The Booyah that's too big for my universal "Booyah" thread.
For years I'd wondered what Tribe I was from. I thought it was surely Judah or Benjamin(or maybe even Levi but probably not), but I needed more than that. I wanted to know so badly!
Then, a few years ago, my Grandad, who is the only person on Earth more obsessed with my family's history than I am(Did I mention the massive Family Tree I've taken upon myself to slave over from scratch these past few years?), showed me his big binder of all his research, articles, interviews...
It was there that I got wind of the Family Legend that Grandad's Grandad was a decendant of the Baal Shem Tov(Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov), founder of the Chassidic Movement. I was thrilled. Even more so thrilled when Behatz told me that he was of tthe House of King David, whom I knew to be a Judahite.
And just like that, I was a Judahite. And being a Judahite, it just gave me such a great feeling! A sense of belonging, an even stronger connection to my Avot and Imaot.
I even argued jokingly with my Orthodox friend about my being a Judahite as better than his Levite thing. "You know what's better than priesthood? Owning Land!! XD"
But then I was dealt a crushing blow when I found out that the Tribe was just another one of those things that you get from your dad, a remnant from back when Judaism was still Patrilineal. My Jewish Mom, among other things, makes me Jewish, but it doesn't give me a connection to any tribe! Paradise lost! A tribe-less Jew!
This was horrible.
I had no clue how to answer "Are you M.O.T.?", and more seriously, I felt a little bit lost.
But then, today, that Orthodox Levite friend of mine got into a discussion about Tribes and me, and he asked a reputable, tenured Talmud Scholar. The Verdict: True, I am not technically a member of any Tribe, but I can basically still claim my connection to Judah because my Mom's Dad is supposedly a Judahite.
And that's good enough for me!
I'M A JUDAHITE AGAIN!!!! OH, GLORIOUS G-D, I'M A JUDAHITE AGAIN!!!

Holy crap...
I just learned something at school:
Lot and his daughter conceived Moab, making Moab the product of incest. Ruth was descended from Moab. Ruth was Kind David's grandmother.
Ergo, King David was a product of incest.
And since my claim to Judah is through the Baal Shem Tov through King David, I'm...
Ewwwww.

The Content Bandaid LordNeuf Incest was not only practiced but encouraged within royalty throughout history. yup, especially in Europe. Ever take a look at the Kings and Queens of Europe family tree? It's pretty confusing at times lol Well if your a noble you must marry a noble, with wars being a constant and the fact many people had children into the double digits, you had one family ruling most of the country who were marrying each other from the same noble house.

And on the topic of incest, did you know that the 12 brothers all married each others twin sisters? Gross The very existence of the twin sisters is Midrash, you know. It's not in the text. And Joseph marrying the daughter that his sister Dina had after Shechem raped her? Also Midrash. But I will give you that there is a lot of incest in the Bible besides Moab. For example: -Adam and Eve and their first few generations, obviously. -Noah and his sons and their wives and the next generation or two, repopulation... -Abraham's brother Nahor marrying Abraham's other brother's daughter. -Abraham and Sarah were, like, cousins or something, I forget... -Isaac and Rebekah were also cousins I think... - Jacob I know was cousins with Leah and Rachel, whom he had the tribes with... And that's just off the top of my head.

The thread was locked and I think deleted. Let's not have that happen.
