I'd really like some tips to make my whites pop more.. ._. I thought using a blue base would help-- but they still look dindgy.

Also, I think I'm putting too MANY lines in hair now-- thoughts?

Oh jes-- would love some tips on getting metal to look like... metal. o-O;;;

Danka in advance for any feedbacks heart

The best way to make the whites pop out more is to use less of it, and contrast it more with a darker color.

Example. Notice how when the actual lighting is more dim, the small spotlights of white actually contrast more with the rest of the colors.

Example 2. With metal, it's all about the concentrations of light rather than trying to lighten up every place where the light may hit. Metal is also highly reflective, so it might be a good idea to put some reflected light of the pink background in.

Personally, I think the hair looks fine, but yes you might be adding too many lines. It gives a more hard feeling as a result, instead of soft curls. With hair, just shade general areas that aren't hit by light, and then work some hair strokes in to indicate it is indeed a hair-like texture. Just don't go nuts with it.

Hope it all helps.

Maybe it's just your style, but I personally don't like the nose. I'd give the base of the nose more of a triangular shape (with the upper part being the "tip") than a rectangular shape. I'd also have it lead to under the eyebrows, not to above the eyes... unless she's supposed to look like a cat or some other animal. The darkness of the lower part of the nose also adds to the animal-like appearance... I don't mean that as an insult if it wasn't intended, but that's how it looks to me. Also, the forehead gem is centered with the eyes, but not with the nose, which I think looks off.

I think the hair looks fine.

Like Kupocake said, you have to have more contrast if you want the whites to stand out more. Don't smoothly blend the colours into it.

I think the breasts seem weird... Something about the shape, but I can't say for sure since I'm no expert on it. I think the shading makes them look like flaps, though. I'd shade the lower half of the breasts and make the roundness more evident. Under the vest, to be more specific.

I was gonna say the arms seem long, but I'm not sure... they seem about right. I guess I'd make the armpits evident.

There are some many nice details in this picture.

Face kinda looks like a tan colored Na'vi from Avatar. No offence, just saying thats what came to mind.

Thanks everyone. I'll try to address points by person~

@Kupo: Thank you! Those links were very nice to see. > w < I think you are right-- I like to blend everything together till its a gradient-- I need to get out of that habit.

@Zan: I'm currently attempting to learn how to draw noses that stray from anime style-- mine tend to come out wanting to show ALL the parts. It's a major work in progress for me. The nose-- it alludes me! > w < So no, not a style-- just a major area of work for me~ I actually took out the original nose that was lineart and wanted to try and just paint it in along with the lips. Hopefully I'll get better at it soon. smile No insults. Everyone pretty much said she looked like some form of animal. lol!

@Staple: ell-oh-ell. :< I hate Avatar. I have to make sure I don't draw that again. xD <3 Thanks!

Thank you everyone, you were all incredibly helpful! I like coming here so much more than PP now... people really belittle each other in there unless you're one of the inside circle O_o;; The guild is so much more positive about pointing things out 3nodding heart

Thanks!!

Well, it's hard to really "avoid" the sorts of noses you'd see in anime/manga. Different artists will have different styles. Some will show the nostrils, others won't, some will show the bridge of the nose, others won't, etc. Examples:

I forgot the word "bridge" when I wrote my previous critique, so I wrote "base"... but what I meant to say is that the bridge/outline of the nose gets smaller as it goes up. Here's a really crappy MS Paint edit:

lol Thank you, Zan. smile I adore he-no-he faces xD

See, I used to draw the example you listed as "Naruto" noses. Just the two nostrils, but then got in trouble for not being "realistic" enough-- so now I'm trying to incorporate more of my figure drawing in with my normal style-- and its coming out all fudged looking. o//o...

Maybe I just need to say screw it and keep 'anime' noses in with the 'anime' style-- because what I'm TRYING to do obviously isn't working. xD

Its all one big work in progress. > w < Thank you for nose examples~

Haha, reading "he-no-he faces" made me laugh at them even though I was able to draw them with a straight face.
I think the nostrils from the "Naruto" noses is a good idea, just you have to make sure the shading shows the shape of the nose if you don't have clear lines doing so. I think you had the right idea in your picture, just the shape of the nose was weird and you had the tip of the nose dark when it would likely be light. I'm sure you'll be able to find your answer if you keep at it a little more. I suppose the obvious thing to do would be look up pictures of people - any people - and try to draw noses like they have. If you want the middlegrounds between "attractive anime character" and "real person with a much larger nose in comparison", then you could specifically look up celebrities for nose references since they'd probably have smaller noses.
