...Most of the party members are useless? (story wise)
Penelo... Vaan... seriously... why do they exist?!
It's clearly visible that Square Enix actually DID consider having Basch as the main character... Vaan/Penelo looks like something they threw into the story in the last year... they are there... but they are useless... everywhere... but still... useless... =_=

I'm just glad ff12 wasn't another sappy love story I liked Penelo for her magic stats and equipping her with really big weapons but storywise she and Vann aren't visable lol

The characters are covering all bases of Ivalice. Vaan and Penelo represent the common people who got the short end of the stick from the Empire's take over.
And they exist because if it wasn't for Vaan, none of that s**t would have happened. He was the one who brought everyone together, after all.

But really, I would have preferred his brother!!! His brother, even though only used for 5 min, was a fun character to use! Why couldn't Vaan be the one fighting in the war and his brother be the one to actually instigate the story! Vaan only seems importent in the beginning, barely, and then afterwords Balthier, Basch, Fran, Ashe, and every support character you get has more importance than Vaan. His only use seemed to be getting his a** handed to him by various support characters and random falling debris.
Penelo at least was interesting and had some relevance in the story beyond the opening, and she was a pretty good character.

Oh, I liked Reks better, too... but if you just switched the two, we'd probably end up feeling the same way about Reks as we do about Vaan. sweatdrop In fact... I think it might be better than Reks died so early. He served his purpose, and he didn't have the opportunity to become useless like Vaan did. I understand why they have Vaan and Penelo in there; I just don't think it's a good enough reason. Yeah, they have parts where they're important, but most of the time, they are just hanging around. As for the "common people" thing... Well, it's not like picking main characters for a video game is like equal opportunity employment. confused You pick characters because they'll be good characters, not just because they're something different.
To be entirely fair, though, this isn't exclusive to just Vaan and Penelo. It's happened to other Final Fantasy characters before. *coughquinacough*

And it also applies to words and insults in the games, *coughchicken-wusscough* Nearly everything seifer from ff8 said was really stupid, its like they got yelled at for all the &%*$%^* from ff7, and got a 5th grader to convert the insults into 5 year old insults. =.=
