Darcy sat on her usual perch, wrapped in her usual green sweater. The weather was better now, but only slightly. She kept her eyes on the entrance of the cave, an unreadable expression on her face.
Aaron had taken to holding the infant; having wrapped the zurg boy in a blanket. Darcy was being especially quiet tonight; but then she had been tired as of late. He hoped the parent would come soon, despite the desire to keep the baby with them. The sooner the guardian arrived, the sooner he could make sure Darcy got some rest.

The crisp air helped to cool the sweat that beaded on Mort's forehead as he huffed and puffed along. It was all too easy in the night air to believe that the whole, 'We want you to be a parent,' thing was a dream. The paper in his pocket crinkled reassuringly, keeping Mortimer from giving up on his trek. Why wasn't there a nice road or parking lot or something that the adoption or whatever could have been held at? The man paused to wipe his forehead with the sleeve of his denim shirt.
Taking a deep breath, Mort forced himself to continue walking. Casting a nervous glance at the night sky, the middle aged man picked up his pace. Time would be tight enough as it was.
Finally Mortimer made it to the cave that the letter had directed him to. "Hello?" he called out tentatively as he approached the entrance.

Aaron stood to greet the future guardian, holding the infant with both arms to make sure he was secure. "Mortimer, right? I am Aaron, and this is my sister Darcy," he gestured to the girl on the rock. "Come inside, I assure you it is more comfortable." He should have brought refreshments! The poor man seemed so tired. "Sit down, sir, and we'll answer any questions you have," he gestured to the rock he had been sitting on while holding the sleeping infant.
"Oh," Aaron said in after thought, "this is your son." Damn, Darcy was rubbing off on him. He needed to stop being so blunt. He needed to get back to making his soups. "I apologize," he added quickly. "I know the letter must have come as quite a shock." Of course it would have. If only Darcy could understand that.

Mort grinned at the man who greeted him offering a nod to the woman. With his right hand Mortimer wiped the sweat from his forehead. For a moment he started to offer the man the sweaty hand but thankfully his brain caught up with is body and Mort uneasily wiped the sweat on the side of his pants. Nodding at the man's offer, Mortimer took a seat on the rock, catching his breath.
Mortimer finally caught his breath enough to speak when the man, Aaron, began to talk again. "Really?" he asked delighted, peering at the bundle. "And it's much more warning than I got with my son, Alair," he added reassuringly.
If he were honest with himself, Mort was rather pleasantly surprised to be 'invited' to take care of another child. He had been completely unprepared with Alair and the second time around was bound to be much smoother.

Darcy looked vaguely surprised. More warning? The poor man. The child took a seat on one of the rocks, making herself comfortable. "I'm glad you seem happy about this. Most people aren't as appreciative." she said, a look of amusement creeping across her face as she thought back on previous guardians.
Aaron offered a small smile up to the adult, holding the child out so he could get a better look. "He's a Zurg." the boy said, chuckling. "First time we ever had one occur. Cute little fella. Take good care of him, alright?"
