis." She said, shifting her focus from Jace to the unknown man next to him.

Yeah,” Kade agreed with a sigh. “Let’s just—.

The sight of a purple wolf running at them and crashing straight into StormCall cut him off. He half-stood, worry clear on his face, and would have gone to assess the damage were he not stopped by StormCall’s obviously pleased response. She didn’t seem to be hurt and, if anything, probably knew the wolf (another of her siblings? They sure were varied in fur color), so he slid back against the tree, relieved.

A Rider soon appeared (most likely the purple wolf’s Bonded), and he thought he recognized her from the academy and as one of the people who had gone with him and Jace to meet StormCall and her siblings in order to bond. But he hadn’t spent much time with people besides Jace, and she was unfamiliar to him, although she seemed to know Jace, which surprised him.

He shook his head in response. “It’s StormCall you should apologize to, but I don’t think she minds,” he said, glancing at her again. He smiled at the sight of her, for her childish play was enough to remind him that, despite her huge size, she was still a young wolf. “My name’s Kade. Nice to meet you, Alexis,” he said, turning his smile to the Rider and offering an outstreched hand.

StormCall gave an empathetic whine in response to BlackJade's description, tail swishing as she thought of her “parent” and real parents. They had been kind, but strict, too, and had rarely allowed them from the den. Although that had seemed cruel when she was younger, it was nothing compared to what she and her brother, would eventually have to go through.

A familiar scent reached her nose, and as soon as she stood to greet her brother, she found that he had already barreled into her. Giving a mock growl, which grew broken and almost squeaky in her undeveloped state, she lunged back at him, batting at his ears and occasionally choosing to lightly chew on a leg. She lowered her forepaws and waved her tail like a banner for a moment, turning to BlackJade, inviting him to join the two of them, before returning her attention to her “foe.” She grew excited, for it had been a while since she had last seen this brother, and thought to practice her speaking some more.

Name?’ she inquired. Wolves did not name themselves or their pups. There was no need to, for they recognized each other by scent. But humans, although strong in their own ways, had weak senses, and gave their Bonded a name as soon a connection was formed. As a result, she knew none of her sibling's names until they told her, and she was curious.

Jace, in all his green glory, looked up to be met with the slight of a bright purple wolf shooting over towards their wolves happily. Pulling his friend back down, he wrapped an arm around him again, liking the warmth radiating of of Kade. It was around that time that the female partner of the hyperactive wolf showed up. "Hey, Alexis. How are you doing?" the male asked with a smile. It hadn't been too long since they last saw each other, but hey, he didn't keep tabs on what the heck she was doing.

BlackJade greeted his younger sibling with a gentle nuzzle of his muzzle before joining in their play fighting. He, though he would never admit it out loud, missed all his siblings very much. Yes, they came from a rather large litter.

Sitting on his hind legs, he looked curiously at his younger brother. He too wondered what name he had gotten. He had learned that their names often took after their physical appearance. His bonded had told him that his name, BlackJade, was due to his black and green fur. 'Jade', was a stone Jace used to describe his green appearance.
