Okay so at our school we have concert band (easy) and symphonic band (hard). Well after marching season the band is now the symphonic band. I had so much fun with my section. It was great being challenged with hard music and being able to play it. Now next week, I have to move to concert band......because I'm a freshman. At our school, freshman aren't allowed to be in symphonic band unless it's first semester with marching/symphonic band. Doesn't matter how good you are (and counting myself there are some GOOD freshman). I'm so mad cause none of the upperclassman in my section will be in concert band (like playing secondary instruments and stuff) and I'm gonna be with a bunch of dumb @$$ saxophone players so basically I'll be the senior of the group. I'll definitely miss my section. They are the greatest. For all the freshies (woot woot), do you have anything like this in your school.

Sounds a lot like my school.
The younger players would automatically get put on a second part, no matter how much better they are than the rest of the section.
Also, the higher band used to be grades 10 11 and 12, me being in grade 10. But then they split it into 9 10 and 11 12.
So all of us grade 10s got moved down. My BD told me, "Oh! Not you, you're staying with the senior band. We needed one to stay and I knew you'd be able to handle it."
But then another grade 10 had an after school job scheduled for the junior band nights, (Because she was in senior band before) so I had to switch places with her.
And basically, right now I'm in your position. lol Don't worry. You'll get used to it. Sure it'll take a lot longer for the band to progress because the players aren't as good, but at least you'll probably get all the solos that come up.

Yeah we have the problem of younger players (basically freshman) getting second parts no matter how good they are and seniors and juniors getting first even if they were bad (stupid seniority).

That's kind-of ridiculous. There's some seniority stuff as far as getting on buses and eating dinner first and what not, but nothing like that at my school. It's arranged based on the audition, no matter what your grade.
We tend to give out second parts to freshmen during marching season, though. It's just kinda how it works, with some exceptions.

We have 3 Ensembles in the concert season:
1.Concert band (aka Freshman/Rookie band) 2. Symphonic Band (AKA Wind II) 3. Symphonic Winds (AKA Wind I)
Concert band is default for all third year students, [Third year being, the first year of highschool, But since I went to a private school before middle school I got to play in 6th grade HAAAAA, sorry getting off topic] They play grade 1-3 music.
Symphonic band, is default for all 4th year students (Second-4th Year in high school) And plays roughly grade 2-4 music,
Symphonic winds, the top ensemble, has SOME freshmen in it (They needed the middle school BD's reccomendation, and he has a thing about only reccomending brass players, so basically, youre stuck in freshman band even if youve had.....3 years prior to this year and youre a woodiwind 8D lucky me) Seniority is definately a factor, but the bigger thing at our school is favoritism Lets just say: If the BD doesnt like you, just quit band already.

Wow... It sucks that you guys have some pretty tough school rules. At my school there are no limits in the music programs because of age. I'm a freshman and I'm already in wind ensemble, jazz band, and I was in full orchestra when we still had it. These groups are some of the most advanced groups you could be in, and there are a ton of freshman in them (partially because over half of our band is full of them).

The only rule for freshman at my school is we can't be in jazz band, but guess who's the only freshman in jazz band? Me.

Our school used to be like that last year.. but our band program is waay to tiny to be selective. We let in a few really good freshmen and that was certainly a good thing. We've improved a ton. But..I don't think that larger bands should do such unless they need specific instrumentation. All the freshmen were immature and obnoxious except for maybe two.. Trust me, you'll think the same thing as an uppperclassman, lol, no matter how much you deny it as a freshman. (I certainly did.)

wow that really sucks! i'm sorry sad at my school, all the "advanced" fine arts-type classes (like art 2, advanced dance, wind ensemble, advanced drama) all say "grades 10 (or 11)-12" but then the admin doesn't really care about it and then it says "or by permission/audition by the instructor" so maybe you could get your BD to talk to the administration to add something like that?
